MLB – Major League Baseball – Regular Season Finale
Yesterday
Minnesota Twins 5, Detroit Tigers 1
Cleveland Indians 3, Chicago White Sox 1
Cincinnati Reds 3, Chicago Cubs 1

Twins 5, Tigers 1 – Colon shines in reg season finale, Twins beat Tigers 5-1
Bartolo Colon made a final bid to be included in Minnesota’s postseason rotation, pitching one-run ball into the seventh inning to lead the Twins to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers in the regular-season finale Sunday.  Jason Castro homered and drove in three runs for the Twins, who play an AL wild-card game in New York against the Yankees on Tuesday night. A win would put the Twins in an ALDS against Cleveland, where Minnesota may need an experienced arm like Colon (5-6). Anibal Sanchez (3-7) gave up three runs and seven hits and struck out six in five innings for the Tigers, who missed the postseason for the third straight year and will go into the offseason looking for a manager to replace Brad Ausmus. Alex Presley hit a solo homer in the third inning.

Indians 3, White Sox 1 – Indians get AL-best 102nd victory, beat White Sox 3-1
Jay Bruce had a two-run single, Josh Tomlin pitched into the sixth inning and the Cleveland Indians got their AL-best 102nd victory, beating the Chicago White Sox 3-1 on Sunday in their regular-season finale.  Cleveland will next play an AL Division Series against the winner of the wild-card game between the Yankees and Twins. The 102 victories were the second most in franchise history behind the 1954 team’s 111. Jose Ramirez went 2 for 2, including his AL-high 56th double, and Carlos Santana had a sacrifice fly for the Indians, who are seeking a second straight World Series appearance. Bruce’s two RBIs in the first inning gave him 100 for the second time in his career. Tomlin (10-9) allowed a run and four hits. Cody Allen got his 30th save. Chris Volstad (1-2) allowed three runs in six innings.

Reds 3, Cubs 1 – Playoff-bound Cubs lose 3-1 to Reds in finale
Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant each had a light day of work as the Chicago Cubs prepared for the playoffs by playing much of their roster during a 3-1 loss to Deck McGuire and the Cincinnati Reds in the regular-season finale on Sunday. Most of Chicago’s starting lineup was gone by the fifth inning. Rizzo flied out leading off the first, and then was replaced in the field by Taylor Davis. Bryant and shortstop Addison Russell were pulled after the NL Central champion Cubs batted in the fourth. Chicago (92-70) is trying to become the first team to repeat as World Series champions since the New York Yankees won three in a row from 1998-2000. It will face Washington in the NL Division Series beginning on Friday.

MLB – Clark, Vizquel have interviewed for Detroit job
Dave Clark, Omar Vizquel and Lloyd McClendon are all in the mix as the Detroit Tigers search for a new manager. The Tigers confirmed that Clark and Vizquel have interviewed for the job, and that McClendon is set to interview at some point. All three are internal candidates to replace Brad Ausmus, who has been Detroit’s manager for the past four seasons but will not return in 2018. Clark is Detroit’s third base coach and was briefly an interim manager for the Houston Astros in 2009. Vizquel managed Venezuela at this year’s World Baseball Classic. He is the first base coach for the Tigers. McClendon, who is now Detroit’s hitting coach, managed the Seattle Mariners for two seasons and the Pittsburgh Pirates for five.

MLB – Stanton ends up 1 short of 60
Giancarlo Stanton came up short in his bid to become the sixth player to hit at least 60 homers in a season, ending up with major league-highs of 59 home runs and 132 RBIs following the Marlins’ 8-5 loss to Atlanta. Stanton was inserted into the leadoff spot to give him a better opportunity to get his milestone homer, but he went 2-for-5 and struck out in the ninth inning before receiving a standing ovation and taking a curtain call. Marcell Ozuna smacked his 37th home run for the Marlins, but the Braves got a three-run blast from pinch-hitter Adonis Garcia to spoil Miami’s final game under owner Jeffrey Loria.

Lions 14, Vikings 7 – Dominant defense leads Lions to 14-7 victory over Vikings
Anthony Zettel led a ferocious performance by Detroit’s defense with two sacks, four hurries and a fumble recovery, as the Lions forced three turnovers while holding Minnesota scoreless in the second half on the way to a 14-7 victory over the Vikings on Sunday afternoon. The Lions turned two fumbles lost by the Vikings in the third quarter into 11 points, taking the lead on Ameer Abdullah’s 1-yard touchdown run five plays after rookie Dalvin Cook fumbled at the Minnesota 29. The Vikings lost more than just possession, when Cook limped off with an injury to his left knee and did not return. Tahir Whitehead recovered that fumble for the Lions, plus one by Adam Thielen with 1:43 left at the Detroit 45 that ended the last-chance drive for the Vikings. Detroit leads the NFL in turnover margin, at plus-9.

Seahawks 46, Colts 18 – Seahawks use huge 2nd-half surge to rout Colts 46-18
The Seahawks scored two touchdowns in a 13-second span late in the third quarter to take control of an eventual 46-18 rout of the 1-3 Colts. The game was tied at 18 until J.D. McKissic scored from 30 yards out on his second NFL career, seconds before Bobby Wagner scooped up Marcus Smith’s forced fumble and rumbled 21 yards for a score. Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes and two interceptions for the 2-2 Seahawks, but his most important play was a 23-yard run in the third quarter to give Seattle an 18-15 lead.

NCAA Football – AP Top 25
Alabama’s big win over Mississippi didn’t keep Clemson from cutting into its lead in The Associated Press college football poll.  The defending national champion Tigers more than doubled their number of first-place votes after their 31-17 win over then-No. 12 Virginia Tech. Clemson
lost ground a week ago after struggling for three quarters against Boston College, but its sharp performance against the Hokies took the Tigers from eight to 17 first-place votes Sunday. The Tide went from 52 first-place votes last week to 44 despite their 66-3 rout of the Rebels.
The top four teams remained the same. Following Alabama and Clemson are Oklahoma, which lost the first-place vote it got last week, and Penn State. Southern California’s loss at Washington State made room for Georgia to take over at 5 after a win over Tennessee.  Washington, Michigan, TCU, Wisconsin and Ohio State rounded out the top 10.

NASCAR – Busch spoils Elliott’s run at Dover
Kyle Busch spoiled Chase Elliott’s run at his first career NASCAR Cup Series victory, taking the lead with two laps left to win Sunday at
Dover International Speedway.  Elliott led 138 laps and seemed poised to break through and reach victory lane for the first time in 70 career starts. Busch seemed to have the fresher tires on the No. 18 Toyota and reeled in Elliott down the stretch. Busch gave a ho-hum race a thrilling ending and won for the second straight week. Busch won for the fourth time and is hot at the right time as NASCAR’s playoffs head into the second round.  Ryan Newman, Austin Dillon, Kurt Busch and Kasey Kahne were eliminated as the playoff field was cut from 16 to 12.  Elliott was second, followed by 11-time Dover winner Jimmie Johnson, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Larson.

Golf – Americans win Presidents Cup for 7th straight time
The Americans have won the Presidents Cup for the seventh straight time, and this one wasn’t even close. Daniel Berger was 3 up with three holes to play against Si Woo Kim. That assured the Americans at least the half-point they needed for a victory. Kevin Chappell halved his match with Marc Leishman in the first of 12 singles. President Donald Trump arrived at Liberty National about 45 minutes before the U.S. team secured the gold trophy. Trump is first sitting U.S. president to present the trophy at the closing ceremony.  The Americans had an 11-point lead going into the final day and needed only one point. All that was left was to see if the U.S. team could be the first to win every session.

WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Finals (Best of 5)
Last Night
Minnesota Lynx 80, Los Angeles Sparks 69

Lynx 80, Sparks 69 – Lynx force decisive Game 5 with 80-69 win over Sparks
Sylvia Fowles scored 22 points and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Los Angeles Sparks 80-69 on Sunday night to force a decisive Game 5 in the WNBA Finals. Maya Moore and the Lynx will try for their fourth championship in seven years on Wednesday night at home. The Sparks won Game 5 at Minnesota last season to take the crown. Candace Parker and the Sparks are hoping to become the league’s first repeat champion since Los Angeles in 2002. For the second consecutive year, the Lynx found themselves down 2-1 on the Sparks’ court. And just like last season, Minnesota pushed the series to a winner-take-all game. Facing an end to their season, the Lynx were aggressive from the start, grabbing a lot of loose balls and dominating the glass. They trailed 10-8 before scoring 11 straight points in the first quarter. Minnesota led the rest of the way.

NHL – Hockey broadcaster Dave Strader dies of cancer at 62
Hockey broadcaster Dave Strader has died after battling bile duct cancer for more than a year. He was 62. The Dallas Stars say Strader died Sunday at his home in Glens Falls, New York. Strader was a play-by-play man with the Stars and a national broadcaster on NBC Sports. Known as “The Voice,” Strader received the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award from the Hockey Hall of Fame earlier this year. He previously was the broadcaster for the Detroit Red Wings, Arizona Coyotes and Florida Panthers and worked three Olympic Games. Stars president and CEO Jim Lites says Strader’s “voice is synonymous with hockey to fans all over the globe and he built a connection for so many fans to this game.”
