Last Night
Chicago White Sox 7, Detroit Tigers 1
Philadelphia Phillies 6, Chicago Cubs 3

White Sox 7, Tigers 1 – Giolito gets 1st big league win as White Sox beat Tigers 7-1
Lucas Giolito threw seven scoreless innings to earn his first major league victory, and Matt Davidson homered to help the Chicago White Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 on Sunday. Giolito (1-1) limited the Tigers to three hits in his second start with the White Sox after they acquired him in a December trade with Washington for outfielder Adam Eaton. The right-hander had never pitched past the sixth in five previous major league starts. Giolito allowed four runs in six innings against Minnesota in his season debut Tuesday. Yolmer Sanchez had three hits for the White Sox, who have won four of five and took two of three from the Tigers. Ian Kinsler hit his 14th home run for the Tigers, who lost for the 16th time in 21 games.

Phillies 6, Cubs 3 – Hoskins homers, starts triple play; Phillies beat Cubs 6-3
Big-hitting rookie Rhys Hoskins homered for the fifth straight game and made a diving catch to start a game-changing triple play in the fifth inning, leading the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Sunday. Nick Williams also homered for the Phillies, who have gone deep in nine straight games, hitting 20 homers over that span. Hoskins led off the eighth with a drive to left-center to give him 11 home runs in his first 18 games, becoming the fastest in major league history to reach 11 homers. Hoskins, who has 24 RBIs, was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Aug. 10. Nick Pivetta (5-9) allowed three runs on six hits in five innings to get the win. Hector Neris worked a perfect ninth for his 16th save in 19 chances. Anthony Rizzo had a pair of RBIs for the NL Central-leading Cubs, who are two games in front of Milwaukee.

White Sox are off

MLB – Martinez heads to DL with heart issue
The Tigers have placed designated hitter Victor Martinez on the 10-day disabled list because of an irregular heartbeat, the second time he has landed on the DL for the condition this season. Manager Brad Ausmus says Martinez experienced a racing heart after his last at-bat during Saturday’s 6-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.

WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association
Yesterday
New York Liberty 92, Chicago Sky 62

Liberty 92, Sky 62 – Charles leads Liberty to eighth straight win
Tina Charles scored 22 points and New York cruised to a 92-62 win over the Chicago Sky on Sunday for the Liberty’s eighth consecutive victory. The win clinched at least the four-seed in the playoffs for New York (20-12), giving the team a first-round postseason bye. The Liberty are a half-game behind Connecticut for the third seed. Charles had 18 points in the first half as New York jumped out to a 46-29 advantage at the break. Stefanie Dolson scored 22 points to lead Chicago (12-19), which moved closer to being eliminated from the playoff chase.

NBA – Cavs-Celts deal could be scrubbed
Two people with knowledge of the situation tell The Associated Press that the Cleveland Cavaliers are doing a “deep and thorough” review of their blockbuster trade that sent Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics for a package that included fellow All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas. The two people say the deal has not been completed, and that the Cavs are continuing a medical evaluation on Thomas. The six-year veteran injured his hip during the Eastern Conference finals against Cleveland last season.

NFL – National Football League Preseason – Week 3
Yesterday
Chicago Bears 19, Tennessee Titans 7

Bears 19, Titans 7 – Glennon helps himself with TD as Bears beat Titans 19-7<
Mike Glennon capped an opening 96-yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Dion Sims , helping his case to be Chicago’s starting quarterback as the Bears beat the Tennessee Titans 19-7 Sunday in the third preseason game. Glennon was an efficient 11 of 18 for 134 yards passing despite losing starting wide receiver Cameron Meredith late in the first quarter. Meredith was carted
off with an injured left knee. Mitchell Trubisky, the second overall pick out of North Carolina, opened the third quarter with the Bears’ starters. But Trubisky threw two incompletions as
the Bears (2-1) went three-and-out. Trubisky also fumbled a snap on his next series, though he rebounded with a 45-yard TD pass to Tanner Gentry for a 19-7 lead in the fourth quarter.

NFL – Bears lose WR Meredith
Chicago wide receiver Cameron Meredith was carted off the field after hurting his left knee late in the first quarter against the Tennessee Titans. Meredith made a 16-yard catch Sunday when he was hit by Titans cornerback Logan Ryan and safety Johnathan Cyprien. The Bears said long snapper Patrick Scales also is out with an injured knee.

NFL – Lions put Hill on IR, sign Lott for DL help
The Detroit Lions have put defensive tackle Jordan Hill on injured reserve with a bicep injury. The Lions also announced Sunday that they have signed free agent defensive tackle Derrick Lott.  Detroit has already been without defensive lineman Kerry Hyder, who went down with a severe Achilles tendon injury in the team’s first preseason game. Hill played in four games last year for the Jacksonville Jaguars and was with Seattle the previous three seasons. Lott spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders during the 2016 preseason. Prior to that, he was on Tampa Bay’s practice squad during the 2015 season.

NFL – Browns rookie quarterback Kizer will start season opener
Rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer will start the season opener against Pittsburgh, the 27th different QB to start for Cleveland since 1999. Kizer showed coach Hue Jackson enough in Saturday’s exhibition start against Tampa Bay to secure the job. Kizer was given the assignment earlier this week by Jackson, who picked the second-round pick over veterans Brock Osweiler and Cody Kessler. Jackson made Kizer’s Week 1 start official on Sunday, saying he “earned the right.” Kizer played the entire first half against the Buccaneers, completing just 6 of 18 passes for 93 yards and an interception. But he showed the poise Jackson was hoping to see from the former Notre Dame standout. The Browns have been cycling thorough quarterbacks at an alarming rate, and their inability to find the right one has resulted in annual ineptitude. Cleveland started three quarterbacks while going 1-15 last season.

Golf – PGA – Johnson rallies to win
Dustin Johnson stormed back from a five-shot deficit on the front nine and beat Jordan Spieth in a playoff at The Northern Trust.  Johnson capped regulation with an 18-foot par putt that swirled around the cup and fell in the back to match Spieth’s two-putt par from 75 feet. Johnson won it with a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim the opening FedEx Cup playoff event. Spieth began the round with a three-stroke lead before shooting a 1-under 69 that left him 13 under for the tournament. Johnson closed with a 66.

Golf – LPGA – Park wins in Ontario
Sung Hyun Park earned her second career LPGA victory by taking the Canadian Pacific Women’s Open in Ottawa. Park birdied the final hole for a 7-under 64 and a two-stroke victory over
fellow South Korean player Mirim Lee. Park finished at 13-under, one month after claiming her first tour victory at the U.S. Women’s Open last month.  Michelle Wie withdrew before the final round to have her appendix removed. She was taken to Ottawa Hospital.

LLWS – Japan wins LLWS
Japan has won the Little League World Series for the fifth time in eight years. The squad from Tokyo banged out three homers in the fourth inning of a 12-2 rout of Lufkin, Texas. Lufkin appeared on its way to a rout following a pair of first-inning home runs, but Japan cruised the rest of the way for its 11th championship.
