Last Night

Vegas Golden Knights 4, Chicago Blackhawks 2

Sabres 1, Red Wings 0 – Pouliot, Lehner lead Sabres to 1-0 win over Red Wings
Benoit Pouliot scored for the second straight game and Robin Lehner made 32 saves in a shutout as the Sabres beat the struggling Red Wings 1-0. Victor Antipin and Taylor Fedun each had an assist for Buffalo, which handed the Red Wings their fifth defeat in a row. The win was the first at home for rookie coach Phil Housley and ended the Sabres’ three-game home losing streak. Buffalo won consecutive games for the first time this season and improved to 3-5-2.

Golden Knights 4, Blackhawks 2 – Dansk party: Goalie halts Blackhawks, leads Vegas to 4-2 win
Oscar Dansk stopped 29 shots for his second career win in two appearances, and the Golden Knights beat the Blackhawks 4-2 for their fourth straight victory.  Dansk made his first NHL start after replacing injured Malcolm Subban during a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues on Saturday. The 23-year-old gave up goals to John Hayden and Patrick Kane, but was otherwise stellar for the Golden Knights. Vegas is the 10th expansion team to put together a four-game winning streak. The Golden Knights are 7-1-0 in their inaugural season.

NFL – Lions release P Jeff Locke, who had been replacing Martin
The Detroit Lions have released punter Jeff Locke.  Locke averaged 45.3 yards a punt for the Lions on 27 attempts this season. Sam Martin, the team’s regular punter, has been on the reserve/non-football injury list but was at practice Monday. Martin has not played this season, but he averaged 46.9 yards on 282 punts for the Lions from 2013-16. Locke spent the previous four seasons with Minnesota.

NFL – Peters, Hicks out for the season
Eagles coach Doug Pederson says nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters and starting linebacker Jordan Hicks will miss the rest of the season after being injured in Monday’s 34-24 win over Washington. Peters tore his right ACL and MCL and Hicks ruptured his right Achilles tendon. Those are two big losses for the NFL-leading Eagles (6-1). Peters has anchored Philadelphia’s offensive line for a decade. He’s a team leader and teammates showed their respect by surrounding the cart before it took him off the field. Hicks is a top playmaker on defense. He has seven interceptions and five fumble recoveries in 31 games.

MHSAA – Benton Harbor boys basketball placed on probation by the MHSAA
A former Lakeshore student now attending Benton Harbor has landed the Tigers boys basketball team in some trouble with the Michigan High School Athletic Association.   According to the Herald Palladium, former Lancer Justin Brown transferred to Benton Harbor what is being called “Athletic Motivated Transfer.”  Lakeshore is contesting that Brown was recruited to transfer to Benton Harbor by a Benton Harbor coach.  Brown would be required to sit out an entire school year.  Benton Harbor contends that Brown should be able to play in January after 90 days.  Benton Harbor is appealing the two years of probation handed down by the MHSAA, contending that Justin was convinced to go to Benton Harbor by his older brother Jarren Brown.  Benton Harbor says that Jarren is not a coach, either paid or volunteer and has never been a coach or is applying to be coach at the school.    Since there is no official relationship between Jarren and the district, the school says they shouldn’t be punished for the actions of a community member.   Jarren has been banned from coaching at Benton Harbor or in any MHSAA postseason tournament for two years.  Lakeshore coach Sean Schroeder accuses Benton Harbor of at having four players that have transferred in this season that were not at Benton Harbor last year.
