Michigan State Police have a safety advisory for everyone now that it’s fall. Lieutenant Mike Dawson tells WSJM News drivers need to watch out for deer. Dawson reminds drivers that swerving is the worst thing to do if a deer runs out into the road.
“The last thing you need to do is swerve to avoid a deer,” Dawson said. “You should brake and hope that it gets out of your way, but never swerve off the road because you may hit something that’s much harder than a deer. Quite frequently, people will swerve off the road and they’ll hit a parked car or a tree, or they’ll lose control and roll over. You’re much better off to strike the deer if you cannot avoid it.”
Dawson notes there was recently a crash near Galien involving a deer in which a woman broke both legs because she had them up on the dashboard and the airbags deployed. So, it’s important to be aware and be careful. One more thing to remember — if you see one deer, there are probably more nearby.
