Reducing Michigan’s high number of residential fire fatalities is the goal of a new statewide Community Risk Reduction plan announced this month by Michigan Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer. He tells WSJM News Michigan has ranked in the top tier of states nationally for its number of residential fire fatalities for the last several years. He hopes to change that with his new list of recommendations. A key part of it is education.

“We know that we need to be out in the schools, we need to be in the communities, and we need to get the message out about fire safety,” Sehlmeyer said.

Sehlmeyer tells us ensuring every home and business has an adequate number of working smoke detectors is also key. He tells us the State of Michigan Community Risk Reduction Taskforce now has its strategic plan online for anyone to see. You can find the fire marshal’s strategic plan right here.
