Flooding has been a problem this week for the Van Buren County Road Commission. Engineer Manager Larry Hummel tells WSJM News water has pooled over roads in mostly low-lying areas. He reminds drivers to never try to drive through those road-covering puddles.

“Keep an eye open, especially when it gets dark,” Hummel said. “We certainly don’t want anybody to try to travel through a flooded area, not knowing if it’s too deep for a vehicle. Or, we might have a failure under that water that you can’t see.”

Hummel says road failure becomes a concern when there’s flooding. The flood warning for Van Buren County has been extended through 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. The road commission spent much of this week placing signs on rights of way that should not have been crossed. The National Weather Service says water levels throughout the county are continuing to rise, including on the Black River (pictured).
