Last Night
Cleveland Indians 5, Detroit Tigers 3
Chicago White Sox 5, Kansas City Royals 3
Chicago Cubs 17, New York Mets 5

Indians 5, Tigers 3 – Blackjack!!: Indians set AL record with 21st straight win
The Cleveland Indians won their 21st straight game on Wednesday, 5-3 over the Detroit Tigers, to set a AL winning-streak record and join only two other teams in the past 101 years to win that many consecutive games. Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer off Buck Farmer (4-3) and Mike Clevinger (10-5) won his fourth straight start as the Indians matched the 1935 Chicago Cubs for the second-longest streak since 1900. The run has put Cleveland within five wins of catching the 1916 New York Giants, who won 26 straight without a loss but whose century-old mark includes a tie. The Indians haven’t lost in 20 days, and they’ve rarely been challenged during a late-season run. However, they had to overcome a costly error and rely on their bullpen to hold off the Tigers, who closed within 4-3. Roberto Perez added a homer in the seventh and four Cleveland relievers finished, with Cody Allen getting his 27th save. With the crowd of 29,346 standing and stomping, Allen retired Ian Kinsler for the final out, giving the Indians the league’s longest streak since the AL was founded in 1901.

White Sox 5, Royals 3 – White Sox score 2 in 9th, beat Royals 5-3
Jose Abreu and Avisail Garcia drove in runs in the ninth inning as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Wednesday. Abreu’s sacrifice fly scored Tim Anderson, who led off the inning with a single, took second on a wild pitch by Scott Alexander (4-4) and stole third. Garcia’s single to center scored Yoan Moncada with the second run. Garcia is hitting an American League-leading .432 against left-handed pitchers.  The Royals tied the score at 3 in the eighth. Alcides Escobar singled in one run, while pinch runner Terrance Gore scored the other on an Alex Gordon groundout.  Juan Minaya (3-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the victory. The White Sox won two of three in the series. Royals starter Eric Skoglund lasted only three innings and 66 pitches, giving up three runs on five hits.  White Sox starter Lucas Giolito yielded one run, a homer by Salvador Perez in the sixth inning, in 6 1/3 innings.

Cubs 17, Mets 5 – Baez, Almora homer as Cubs rout Mets 17-5
Javier Baez homered and had four hits, Albert Almora Jr. also went deep and drove in six runs, and the Chicago Cubs routed the New York Mets 17-5 on Wednesday night. The Cubs matched a season high for runs after pouring on 12 over their final three at-bats. They have outscored the Mets 25-8 the past two games. It’s just what the NL Central leaders needed after managing only three runs in a weekend sweep by Milwaukee that tightened the division race. Chicago remained 2 1/2 games ahead of the Brewers and moved three up on St. Louis.  Kris Bryant had three hits and scored four runs. Ben Zobrist also scored four times.

MLB – A’s choose site near Oakland’s Lake Merritt for new ballpark
The Athletics have picked land near Oakland’s Lake Merritt as the site for an intimate new ballpark.  Team President Dave Kaval says in a letter to the Peralta Community College District that he believes the location presents an opportunity to keep the city’s “last professional sports team in Oakland for the long term.” The land sits between Lake Merritt and Interstate 880 and includes commercial warehouses, parking lots, and administrative offices for the district. The team and the college district, which owns the 13-acre site, will now begin negotiations. The small-budget A’s considers a new ballpark the top priority to be a regular contender.  The run-down Coliseum, shared with the Raiders and the last venue with both Major League Baseball and football, had multiple sewage problems in 2013 that caused damage during games.

NFL – Lions release statement after report of racial slur by fan
The Lions say they expect fans to be respectful and considerate to each other “regardless of their personal beliefs or differences” after a man and a woman were reportedly called a racial slur in a Snapchat picture of them sitting during the national anthem at last weekend’s game in Detroit. TV station WJBK reported on the photo, saying the person allegedly behind it has denied posting it. The station did not name the person. In a statement, the Lions said: “Providing our fans with a safe and enjoyable experience at all Ford Field events is of the utmost importance and an absolute priority for our organization. A core component of our guest conduct policy is the expectation that all fans are respectful and considerate to each other regardless of their personal beliefs or differences.” The Lions did not comment specifically on the incident in question.

NFL – Cushing banned by the NFL
Houston Texans linebacker Brian Cushing has been suspended for 10 games by the NFL for violating the league’s performance enhancing policy. The punishment comes seven years after the 2009 Defensive Rookie of the Year served a four-game ban under the same policy. Cushing is currently in the NFL’s concussion protocol after being injured in Houston’s opening loss to Jacksonville.

NFL – Lawyer given 18 months in prison for defrauding NFL players
A former Chicago attorney has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for orchestrating a tax fraud scheme that impacted the finances of several National Football League players. During a Wednesday hearing, U.S. District Judge Harry Leinenweber said Gary Stern’s scheme not only defrauded the Internal Revenue Service out of millions of dollars in tax revenue but also financially damaged victims like former NFL linebacker Adalius Thomas.  Thomas, who played with Super Bowl XXXV champions New England Patriots, told he court his credit has been so ruined by Stern’s schemes that he can’t lease a car. Before he was sentenced, the 58-year-old Stern wept as he apologized to his family and victims.  Stern pleaded guilty last year to funneling renewable energy tax credits through multiple business entities for wealthy clients to claim at least nearly $5 million in tax credits. Nearly 20 current and former NFL stars lost money as part of the fraud.

Tennis – Serena Williams announces baby’s birth
Serena Williams says on social media that she gave birth to a baby girl named Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. The tennis star posted about the birth on her Instagram and Twitter accounts. She says the baby was born on Sept. 1 and weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces. One posting also says about the newborn, “Grand Slam Titles: 1.”  The 35-year-old Williams won her 23rd Grand Slam singles title at the Australian Open in January, while she was pregnant.

Olympics – Olympic double: IOC says yes to Paris in 24, and LA for 28
The International Olympic Committee has formally awarded Los Angeles the 2028 Summer Games following Wednesday’s vote by IOC members. The city’s bid committee ceded the 2024 games to Paris and was given millions of dollars of financial sweeteners for accepting the later date. L.A. officials have said their proposal can stay within budget by relying on the region’s many existing stadiums and arenas, including the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and Staples Center.

Olympics – IOC president warned 8 years ago about Nuzman, Rio Olympics
A former member of the Brazilian Olympic committee has shown The Associated Press letters he sent to the IOC eight years ago that warned against awarding the games to Rio de Janeiro, and cautioned against the administration of Carlos Nuzman. Nuzman, an IOC member who headed last year’s Rio Olympics, was held for police questioning last week for his alleged part in a vote-buying scheme to land the games in Brazil. Alberto Murray Neto, a lawyer who served with Nuzman for 12 years on the Brazilian Olympic committee, warned then-IOC President Jacques Rogge about investigations into Nuzman’s financial conduct at the Brazilian committee, and about bylaw changes that allowed him to maintain the presidency. The corruption allegations comes as the IOC met Wednesday in Lima, Peru, and awarded the 2024 Olympics to Paris, and the 2028 Olympics to Los Angeles.

NCAA Football – Big Ten – Indiana schedule change
Indiana will host Charleston Southern on Oct. 7, replacing this weekend’s game against Florida International that was canceled because of the ongoing effects of Hurricane Irma. The game contract between Indiana and Football Championship Subdivision member Charleston Southern has been signed, and the kickoff time will be announced at a later date. The Hoosiers next play against Georgia Southern on Sept. 23.

NHL – Edmonton’s Northlands Coliseum closing its doors
The Edmonton city council has unanimously approved a plan to shutter Northlands Coliseum on Jan. 1. The arena has been mostly vacant since the NHL’s Oilers moved to the new downtown Rogers Place last year. “The decision to permanently close the Coliseum reflects an ongoing commitment to use taxpayers’ money responsibly in all questions about the status and upkeep of the facility,” the city said in a statement. The Coliseum opened in November 1974 when the Oilers where in the World Hockey Association.

CFL – CFL eliminates full contact padded practices during season
The Canadian Football League is eliminating full-contact padded practices during the season and is extending its schedule to 21 weeks to help reduce the risk of injury.  The league and CFL Players Association made the joint announcement Wednesday. The change is effective immediately. Teams were previously allowed to hold a total of 17 padded practices following training camp. In the NFL, clubs can have 11 padded practices over the first 11 weeks of the season, a maximum of one per week. After that, clubs can have three more padded practices for a total of 14. Starting next year, the CFL regular season will be extended a week to 21, giving players more rest time between games.     As a result, each CFL team will have three off weeks instead of two.
