NFL – National Football League – Week 4
Last Night
Green Bay Packers 35, Chicago Bears 14

Packers 35, Bears 14 – Injury-riddled Packers beat mistake-prone Bears 35-14
Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, and the injury-riddled Green Bay Packers converted three turnovers into scores in an eventful 35-14 victory over the mistake-prone Chicago Bears on Thursday night. Rodgers connected with Davante Adams and Randall Cobb on short touchdown passes to help build a 21-0 lead in the second quarter of a game delayed 45 minutes between the first two quarters because of lightning. The Packers overpowered the Bears down the stretch to slog out a win as intermittent rain fell at Lambeau Field.  The Packers lost two more key players to injuries. Adams left the field on a stretcher after getting hit in the head during a tackle by Danny Trevathan in the third quarter. Running back Ty Montgomery was knocked out in the first quarter with a chest injury.  But the Packers capitalized on an awful start by Bears quarterback Mike Glennon, who accounted for four turnovers.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 – F/11 – Cards miss playoffs for 2nd straight year, lose to Cubs 2-1
The Cardinals were eliminated from postseason contention when Leonys Martin leaped at the center-field fence to rob Paul DeJong of a tying home run with two outs in the 11th inning, preserving the Chicago Cubs’ 2-1 win over St. Louis on Thursday night. St. Louis, which went 5-14 against its rival, missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 2007 and 2008. At 82-77, the Cardinals are assured their fewest wins since going 78-84 in 2007. A day after clinched their second straight NL Central title, the defending World Series champions started only two position players who had played in at least 100 games: outfielders Ian Happ and Kyle Schwarber. Schwarber singled off Matt Bowman (3-6) with one out in the 11th and Davis, who struck out in his first three at-bats, hit a run-scoring double down the left-field line.

Tigers 4, Royals 1 – Tigers snap 9-game losing streak, top Royals 4-1
Daniel Norris threw five scoreless innings to pick up his first victory in more than three months as the Detroit Tigers snapped a season-high nine-game losing streak by beating the Kansas City Royals 4-1 on Thursday night. Norris (5-8) gave up two hits in five innings. He was 0-4 in four starts and four relief appearances since a June 16 triumph over Tampa Bay. Nicholas Castellanos’ fifth-inning double with the bases loaded scored Alex Presley, JaCoby Jones and Dixon Machado. Jones singled home Andrew Romine with the first run of the inning.

White Sox 5, Angels 4 – Brantly, White Sox rally in 8th to top Angels, 5-4
Rob Brantly hit the game-tying home run in the eighth inning and Tim Anderson hustled home for the go-ahead run as the Chicago White Sox rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday night. Anderson scored from first base on a single by Rymer Liriano, as the throw from left fielder Ben Revere went to second base and Anderson alertly headed home, scoring easily on reliever Jesse Chavez (7-11). Gregory Infante (2-1) earned the win in relief, throwing a scoreless eighth inning.

MLB – White Sox lefty Rodon out 6-8 months after shoulder surgery
Chicago White Sox starter Carlos Rodon had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder and could miss the beginning of next season, general manager Rick Hahn said. Hahn said Thursday the left-hander should miss six to eight months after the surgery, which revealed significant bursitis, which was removed in Wednesday’s surgery. Rodon, 24, missed nearly the first three months of the season with shoulder and biceps problems and went 2-5 with a 4.15 ERA in 12 starts before returning to the disabled list on Sept. 8. “We’ll know more about the specifics of the timing when Carlos completes his rehab and begins throwing in spring training,” Hahn said.  In three seasons, Rodon is 20-21 with a 3.95 ERA.

NBA – NBA approves draft lottery, player resting rules
The NBA has eliminated the desire for teams to tank games in an effort to improve their chances for a No. 1 draft pick. The league has also made it tougher for coaches to rest their top players. Each of the league’s three worst teams will have a 14 percent chance of landing the No. 1 pick, beginning with the 2019 draft. The team with the worst record previously had a 25 percent shot of winning the lottery and could fall to the No. 4 spot in the draft. Now, that team call tumble all the way to fifth. The Board of Governors also voted to allow Commissioner Adam Silver to fine teams that violate the league’s new guidelines about resting healthy players for nationally televised games.
