MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Detroit Tigers 10, New York Yankees 6
Chicago White Sox 5, Minnesota Twins 1
Cincinnati Reds 4, Chicago Cubs 2

Tigers 10, Yankees 6 – 3 bench-clearers, 8 ejections as Tigers top Yankees 10-6
Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera and Yankees catcher Austin Romine wrestled on the ground near home plate during the first of three bench-clearing altercations during the Tigers’ testy 10-6 victory over New York on Thursday. Five players were ejected, along with both managers and the Yankees’ bench coach. Justin Upton and James McCann homered for Detroit, and Gary Sanchez went deep for the Yankees, but that all became secondary on a day when the umpires had their hands full trying to maintain order. Major League Baseball figures to be busy now, sorting out likely suspensions that could especially hurt the playoff-contending Yankees. The winning and losing pitchers, Detroit’s Alex Wilson (2-4) and New York’s Dellin Betances (3-5), were among those ejected. Betances was tossed after hitting a batter in the helmet with a pitch, and argued with the umps. The ill will carried over to the Detroit dugout, too, where star pitcher Justin Verlander and teammates Victor Martinez and Nicholas Castellanos got into some sort of dispute. Shane Greene got five outs for his fourth save.

White Sox 5, Twins 1 – Holland helps White Sox beat sloppy Twins 5-1
Derek Holland pitched six effective innings, Yolmer Sanchez homered and Chicago beat sloppy Minnesota.  Holland (7-13) bounced back nicely from a string of bad outings, yielding one run and three hits in just his second win in two months. The left-hander had allowed 20 runs and 20 hits in 11 innings over his previous five appearances. Chicago had dropped six of eight before welcoming Minnesota to town for a five-game series. It was a prime opportunity for the contending Twins (65-62) to strengthen their playoff positioning, but the last-place White Sox (50-76) won three times.  Minnesota, which began the day with a half-game lead in the race for the second AL wild card, lost 4-3 on Wednesday night on Tim Anderson’s game-ending RBI single. Pitcher Jose Berrios (11-6) and first baseman Mitch Garver each committed a costly error in the series finale.

Reds 4, Cubs 2 – Peraza’s pinch-hit double in 8th rallies Reds over Cubs 4-2
Jose Peraza had a pinch-hit, bases-loaded double in the eighth inning, rallying Cincinnati over Chicago to avoid a series sweep. The Reds loaded the bases with two outs against Pedro Strop (3-4), putting together two hits and a walk. Peraza, who was 0 for 4 off the bench this season, doubled over the head of Ian Happ in center for a 3-2 lead. Strop let in another run with a wild pitch.  The comeback ended the Cubs’ five-game winning streak, one shy of their season high. Chicago has moved into first place in the NL Central by going 25-13 since the All-Star break, leading Milwaukee by three games. Michael Lorenzen (8-2) fanned three of the four batters he faced. Raisel Iglesias picked up his 24th save in 25 chances.

NFL – Draft had economic impact of almost $95 million for Philly
April’s NFL draft had an economic impact of almost $95 million for Philadelphia, with direct spending of $56.1 million. That’s according to a report commissioned by the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau and conducted by Temple University’s Sport Industry Research Center. The survey found the three-day event at Philadelphia’s Art Museum drew a record 250,000 attendees from 42 states.

NFL – Elliott expected to play Saturday
Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is likely to make his preseason debut Saturday against Oakland.  The game is expected to be his only action before the 2016 NFL rushing leader
begins a suspension for a domestic violence incident.  Elliott has appealed the six-game suspension he received after the NFL concluded he used physical force against his girlfriend at the time last summer in Columbus, Ohio. The appeal is scheduled for next week.

Boxing – Bookies will take a bath if McGregor knocks out Mayweather
If Conor McGregor manages to knock out Floyd Mayweather Jr., Las Vegas bookmakers will suffer the biggest single event loss in the history of sports betting.  McGregor fans are flooding casinos with small bets on the longshot mixed martial artist. He makes his pro boxing debut Saturday night against Mayweather, who is 49-0 and considered the best defensive fighter of his generation.   About 95 percent of the bets are on McGregor. Mayweather bets are much bigger _ an average of $4,000 per bet to McGregor’s $125 _ but that isn’t enough to cover the casinos’ potential losses.  William Hill oddsmaker Nick Bogdanovich says his chain will suffer its worst lost ever if McGregor gets a knockout.

The Palace of Auburn Hills to close after Bob Seger concert
An arena that’s been the home of the Detroit Pistons for nearly three decades will close next month. Palace Sports and Entertainment confirmed its plans Thursday for The Palace of Auburn Hills, saying a Bob Seger concert on Sept. 23 will be the arena’s final event. The Pistons announced last year that the NBA team would move to Little Caesars Arena, a new venue in Detroit that will also house the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings. The Pistons are heading there after 29 seasons playing their home games in Auburn Hills. Future plans for The Palace site haven’t been announced. Detroit will have all four of its major pro teams playing within a few blocks of each other, with the Tigers and Lions at stadiums near Little Caesars Arena.

NCAA Basketball – End of the line for longtime tournament
The University of Alaska Anchorage says the 40th Great Alaska Shootout will be the last edition of the long-running college basketball tournament. Chancellor Sam Gingerich says the university can no longer sustain funding for the annual Thanksgiving week tournament. The shootout began in 1978 and is the longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament.
