MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Kansas City Royals 7, Detroit Tigers 6
Cleveland Indians 5, Chicago White Sox 3
Pittsburgh Pirates 12, Chicago Cubs 0

Royals 7, Tigers 6 – Homers and defense lead Royals past Tigers, 7-6
Eric Hosmer, Salvador Perez and Alcides Escobar homered for Kansas City, which denied Detroit with its defense.  Alex Gordon reached well over the left-field fence to rob Mikie Mahtook of a three-run homer, while Lorenzo Cain’s sliding catch took two RBIs away from Jose Iglesias. Since trading Justin Verlander and Justin Upton on Thursday, the Tigers are 0-5 and have been outscored 36-11. The Tigers trailed 7-3 going into the ninth, but Nicholas Castellanos hit a three-run homer off Brandon Maurer with one out. Maurer struck out Efren Navarro before James McCann and Jeimer Candelario singled to put the potential winning run on base. Scott Alexander replaced Maurer and retired Mahtook for his third save in five chances. Jake Junis (7-2) improved to 5-0 in his last seven starts, giving up three runs on seven hits in five innings. Artie Lewicki (0-1) pitched five innings in his major league debut, allowing five runs on 11 hits and a walk.

Indians 5, White Sox 3 – Bauer sharp again as Indians win 12th straight
Jose Ramirez homered again, Trevor Bauer earned his eighth straight win and the Cleveland Indians beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 on Monday for their 12th victory in a row.  Ramirez connected a day after tying the major league record with five extra-base hits, including two homers. Bauer (15-8) gave up two runs on three hits, striking out nine in 6 1/3 innings. The AL Central leaders moved closer to the team-record 14-game winning streak they posted last season. James Shields (2-6) kept the White Sox in the game before taking a line drive by Francisco Mejia off the knee in the seventh. Shields limped off the field after his 11th consecutive start without a win, and is considered day-to-day. Cody Allen worked around two walks to pitch a scoreless ninth for his 24th save in 28 chances.

Pirates 12, Cubs 0 – Jake Arrieta exits with injury, Pirates rout Cubs 12-0
Cubs ace Jake Arrieta exited in the third inning with a hamstring cramp, and Pittsburgh routed the NL Central leaders.  Arrieta (14-9) clutched his leg in obvious pain. The 2015 Cy Young Award winner tried to stretch out his right leg during a visit by manager Joe Maddon and the trainers, but a test pitch ended with Arrieta unable to let go of the ball. Arrieta said he thinks he’ll be able to make his next scheduled start on Saturday against Milwaukee. Josh Bell broke the NL record for most home runs by a rookie switch-hitter with his 24th. He topped the 23 by Chipper Jones for Atlanta in 1995. Chad Kuhl (7-10) allowed four hits in seven innings. The Pirates have won three in a row.

NFL – AP source: NFL considers moving Dolphins opener against Bucs
Hurricane Irma could alter the NFL’s opening-week schedule.  A person familiar with the discussions tells The Associated Press the league is considering moving Sunday’s Dolphins-Buccaneers game in Miami to another site or playing it earlier this week because of the hurricane. The person says the game could be held Thursday or Friday with Irma expected to threaten South Florida over the weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. EDT Sunday.

Tennis – US Open – Men’s top seed Nadal advances to quarterfinals
Top seed Rafael Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer have made it into the U.S. Open men’s quarterfinals with straight-sets victories. Andrey Rublev knocked out ninth seed David Goffin, and Juan Martin Del Potro beat No. 6 Dominic Thiem to reach the quarters. Top seed Karolina Pliskova advanced to the women’s quarterfinals by winning Monday, as did 15th seed Madison Keys, No. 20 Coco Vandeweghe and qualifier Kaia Kanepi.

Golf – PGA – Thomas wins TPC Boston for 5th win of the year
Justin Thomas has picked up his fifth PGA title of the year by rallying to beat Jordan Spieth by three strokes at the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston. Thomas was two strokes back at the turn before completing a 5-under 66 that left him 17 under for the tournament, three shots ahead of Spieth and four in front of Marc Leishman. Spieth wasted a birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie start to his round and earned runner-up status for the second straight week in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

NCAA Football – College Football
Last Night
(25) Tennessee 42, Georgia Tech 41 – 2 OT

(25) Tennessee 42, Georgia Tech 41 – 2 OT
John Kelly scored the tying touchdown on an 11-yard run with 1:29 remaining in regulation and added two more TD runs in overtime to help No. 25 Tennessee down Georgia Tech, 42-41 in double-overtime in Atlanta. The Vols didn’t clinch the victory until TaQuon Marshall was stopped on a two-point conversion after the Yellow Jackets elected to go for the win instead of a game-tying extra point that would have forced a third OT. Marshall ran for 249 yards and set a Georgia Tech record with five rushing TDs.

NCAA Football – FSU/Alabama game results in 3 players with season ending injuries
No. 1 Alabama has lost two key linebackers to season-ending injuries. Terrell Lewis and Christian Miller were hurt in the Crimson Tide’s season-opening 24-7 win over No. 3 Florida State. Coach Nick Saban says both are set for surgery.  Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois will have season-ending left knee surgery on Tuesday. Coach Jimbo Fisher says the sophomore faces four to six months of rehabilitation after he was hurt during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s loss to top-ranked Alabama in Atlanta.
