(1) Michigan State 91, Maryland 61 – No. 1 Michigan State beats Maryland 91-61 with balance
Miles Bridges had 15 points, seven assists, six rebounds and two blocks to help No. 1 Michigan State turn a closely contested game into another rout, pulling away to beat Maryland 91-61 on Thursday night. The Spartans (15-1, 3-0 Big Ten) went on a 15-0 run late in the first half to take control and led 44-32 at halftime. They refused to be content with the 12-point lead, building 30-plus point cushions in the second half by diving for loose balls, playing tough defense and finishing with a season-high 16 3-pointers. NBA teams were well represented at the game with at least a dozen in attendance and they saw a lot of prospects playing for Michigan State. Freshman Jaren Jackson, projected to be picked ahead of Bridges this year, had 15 points, three blocks and two steals despite playing just 4 minutes in the first half because he had two fouls. Nick Ward had 16 points and two blocks. Cassius Winston had 10 points and eight assists before fouling out for the Spartans.

State high court won’t hear Mateen Cleaves sex assault case
The Michigan Supreme Court has declined to review a judge’s decision to reinstate sexual assault charges against former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves. The state’s high court on Wednesday joined three Michigan Court of Appeals judges, who in August denied Cleaves’ request. Earlier, Genesee County Judge Archie Hayman reinstated the case against Cleaves, who faces charges including unlawful imprisonment and second-degree criminal sexual conduct.  The case is expected to return to county court for trial. Cleaves is accused of assaulting a woman after a charity golf event and a visit to a Flint-area bar in 2015. Defense attorney Frank Manley says he remains “confident” Cleaves will be “vindicated.” Cleaves, a Flint native, led Michigan State to the NCAA basketball championship in 2000 and played for four NBA teams.

NFL – Bears interview Vikings DC Edwards for coaching job
The Chicago Bears say they have interviewed Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards for their coaching job. The 50-year-old Edwards has coached 28 seasons _ 20 in the NFL _ and has been Minnesota’s defensive coordinator since 2014. The NFC North champion Vikings gave up a league-low 275.9 yards and 15.8 points per game. They were also second against the run and the pass. The interview with Edwards in Minnesota on Thursday was the Bears’ second since they fired John Fox this week. Chicago also met with defensive coordinator Vic Fangio at the team’s headquarters on Wednesday. International hockey head wants NHL back for 2022 Olympics
The head of the International Ice Hockey Federation says he will do everything in his power to persuade the NHL to take part in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. The NHL won’t allow its players to participate in the Winter Games next month in South Korea. Federation president Rene’ Fasel says he believes the best way to get the NHL involved in the 2022 Games is for the players’ union to apply pressure on the league in the next contract negotiations. The NHL’s current labor deal runs through the 2021-22 season, but includes a window to be renegotiated in 2020. Fasel spoke on Thursday while attending the world junior championships being held in Buffalo, New York. Fasel noted that he will be watching the semifinal games with players’ union chief Donald Fehr.

Elko was at Notre Dame for one season and the Fighting Irish defense took a big step forward, from 5.40 yards per play allowed (45th in the nation) to 5.05 (25th). He spent the previous three seasons at Wake Forest. Texas A&M tried to hire Dave Aranda away from LSU, but he chose to stay with the Tigers and signed a four-year deal worth $10 million. Aranda is the first FBS assistant to make more than $2 million per year.

Tennis – Williams to miss Australian Open
The upcoming Australian Open women’s draw won’t include the defending champion. Serena Williams has withdrawn from the tournament, saying she’s not ready to return to competitive tennis. Williams was pregnant with her first child when she won last year’s tournament at Melbourne Park, the 23rd Grand Slam singles title of her career. She gave birth in September and played in an exhibition tournament last week. Williams indicated after her loss to French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko that she might not make it to Melbourne.
