Pirates 6, Tigers 3 – McCutchen, Kuhl lift Pirates over reeling Tigers 6-3
Pittsburgh’s Chad Kuhl picked up the first RBI of his major league career at the plate. Kuhl (5-7) looked considerably more comfortable on the mound, taking a shutout into the sixth to improve to 4-1 since June 20. He struck out six and walked just one as the Pirates doubled up the slumping Detroit Tigers 6-3. Andrew McCutchen took Tigers starter Matt Boyd to the seats in center field leading off the fourth for his 23rd home run of the season and franchise-record 13th interleague homer. David Freese added two hits and an RBI for the Pirates, who have five won of six to pull within a game of .500 (56-57). Felipe Rivero worked a perfect ninth for his 10th save. Jim Adduci hit an RBI double for the Tigers and Mikie Mahtook had two of Detroit’s five hits. Boyd lasted just four-plus innings, losing for the first time since his recall from Triple-A Toledo at the All-Star break. Detroit has lost four straight games, its fifth skid of at least four games this season.
White Sox 8, Astros 5 – Rookie Smith powers White Sox past Astros 8-5
Rookie Kevan Smith had a home run and drove in four runs for the Chicago White Sox in an 8-5 win over Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Left-hander Derek Holland (6-11) earned his first win since June 13, despite issuing seven walks in 5 2/3 innings. He had been 0-5 in eight starts and one relief appearance since beating Baltimore. Chicago (42-68) won for the fourth time in 23 games, stopping a six-game losing streak. Keuchel (9-2) allowed a season-high eight runs and 10 hits in four innings for Houston (71-41). He had a 1.67 ERA when he went on the disabled list for the second time with a neck injury, on June 8. The All-Star left-hander has a 10.50 ERA in three starts since his return. Avisail Garcia and Yoan Moncada had RBI singles in the first inning as the White Sox took a 3-0 lead. It was Garcia’s first at-bat since coming off the disabled list following a strained thumb ligament that had sidelined the All-Star since July 25.
Giants 6, Cubs 3 – Buster Posey’s three-run homer helps lift Giants past Cubs
Buster Posey hit a three-run homer in the first that was upheld after review and later stole a base, Ty Blach won his second straight start and the San Francisco Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 6-3 on Tuesday night. Replay showed Posey’s drive to left-center had just enough to clear the wall and left fielder Jon Jay’s outstretched glove before being caught by a fan. Blach (8-7) hit an RBI single to help his cause and the Giants snapped a four-game losing streak to the Cubs with just their third win in the last 10 against Chicago, which rallied to win Game 4 of the NL Division Series and eliminate the Giants last October on the way to a World Series title. Blach also beat the Cubs again after a May 22 win at Wrigley Field, allowing two runs on seven hits in seven innings Tuesday with three strikeouts and a walk.

MLB – World Series to start Oct. 24; Game 7 would be Nov. 1
The World Series is scheduled to start on Oct. 24 and Game 7 would be on Nov. 1 _ spilling into an unusual month for the sixth time. Major League Baseball announced its postseason schedule on Tuesday. The playoffs open with the AL wild-card game on Oct. 3, followed by the NL wild-card game the following day. Division Series start Oct. 5, the AL Championship Series on Oct. 13 and the NL Championship Series the next day. The World Series ended in November in 2001, 2009, 2010, 2015 and last year. The latest a World Series game has been played is Nov. 4, in 2001 and 2009.

NFL – Cutler takes part in first practice
Jay Cutler is slinging footballs again. The new Miami Dolphins quarterback practiced Tuesday for the first time since December, marking the start of his comeback from a brief retirement. Cutler participated in 11-on-11 drills and a lot of one-on-one conversations as he learns the names of his teammates. When the workout ended, the 34-year-old Cutler said he had no second thoughts about deciding to renew his working relationship with coach Adam Gase and return for another season. Cutler agreed to delay the start of his network TV career and instead signed a $10 million, one-year contract with Miami. He’s expected to start in place of Ryan Tannehill, who is out with a knee injury likely to sideline him for the entire season.
NHL – Olczyk battling colon cancer
Former NHL forward and coach Eddie Olczyk has been diagnosed with colon cancer. Olczyk, who turns 51 on Aug. 16, had surgery last week, and Chicago Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry says he “will be undergoing further treatment in the coming weeks, including chemotherapy.” Olczyk is a color analyst for Blackhawks games and nationally for NBC. Olczyk played 16 seasons in the NHL, helping the New York Rangers win the Stanley Cup in 1994. He also coached the Pittsburgh Penguins for the 2003-04 season and part of the 2005-06 season. Olczyk says he expects to return to the broadcast booth after he completes his treatment. He also thanked his family, the Blackhawks, NBC Sports and his friends and fans for their support.
NCAA Basketball – NCAA lauds Kentucky, Syracuse, Big Ten for attendance
Kentucky, Syracuse and the Big Ten recorded three of the top NCAA basketball attendance marks during the 2016-17 season. In a short video released by the NCAA on Tuesday, the two storied programs and the powerhouse league were recognized for their accomplishments. The Wildcats led the nation with an average attendance of 23,461. The Orange was the only team to top 400,000 in total attendance, packing 444,809 into the Carrier Dome in just 21 home games. The Big Ten bested all conferences in men’s basketball attendance for the 41st consecutive season, totaling 3,119,823 for home and league tournament games. That’s the most in Big Ten history. The conference averaged 12,235 a game across its 14 schools. Eleven of those ranked among the top 40 in average attendance, with Wisconsin leading the way at 17,286 a game. Missouri’s women’s program was lauded for notching the country’s highest increase in average home attendance. The Tigers were up 3,635 a game, more evidence that fans embrace winners. Coach Robin Pingeton’s team went 15-1 at Mizzou Arena last season and has won 31 of its last 35 home games.
Golf – Attorney: Tiger Woods won’t attend impaired driving hearing
The attorney for Tiger Woods says the golfer will not attend his arraignment on a driving under the influence charge. Under court rules, Woods’ attorney can enter a not guilty plea on his behalf Wednesday. Any other plea would require Woods’ attendance. Woods could still eventually enter a program for first-time DUI defendants. He would have to plead guilty to reckless driving and receive a year’s probation and other conditions. His attorney, Douglas Duncan, said in an email Tuesday to The AP that Woods will not be attending the hearing, but he didn’t elaborate. Woods was arrested in May when officers found him asleep in his car. He had no alcohol in his system but told officers he had taken painkillers for his injured back and an insomnia medication.
Golf – PGA – Short-changed at Quail Hollow
Some of golf’s top players were sporting a new look as they practiced in preparation for the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. Tournament officials are allowing players to wear shorts during practice rounds this week, a first in the tournament’s 99-year history. World No. 1 Zach Johnson showed off his legs, as did Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler. But on a rain-soaked Tuesday, only about half of the players took advantage of the change, with many like Rory McIlroy choosing to stick with long pants.
