Indians 11, White Sox 2 – Indians win club-record 15th straight
Corey Kluber struck out 13, and Erik Gonzalez hit two of Cleveland’s five homers as the Cleveland Indians won a franchise-record 15th straight game, beating the Chicago White Sox 11-2 on Thursday night.  Edwin Encarnacion, Francisco Lindor and Greg Allen also went deep for Cleveland. Kluber (15-4) allowed three hits and two runs while walking one over seven innings. Gonzalez, who homered in the third and ninth innings, drove in four runs. Allen hit his first career home run as part of a three-run seventh inning. Lindor went 3-for-6 with three runs and finished a double shy of hitting for the cycle. Chicago’s Mike Pelfrey (3-11), who started after Carlos Rodon was forced to miss his scheduled start with shoulder stiffness, gave up seven runs and eight hits over four innings.

Cubs 8, Pirates 2 – Almora, Happ lead Cubs to 8-2 rout of Pirates
Albert Almora Jr. hit a two-run homer, and Ian Happ had three hits as Chicago walloped Pittsburgh 8-2.  The Cubs’ Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-2 with two runs, two RBIs and two walks. Chicago’s Jon Lester (10-7), in his second start since coming off the disabled list, gave up one run and five hits in six innings. He walked four and struck out five. The Pirates’ Jameson Taillon (7-6) allowed six runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Taillon hasn’t won since Aug. 11.

Tennis – US Open – Stephens, Keys advance
It will be Sloane Stephens versus Madison Keys in Saturday’s U.S. Open women’s final. The unseeded Stephens earned a spot in her first Grand Slam final by outlasting No. 9 Venus Williams, 1-6, 6-0, 7-5. Stephens quickly went up a service break in the third set, but she eventually trailed 5-4 and was two points from defeat before taking the last three games. The rally ended Williams’ quest to reach the final for the first time in 15 years.  Stephens is just the fourth unseeded player to reach the U.S. Open women’s final in the 49 years of the Open era, and the first since Roberta Vinci in 2015. The 15th-seeded Keys rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe to reach her first Grand Slam final.  Keys won 19 of the first 22 points and raced to a 5-0 lead in an opening set that lasted just 23 minutes. She continued to dominate despite an upper right leg injury that caused her to call the trainer to be taped midway through the second set.  The men’s semifinals are Friday.

NCAA Football – Michigan faces Cincinnati in home opener
Wilton Speight had a shaky start. And, Jim Harbaugh made him sit. Michigan’s quarterback was benched briefly in the second quarter of last week’s season-opening win. Speight made the most of his second chance to play in a 33-17 win over then-No. 17 Florida 33-17. He earned another start for the No. 8 Wolverines against Cincinnati on Saturday in their home opener.

NCAA Football – Spartans face “Dangerous” Western Michigan
Western Michigan looks dangerous again heading into this weekend’s matchup at Michigan State. The Broncos lost their star quarterback, their star receiver and their coach from last year’s team that went to the Cotton Bowl. None of that seemed like a big deal when WMU kept it close in a 49-31 loss to Southern California last weekend.

NCAA Football – No. 22 Florida cancels home opener, South Florida-UConn postponed
Tenth-ranked Florida State and No. 22 Florida have canceled their respective home openers because of impending Hurricane Irma. The Seminoles were supposed to play Louisiana-Monroe, while the Gators faced Northern Colorado. Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin says it “become obvious that playing a football game is not the right thing to do.” Neither game will be made up. Also, South Florida and UConn called off their scheduled football game Saturday because of Irma. No makeup date was immediately announced.
