NFL – National Football League – Week 7
Yesterday
Philadelphia Eagles 34, Washington Redskins 24

Eagles 34, Redskins 24 – Wentz leads Eagles charge
The Philadelphia Eagles picked up their fifth straight win, but they also lost their nine-time Pro Bowl left tackle in the process. Carson Wentz threw for 268 yards and four touchdowns as the Eagles overcame a poor start to beat the Redskins, 34-24 in Philadelphia. Wentz also had a career-high 63 yards rushing for the 6-1 Eagles, who logged just 57 yards on their first four drives before Mack Hollins hauled in a 64-yard scoring strike that tied the game 10-10. Philadelphia finished the game without Jason Peters after he was carted off the field with a knee injury. Peters got hurt during the Eagles’ 86-yard scoring drive that opened the second half. Kirk Cousins had 303 yards passing and three TDs for the 3-3 Redskins.

NFL – Lions activate Thornton after suspension
The Detroit Lions have activated defensive tackle Khyri Thornton and waived quarterback Brad Kaaya.  The team announced the moves Monday. Thornton was suspended for the first six games of the season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. The Lions (3-3) are coming off an open date and host Pittsburgh on Sunday night.  Thornton started six games last season. Detroit can use him back after defensive tackle Haloti Ngata was lost for the season with an elbow injury .

NFL – Colts lose rookie safety with season-ending knee injury
Colts safety Malik Hooker will miss the rest of the season after injuring his right knee in Sunday’s game. Coach Chuck Pagano told reporters Monday that an MRI revealed the rookie had torn the ACL and MCL during a 27-0 loss to Jacksonville. Hooker, the No. 15 overall pick in April, played well after becoming a starter in Week 2. His three interceptions were tied for third in the NFL and he was seventh on the Colts (2-5) with 22 tackles. The injury occurred late in the second quarter as Hooker took an awkward hit from a blocker as he was trying to run down Allen Hurns on a 50-yard completion. Hooker refused to go off on a golf cart.

The Astros will go without outfielder Jake Marisnick, who hasn’t played since breaking a thumb last month.

NBA – National Basketball Association
Last Night
Philadelphia 76ers 97, Detroit Pistons 86

76ers 97, Pistons 86 – Simmons’ triple-double lists 76ers over Pistons 97-86
Ben Simmons had a triple-double in his fourth NBA game, Joel Embiid scored 30 points and the Philadelphia 76ers beat the Detroit Pistons 97-86 on Monday night for their first win of the season. Simmons had 21 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, showing off the skill and versatility that made him the No. 1 pick in the 2016 draft before he missed all of last season with a foot injury. He finished two assists shy of a triple-double in his previous game at Toronto. Detroit, which rallied from a 21-point deficit to beat the New York Knicks on Saturday night, fell behind by 21 again in the second quarter against the 76ers. The Pistons chipped away and were within three in the fourth, but Philadelphia held on.

NHL – Ducks’ Patrick Eaves recovering from Guillain-Barre syndrome
Anaheim Ducks forward Patrick Eaves has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome, and his hockey career is on hold while he recovers. The Ducks announced Eaves’ diagnosis Monday, disclosing that the veteran was in intensive care last week. Eaves is still hospitalized in Newport Beach, California. Guillain-Barre syndrome is a rare disorder in which a patient’s immune system attacks the nervous system, sometimes resulting in death. Eaves’ condition stabilized after his stint in the ICU. In a statement, Eaves thanked his doctors for quickly diagnosing his disorder.
He is determined to return to the ice. Eaves joined the Ducks by trade in late February and played a key goal-scoring role in their fifth straight division title. He re-signed with the Ducks in the summer, agreeing to a three-year, $9.45 million deal.  Eaves has previously played with Ottawa, Carolina, Detroit, Nashville, and Dallas.

NCAA Basketball – Hurricanes coach speaks about probe
Miami coach Jim Larranaga believes he is the “Coach-3” named in court documents detailing the federal investigation of college basketball. However, he insists that he will be vindicated.  Larranaga spoke out Monday for the first time since the scandal broke. He read from a prepared statement and later refused to answer any questions related to the investigation or other people linked to the federal probe.  “Coach-3” is listed in court documents as someone who allegedly had
conversations with an Adidas executive about paying a recruit $150,000 in exchange for a commitment. Larranaga said he has spoken with FBI agents, has turned over what he described as thousands of text messages, emails and other materials.
