Falcons 20, Saints 17 – Falcons edge Saints
Matt Bryant kicked a tiebreaking, 52-yard field goal with 3:49 remaining before Deion Jones intercepted Drew Brees in the end zone to preserve the Atlanta Falcons’ 20-17 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Brees threw two touchdown passes while the Saints were building a 17-10 lead, but the Falcons tied it on Matt Ryan’s scoring strike to Mohamed Sanu with 9:55 left. The outcome leaves the NFC South-leading Saints 9-4, one game ahead of the Falcons and just a half-game in front of Carolina.

NFL – Winless Browns fire VP Sashi Brown, keep their coach
The Cleveland Browns have fired top executive Sashi Brown, but are keeping coach Hue Jackson for another season despite a 1-27 record since he took over last year. Brown has been replaced by former Kansas City GM John Dorsey, whose Chiefs went 43-21 and reached the playoffs three times in four seasons from 2013-16. Brown’s firing is not unexpected since Cleveland is 0-12 for the second straight season with Brown in charge. The team passed up a chance to draft quarterbacks Carson Wentz and Deshaun Watson in the past two drafts and Cleveland has shown little sign of improvement since Brown took over.

NCAA Football – Tennessee hires Alabama assistant Jeremy Pruitt as coach
Tennessee’s lengthy search for a head football coach is finally over. The Vols have chosen Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt to take over for Butch Jones, who was dismissed last month. The hiring comes six days after former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer was named athletic director and put in charge of the coaching search.

MLB – Gordon goes from Fish to M’s
Giancarlo Stanton remains on the Miami Marlins’ payroll, although that hasn’t stopped the team from beginning its salary dump. The Marlins have shipped speedster Dee Gordon to the Mariners for three prospects as Miami tries to slash payroll by more than 20 percent to about $90 million. Gordon hit .308 for Miami last season and led the National League in stolen bases for the third time in four years. He won a batting title in 2015 and is a lifetime .293 hitter. Gordon has been a second baseman much of his major league career, but he’s expected to be moved to the outfield by the Mariners due to the presence of eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano. Miami acquired right-hander and Mariners No. 2 prospect Nick Neidert in the trade, along with infielder Chris Torres and right-hander Robert Dugger. Seattle gets international signing bonus pool allotment, boosting the amount it can offer Japanese star pitcher.

USA Soccer – Solo announces she’s running for president of US Soccer
Former U.S. national team goalkeeper Hope Solo says she’s running for president of U.S. Soccer.  Solo made the announcement Thursday night on Facebook. It comes less than a week after current U.S. Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati said he will not seek a fourth term. His decision came in the wake of the October failure of the U.S. men’s team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup. “I know exactly what U.S. Soccer needs to do, I know exactly how to do it, and I possess the fortitude to get it done,” she said in the post. The 36-year-old Solo anchored the U.S. team in goal during its 2015 Women’s World Cup championship run. Her tenure with the national team ended following last year’s Olympics in Brazil, when the US was ousted by Sweden in the quarterfinals. Afterward, Solo called the Swedish team “cowards” for their defensive style of play.
