NFL – National Football League – Week 5
Yesterday
Minnesota Vikings 20, Chicago Bears 17

Vikings 20, Bears 17 – Keenum leads 3 scoring drives, Vikings beat Bears 20-17
Case Keenum led three second-half scoring drives in relief of Sam Bradford, and the Minnesota Vikings spoiled prized rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s debut with a 20-17 victory over the Chicago Bears on Monday night. Kai Forbath kicked a 26-yard field goal in the closing seconds after Harrison Smith intercepted Trubisky, and the Vikings (3-2) came away with the win after dropping two of three.  Called on after Mike Glennon struggled in the first four games, Trubisky played like he belonged. The No. 2 overall pick was 12 of 25 for 128 yards with a touchdown. The interception came after the Bears (1-4) took over on their 10 with 2:32 left in the game. Jordan Howard ran for 76 yards. Pat O’Donnell threw a 38-yard touchdown to Benny Cunningham on a fake punt.

NFL – Lions release defensive end Armonty Bryant
The Detroit Lions have released defensive end Armonty Bryant. The Lions announced the move Monday. Bryant was suspended the first four games of this season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. He was eligible to return after that, but he did not play in Sunday’s loss to Carolina . Bryant was previously suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He was cut by Cleveland last year at the end of that suspension, and Detroit signed him. He played five games for the Lions and had three sacks. Bryant re-signed with Detroit in March, but hasn’t appeared in a game since.

NFL – Beckham to have ankle surgery
New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. will have surgery for his broken left ankle later this week. The winless Giants gave the update less than 24 hours after the three-time Pro Bowl receiver and the catalyst of their offense was hurt in the fourth quarter of a 27-22 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Beckham was the last of four Giants’ receivers knocked out of the game.

Anthony Rizzo looped a tiebreaking single with two outs in the eighth inning and the Chicago Cubs overcame Max Scherzer’s brilliant performance to beat the Washington Nationals 2-1 for a 2-1 lead in their NL Division Series. They can clinch it with a win Tuesday.

Astros 5, Red Sox 4 – Astros eliminate Boston
The Houston Astros advanced to an American League championship series for the first time, edging the Boston Red Sox 5-4 at Fenway Park. Justin Verlander, acquired from the Detroit Tigers late in the season, made a rare relief appearance to help Houston overtake Boston in the divisional series.

Yankees 7, Indians 3 – Yankees survive
The New York Yankees have roared back from a 2-0 deficit to tie their divisional series with Cleveland at two games apiece. Slumping rookie Aaron Judge came up with a key hit to score two runs for New York in its 7-3 victory over the visiting Indians at Yankee Stadium.

Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 1 – Dodgers advance to NLCS
The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 behind home runs by Cody Bellinger and Austin Barnes Monday night, sweeping their National League West rivals 3-0 in the best-of-five series and advancing to the league championship series.

MLB – Angels acquire hard-throwing reliever Felix Pena from Cubs
The Los Angeles Angels have acquired right-handed reliever Felix Pena from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash or a player to be named later.  The Angels announced the deal Monday for Diaz, who was designated for assignment by Chicago last week. Los Angeles also designated left-hander Jason Gurka for assignment. Diaz had a 4.98 ERA in 36 appearances with the Cubs over the past two seasons. The Dominican prospect showed talent and a 98-mph fastball, but gave up eight homers this season. Angels general manager Billy Eppler has demonstrated a knack for discovering capable pitchers on other teams’ scrap heaps. He added relievers Blake Parker, Yusmeiro Petit, David Hernandez and Bud Norris and starter Parker Bridwell at minimal expense in the last year alone.

MLB – Man sues Cubs, says foul ball blinded him in one eye
A man is suing the Chicago Cubs and Major League Baseball after he was struck in the face by a foul ball at Wrigley Field and left blind in one eye. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that 60-year-old John “Jay” Loos of Schaumburg says in the lawsuit filed by the Clifford Law Offices that he was sitting near the field during an August 29 game at Wrigley when he was struck. The lawsuit follows a number of incidents in which fans have been hit by foul balls, prompting calls for teams to install more safety netting at stadiums. Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney said recently on a radio program that the Cubs would extend safety netting at Wrigley.

NHL – National Hockey League
Last Night
Toronto Maple Leafs 4, Chicago Blackhawks 3 – OT

Maple Leafs 4, Blackhawks 3 – OT – Matthews scores in OT, Maple Leafs rally to beat Blackhawks
Auston Matthews scored in overtime and the Toronto Maple Leafs came from behind to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 on Monday night. Nikita Zaitsev, Connor Brown and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won their first three games. Jan Rutta, Jonathan Toews and Richard Panik had goals for the Blackhawks. Frederik Andersen made 18 saves for the win while Anton Forsberg stopped 39 shots.  Outside of the opening three minutes, the first period belonged to the Blackhawks, and they went into the intermission up 2-0. Rutta scored 3:46 into the game when he wheeled around the back of the net and tossed the puck out front, where it hit Toronto center Mitch Marner’s stick and squeaked through Andersen and the post. Toews made it 2-0 when he banged in a rebound over the left pad of Andersen with 12:53 to play in the first.  Toronto was behind 2-1 after 40 minutes despite outshooting Chicago 26-15. Shots were 40-21 for Toronto after regulation.

Tonight
Chicago Blackhawks at Montreal Canadiens, 7:30 p.m.
Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars, 8:30 p.m.

NHL – Penguins to be feted at the White House
Sidney Crosby and the rest of the Pittsburgh Penguins view their trip to the White House on Tuesday as the final moment of celebration for a championship season, not some sort of statement about where they stand on President Donald Trump. Crosby said that from his point of view, “there’s absolutely no politics involved.” At least, it hasn’t been. Yet the Penguins have found themselves unwittingly thrust into the increasingly uncomfortable intersection of politics and sports. President Donald Trump has taken aim at NFL players who protest during the national anthem, saying they should be fired. Trump also rescinded a White House invitation to Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry after the two-time MVP expressed reservations about going.
