MLB – Major League Baseball – 2017 Division Series (Best of 5)
Yesterday
Chicago Cubs 9, Washington Nationals 8                                               (CHC wins 3-2)

Cubs 9, Nationals 8 – Cubs come back on Scherzer, Nationals win 9-8 in NLDS Game 5
Addison Russell drove in four runs, Wade Davis earned a seven-out save, and the Chicago Cubs reached their third NL Championship Series in a row by edging the Washington Nationals 9-8 in a thriller of a Game 5. The defending World Series champion Cubs trailed 4-1 before scoring four runs in the fifth inning off two-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer. They then led 9-6 and held on, with the help of Davis’ longest appearance since 2012 and a key pickoff by catcher Willson Contreras in a game that lasted more than 4 ½ hours and ended after midnight Friday. Davis struck out a swinging Bryce Harper to finish it off. Chicago, which surpassed its total of eight runs in the first four games of the Division Series, advanced to face the Los Angeles Dodgers, who will start ace Clayton Kershaw at home in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday night. For manager Joe Maddon and the Cubs, this was their fourth consecutive victory in a win-or-be-eliminated postseason game. That includes three straight to end the 2016 World Series, when Chicago trailed the Cleveland Indians 3-1 before forcing a Game 7 won by the Cubs in 10 innings.  The Nationals have now lost a new MLB record 10 consecutive close out games.

Luke Glendening broke a tie with a short-handed goal with 3:24 left and the Detroit Red Wings beat the winless Arizona Coyotes 4-2 on Thursday night. Dylan Larkin got the assist on Glendening’s goal, his second of the night, after Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard made a flexible save at the other end. Howard finished with 33 saves. Frans Nielsen sent in a long empty-net goal with 1:34 to go to seal Detroit’s third victory of the season. The Coyotes have one point through four games. NFL – Lions still worried about Stafford’s ankle
Matthew Stafford’s ankle has been a concern this week, but he’s been practicing, and there’s been no indication that he’ll miss Sunday’s game at New Orleans. Stafford has made 101 consecutive starts for the Lions in the regular season _ plus three in the playoffs _ and Detroit certainly hopes he’s close to full strength this weekend against a team he’s had success against in the past.

NFL – Court clears way for 6-game suspension of Cowboys’ Elliott
The NFL has gained a big court victory as it seeks to finally implement its six-game suspension to Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott. A federal appeals court in New Orleans has granted the league’s emergency request to set aside a previous injunction and ordered a district court in Texas to dismiss Elliott’s case. The NFL announced that the suspension was effective immediately, although Elliott’s legal team has time to continue its fight since the Cowboys don’t play again until Oct. 22.
