NFL – National Football League – Week 5
Yesterday
Carolina Panthers 27, Detroit Lions 24
Indianapolis Colts 27, San Francisco 49ers 23 – OT

Panthers 27, Lions 24 – Cam Newton’s 3 TD passes help Panthers beat Lions
Cam Newton showed he was very focused on football, throwing three touchdowns to help the Carolina Panthers build a lead big enough to hold off the Detroit Lions for a 27-24 win Sunday. The Panthers, who are 4-1 scored 24 straight points after trailing the Lions 10-3 early in the second quarter. Detroit rallied, but could not stop Newton on his last drive to get the ball back. Newton came under fire for making sexist comments to a female reporter this week. He apologized after losing an endorsement deal and getting criticized by the NFL. He was 26 of 33 for a season-high 335 yards. On perhaps the game’s key play, he converted a third-and-19 from the Carolina 24 with a sharp, 17-yard pass to Kelvin Benjamin with 2:00 left while clinging to a three-point lead against a team out of timeouts.

Colts 26, 49ers 23 – OT – Colts celebrate Manning’s return with 26-23 win over 49ers
The Indianapolis Colts scrapped the Peyton Manning playbook Sunday. Instead, they relied on ball control and patience. After blowing a 14-point lead in the final eight minutes of regulation and surviving an interception in scoring position in overtime, Marlon Mack’s 35-yard run set up Adam Vinatieri for a 51-yard field goal that beat San Francisco 26-23. Vinatieri made four field goals to move into second on the NFL’s career list, one ahead of Gary Anderson. Mack and Jacoby Brissett each scored on TD runs for the Colts, who have won both games against winless teams. San Francisco is 1 of 3 teams that still has not won this season. The Browns and Giants are the others.

NFL – VP Pence leaves NFL game after players protest during anthem
Vice President Mike Pence has left the 49ers-Colts game after about a dozen San Francisco players took a knee during the national anthem. The former Indiana governor flew in so he could watch Peyton Manning’s jersey retirement ceremony on Sunday. But Pence didn’t stick around long.  Pence said on Twitter: “I left today’s Colts game because (at)POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.” The White House also issued a statement from Pence, in which he says Americans should rally around the flag. Pence said: “I don’t think it’s too much to ask NFL players to respect the Flag and our National Anthem.” Pence is a noted sports fan and it’s second major event he’s attended in his home state since taking office in January. He also attended May’s Indianapolis 500, a family tradition. Manning became the first Indianapolis-era player in Colts history to have his number retired and will also be inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor.  Pence flew in on Saturday after a statue of Manning was unveiled, an event attended by a number of luminaries including NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Instead, Pence spent most of Saturday honoring victims of the Las Vegas shooting before returning to his home state.

NFL – Vikings list Bradford as questionable to play vs. Bears
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Bradford has been listed as questionable to play in Monday night’s game at Chicago. Bradford hasn’t played since the season opener because of trouble with his left knee. He took part in practice on a limited basis Saturday. Bradford was ruled out ahead of time the last two weeks and has been held out of three straight games, so being declared a 50-50 proposition to play against the Bears is clearly progress. Bradford said on Friday his knee was feeling “night and day” better than two weeks ago.

MLB – Owner of Cubs World Series ring puts it up for sale
At least one individual associated with the Chicago Cubs doesn’t appear to be the sentimental type. The person is selling an official 2016 World Series ring commemorating the Cubs’ historic championship last season, ending their 108-year drought.  The Chicago Sun-Times reports Sunday that the ring, with its 214 diamonds, is listed by Leland’s Auctions. It says the seller is a scout but doesn’t include a name.  Bidding starts at around $2,000. It’ll go higher. Appraisers estimate its value at more than $50,000. There’s at least a theoretical chance the seller will get much less. When the Cubs gave rings to select non-players, they sought to dissuade secondary-market sales and reserved rights to buy them back under certain circumstances.  The amount they said they could pay was a single dollar.

NCAA Football – Penn State to 3; Wazzu, Auburn in top 10
Penn State moved up to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Washington State and Auburn jumped into the top 10 for the first time this season after six ranked teams lost this past weekend.  Alabama and Clemson still hold the top spots. The top-ranked Crimson Tide received 43 first-place votes in the poll released Sunday and the second-ranked Tigers had 18. The Nittany Lions have their best ranking since 2008, moving up one spot and taking advantage of the biggest upset of the season so far. Oklahoma lost at home to Iowa State on Saturday, dropping the Sooners from No. 3 to 12. Michigan lost for the first time and fell to 17.  Washington State is No. 8 and Auburn moved up to 10.

Toyota is 4-for-4 in NASCAR’s playoffs after Martin Truex Jr. took Sunday’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Truex dominated the final stage and finished .911 seconds ahead of Chase
Elliott. Truex continues to demonstrate he’s the driver to beat in this championship push after advancing to the third round of the playoffs. Kyle Busch wrecked early in the race after winning the last two playoff races. Busch finished the race in his damaged vehicle, but he needed medical attention after complaining of an overheated car throughout the race. Kevin Harvick was third, followed by Denny Hamlin and Jamie McMurray.

Running – Rupp 1st American to win Chicago Marathon since 2002
Galen Rupp won the Chicago Marathon on Sunday to become the first American winner in 15 years. Rupp finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 20 seconds.  Khalid Khannouchi was the last U.S. winner in 2002. Kenya’s Abel Kirui was second, 28 seconds behind Rupp. Kenya’s Bernard Kipyego was third.  Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba won the women’s race in 2:18:31. Kenya’s Brigid Kosgei was second, and American Jordan Hasay third. More than 40,000 runners started the 40th annual race more than a million spectators lined the route.

Boxing – Suspicious fire destroys old Kronk Gym building in Detroit
The fabled Kronk Gym building in Detroit has been destroyed by fire. Deputy Fire Chief Dave Fornell told The Detroit News Sunday that the blaze at the vacant building on the city’s southwest side was reported Saturday night. Firefighters arrived to find flames shooting from the gym’s second floor. The roof later collapsed. Fornell says the fire is being listed as suspicious and is under investigation. The Kronk boxing program was created by legendary boxing trainer Emanuel Stewart in 1971 and cultivated boxing champs Thomas Hearns and Hilmer Kenty. The building closed in 2006.
