Chicago Cubs 1, Pittsburgh Pirates 0

Royals 13, Tigers 2 – Perez homers twice as Royals rout Tigers 13-2
Salvador Perez homered twice as Kansas City broke open a close game to rout Detroit 13-2.  The Royals snapped a 2-2 tie with four runs in the seventh, then scored seven in the eighth. Perez drove in three runs, while Whit Merrifield had three doubles and three RBIs. Alcides Escobar had four hits, falling a homer short of the cycle.  Jason Hammel (8-10) got the win, giving up two runs, nine hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out six while winning for the third time in four starts. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd (5-9) pitched six-plus innings, allowing four runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Indians 5, White Sox 1 – Carlos Carrasco throws complete game as Indians win 14th straight
Carlos Carrasco allowed three hits in a complete game, giving the Cleveland Indians their 14th straight win in a 5-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night.  Cleveland equaled its longest winning streak in franchise history and also won its 10th straight road game as the right-hander lost his shutout with two outs in the ninth inning when Adam Engel homered.  Carrasco (14-6) faced 28 batters and threw 97 pitches in his eighth career complete game, throwing 76 strikes.  Carlos Santana hit a two-run home run as Cleveland added three runs in the eighth inning to break open a 1-0 game.

Cubs 1, Pirates 0 – Avila delivers in 9th, Cubs top Pirates despite Cole’s gem
Alex Avila knocked an RBI triple in the ninth inning, capping a duel between Jose Quintana and Gerrit Cole and lifting Chicago over Pittsburgh 1-0.  After Cole limited Chicago to two hits over eight innings, Avila scored pinch-runner Leonys Martin from second base with a drive to the right-field corner off reliever Daniel Hudson (2-6).  The only hits against Cole were Javier Baez’s infield single in the second and John Jay’s single in the eighth. Wade Davis struck out two during a perfect ninth for his 29th save, preserving a win for Pedro Strop (4-4).

MLB – Red Sox star Pedroia says why such a fuss over sign stealing
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia says he doesn’t think he did anything wrong when he tried to steal signs from the New York Yankees.  The 34-year-old Pedroia said Wednesday that he’s been doing that in baseball since junior high school. Pedroia and several teammates were accused of using an Apple Watch to relay signals of opposing catchers. Baseball has no rules against stealing signs, but doesn’t allow the use of technology in the endeavor. On Tuesday, The New York Times reported that the AL East-leading Red Sox admitted to Major League Baseball that they used the watch to relay the signals to Boston players. The allegations were levied by the Yankees to MLB. Pedroia says players know that stealing signs is part of the game and doesn’t understand why there’s been such a fuss.

Tennis – US Open – No Rafa vs. Roger at US Open: del Potro beats Federer in QF
Roger Federer was unable to set up his first U.S. Open match against Rafael Nadal.  Federer lost in the quarterfinals to Juan Martin del Potro in four sets.  The U.S. Open is the only Grand Slam tournament where Federer and Nadal have never met. Del Potro will face Nadal in the semifinals. Madison Keys has made it an all-American women’s final four at the U.S. Open. The No. 15 seed beat Kaia Kanepi 6-3, 6-3 to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the second time.  She will face No. 20 CoCo Vandeweghe on Thursday night in the second semifinal, after ninth-seeded Venus Williams faces unseeded Sloane Stephens.

NFL – Dolphins’ opener against Bucs postponed until Nov. 19
The NFL says the Miami Dolphins’ season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be postponed until Nov. 19 because of Hurricane Irma. The game can be moved to Week 11 because that had been a bye week for both teams. NFL officials earlier announced the game would not be played in Miami this week, and then decided against moving it to a neutral site.  Both teams had said switching the game to Nov. 19 was less than ideal because it means playing the entire season without a break.

NFL – Trubisky to open season as Bears’ No. 2 QB
No. 2 overall draft pick Mitchell Trubisky will open the season as the Chicago Bears’ No. 2 quarterback.  Coach John Fox said Trubisky will back up Mike Glennon when the Bears host the defending NFC champion Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. The Bears had said they would treat this as sort of a redshirt season with Trubisky behind Glennon and veteran Mark Sanchez. But after starting 13 games at North Carolina and working primarily out of the shotgun, the rookie has come along quicker than anticipated.  General manager Ryan Pace once again insisted Glennon is the starter. But the question remains is for how long.  Trubisky dazzled at times in the preseason and sparked a debate in Chicago over who should start.

NFL – Bears release injured LB Lamarr Houston
The Chicago Bears have released oft-injured linebacker Lamarr Houston.  Houston was placed on injured reserve after hurting his knee in the final preseason game and was let go Wednesday.  Houston was limited to 26 games in three years with the Bears because of injuries to both knees. His first season in Chicago ended when he tore his right anterior cruciate ligament celebrating a meaningless sack in a blowout loss at New England. Houston rebounded with eight sacks while playing in 16 games in 2015. But a torn ACL in his left knee last season limited him to two games.  Houston played for Oakland from 2010-13.

NFL – NFL hires 21 full-time officials, including 4 referees
The NFL has hired 21 officials to work on a full-time basis, including four referees.  Those refs are Brad Allen, Walt Anderson, Jerome Boger and Pete Morelli. Overall, there are representatives of all seven on-field officiating positions. Both the league and the officials’ union agreed to experiment with full-time officials as part of the current collective bargaining agreement. In August, the NFL said it would hire full-time game officials for the 2017 season. In the past, NFL game officials had other jobs, including some lucrative ones.  The most experienced official hired full-time is line judge Mark Steinkerchner, now in his 24th NFL season. Least experienced is side judge Jonah Monroe with three years.

NBA – Pacers owner denies report about possibly suing Lakers
Indiana Pacers owner Herb Simon is denying a report that the team might sue the Los Angeles Lakers for tampering with Paul George.  The NBA fined the Lakers $500,000 last week for violating league rules and there was a report that the Pacers were considering legal action, too.  In a statement issued Wednesday, Simon said the Pacers agreed with the league’s decision and that the team simply wanted to move on.

NCAA Basketball – Michigan State to pay tribute to coaching icon Heathcote
Michigan State’s basketball team will wear patches throughout the upcoming season to honor former coach Jud Heathcote. The Feb. 10 home game against Purdue also has been named the Jud Heathcote Tribute Game.  Heathcote died Aug. 28 in Spokane, Washington, at the age of 90. Heathcote retired in 1995 after a 19-year career at Michigan State. He led the Spartans and Magic Johnson to the 1979 NCAA championship, won three Big Ten titles and appeared in nine NCAA tournaments. He got his start as a head coach in college at Montana in 1971. A public memorial service is scheduled Sept. 23 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Spokane.
