NFL – National Football League – Week 14
Yesterday
Miami Dolphins 27, New England Patriots 20

Dolphins 27, Patriots 20 – Brady intercepted twice as Dolphins beat Pats 27-20
Tom Brady was intercepted twice by Xavien Howard and held without a third-down conversion Monday night, and the Miami Dolphins snapped the New England Patriots’ eight-game winning streak with a surprising 27-20 victory. The Dolphins (6-7) were 11-point underdogs at home, but they kept the Patriots (10-3) from clinching their ninth consecutive AFC East title _ at least for another week.  Brady went 24 for 43 for 233 yards and one touchdown. Miami sacked him twice and hit him five times, and held the Patriots to 25 yards rushing. New England was 0 for 11 on third down. The Dolphins’ Jay Cutler threw for 263 yards and three scores, including two to Jarvis Landry. Kenyan Drake had 114 yards rushing and 79 receiving.

NFL – Eagles confirm Wentz out with ACL tear
The Philadelphia Eagles have lost their star quarterback for the season. An MRI on Monday that confirmed that Carson Wentz tore his left ACL in Sunday’s win over Los Angeles. Wentz has been a favorite in the NFL MVP race. Wentz was hurt late in the third quarter. Backup Nick Foles rallied the Eagles (11-2) to a win that secured the NFC East title and put them in first place in the conference with three games remaining.

NBA – National Basketball Association
Last Night
Chicago Bulls 108, Boston Celtics 85

Bulls 108, Celtics 85 – Mirotic, Portis lead way, Bulls blow out Celtics 108-85
Nikola Mirotic scored 24 points, Bobby Portis added a career-high 23 and the Chicago Bulls blew out Boston 108-85 on Monday night with Celtics star Kyrie Irving sidelined because of a bruised left quadriceps.  Owners of the NBA’s worst record, the Bulls built an 18-point lead in the second quarter against the Eastern Conference leaders. And when Boston cut it to 12 in the fourth, the Bulls simply pulled away for their third straight win.  Mirotic made his first start of the season with leading scorer Lauri Markkanen sidelined because of back spasms. The 6-foot-10 forward hit 9 of 14 shots and grabbed eight rebounds in his third appearance.  Portis shot 10 of 15 and nailed all three 3-pointers.

Panthers 2, Red Wings 1 – OT – Matheson’s first of season wins it for Panthers in OT
Mike Matheson scored his first goal of the season and the Florida Panthers won in overtime for the first time this season, taking a 2-1 decision from the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night. Matheson drove the rebound of a Nick Bjugstad shot into the net behind Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard at the 2:02 mark of the overtime period for the winner. Florida improved to 1-2 in OT, rallying from a 1-0 third-period deficit for the victory. Vincent Trocheck also scored for the Panthers, while Henrik Zetterberg scored for the Wings, who are 0-5 in overtime. Ending a 22-game goal drought, Zetterberg opened the scoring at the 18:27 mark of the first period. Panthers defenseman Matheson blocked Zetterberg’s original shot, but the Detroit captain picked up the rebound and snapped a low shot through the pads of Florida goalie James Reimer.

MLB – Who’s on deck for baseball’s next big deal? Red Sox, Cubs?
No matter how much their fans imagined Giancarlo Stanton bashing balls over the Green Monster, the Boston Red Sox never came close to getting the NL MVP. But does anyone really expect the Red Sox or the Cubs and other top contenders to stand still after seeing the slugger join the dreaded New York Yankees?  Dave Dombrowski, Boston’s president of baseball operations, says the team is “looking for a middle of the order bat. That hasn’t changed. First base or DH.”  A couple of big hitters just happen to be available, too. J.D. Martinez, who launched four home runs in a game for Arizona last season, is a free agent. So is Eric Hosmer, coming off a career year in Kansas City. Perhaps the Chicago Cubs think bopper Kyle Schwarber might fit better somewhere else. The Cubs already seems to have a target at the swap-and-sign gathering in Florida: pitcher Alex Cobb, who could possibly take Jake Arrieta’s spot in the rotation for the NL Central champs.

NCAA Basketball – Villanova hops over MSU for men’s top spot
Villanova is the new No. 1 in the AP Top 25 while Arizona State made a big leap after a tumultuous week in which half of the top 10 lost. The Villanova Wildcats (10-0) were fourth but earned 41 of 65 first-place votes to hop over Michigan State, which earned 19 first-place votes to climb from third to second. They were the favorites to take over at the top following unanimous No. 1 Duke’s weekend loss at Boston College. Wichita State climbed three spots to No. 3, followed by Duke and Arizona State. The Sun Devils (9-0) jumped 11 spots and earned the other five first-place votes after winning at then-No. 2 Kansas to extend their best start since the 1974-75 season.  The Jayhawks fell to No. 13 after two losses. Unbeaten Miami climbed four spots to No. 6, followed by North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Xavier to round out the top 10.

NCAA Basketball – Tennessee back in women’s top 10
Tennessee moves back into the top 10 after a big win while UConn continues to be No. 1 in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll.  The Lady Vols (10-0) knocked off then-No. 2 Texas on Sunday and climbed four spots to seventh in the Top 25 on Monday. Tennessee, which was a perennial top team in the sport, hasn’t been among the first 10 teams in the poll since Nov. 30, 2015. UConn received all 32 first place votes from a national media panel. The Huskies, like many other teams, are off for exams this week. Notre Dame, Louisville, Mississippi State and South Carolina follow UConn. Baylor, Tennessee, Texas, Oregon and West Virginia round out the first 10.  Iowa (10-1) entered the Top 25 for the first time since 2015, coming in at No. 25.

NCAA Football – Ole Miss QB Shea Patterson to Michigan
Mississippi quarterback Shea Patterson says he will transfer to Michigan. Patterson made his commitment in a tweet on Monday after visiting the Ann Arbor, Michigan, campus last weekend . Patterson is recovering from a right knee injury that cost him the final month of last season, but he should be ready to compete in 2018. In seven games, Patterson passed for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns, with nine interceptions. The sophomore was one of the top recruits in the 2016 class. Ole Miss was hit with NCAA sanctions two weeks ago that included a bowl ban next season. The NCAA said Mississippi’s seniors could transfer without sitting out next season, as is usually required. Patterson does not qualify for that but could petition the NCAA to be immediately eligible.

Golf – Tours to eliminate 2-shot scorecard error for reviews
Players no longer will be penalized two shots for an incorrect scorecard if they were not aware of a rules violation when they signed their card. The USGA and R&A also will no longer respond to most TV viewers’ calls during the tournament.  The changes are part of a local rule effective Jan. 1.  Rescinding the scorecard penalty, famously applied to Lexi Thompson at the LPGA Tour’s first major last April, Thompson had a three-shot lead in the final round of the ANA Inspiration when a TV viewer noticed she had improperly replaced her golf ball on the green during the third round. She was penalized two shots for the infraction. Because that would have made her score two shots higher, she received an additional two-shot penalty for the scorecard error.  The USGA and R&A also said only video from the telecast – not smart phones or other video from fans – can be used as evidence of a violation. It also said it would make it tougher for fans to call in if they think they see a violation on TV.  The change also means each tournament will assign one or more officials to monitor the video broadcast and help identify any violations or rules issues that might arise.
