Tigers 7, Orioles 5 – Tigers end Orioles’ 5-game winning streak with 7-5 victory
Justin Upton homered and drove in two runs, and the Detroit Tigers shook off two rain delays and a triple play in a 7-5 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night. Ian Kinsler hit his 45th career leadoff home run for the Tigers, who built a 7-0 lead in the third inning and ended Baltimore’s five-game winning streak. After enduring nearly five hours of rain delays Wednesday at Yankee Stadium, Detroit ran into more troublesome weather at Camden Yards. The game began 43 minutes late, and only four batters went to the plate before another shower produced a stoppage of 59 minutes. The final pitch came after midnight, just about five hours beyond the scheduled
starting time.

Red Sox 9, White Sox 5 – Devers has 3-run homer for Red Sox in 9-5 win over White Sox
Rick Porcello ended a four-game losing streak with his first win since June as Boston tagged Chicago for 15 hits and the Red Sox beat the White Sox 9-5 on Thursday night. Porcello (5-14) was winless in his last six starts, losing four straight before the Red Sox capitalized on the White Sox’s woes with seven runs in the first two innings. He allowed five runs and seven hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings.  Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer in the first inning for Boston and Mookie Betts added a two-run shot in the second. Andrew Benintendi went 3 for 3, scoring twice and driving in a run as the Red Sox won their third straight. Benintendi reached base all five times he batted, getting hit by a pitch and walking once to go along with two doubles and a single.  Nicky Delmonico hit his first career homer, a three-run shot in the third, for the White Sox. Chicago lost its third straight and fell to 3-15 since the All-Star break.

Diamondbacks 10, Cubs 8 – Paul Goldschmidt has first 3-homer game in D-backs’ win over Cubs
Paul Goldschmidt snapped a tie in the ninth inning with his third long drive of the game, and the Arizona Diamondbacks pulled out a rain-delayed 10-8 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.  The Diamondbacks first baseman hit a 3-2 pitch from Wade Davis (2-1) deep into the right-center bleachers with one out. J.D. Martinez followed with another solo blast off the Cubs closer.  Goldschmidt’s first homer was a three-run shot to the top of the left-center bleachers in the first. His two-run shot in the fifth rocketed down the left field line and bounced high on Waveland Avenue to make it 6-1.  Brandon Drury also homered for Arizona, which remained percentage points ahead of Colorado for the top NL wild card despite blowing a five-run lead.  Willson Contreras hit two home runs and had a career-high six RBI for Chicago, which lost consecutive games for the first time since the All-Star break. The Cubs’ NL Central lead over Milwaukee slipped to 1 1/2 games.

MLB – Tigers place Fulmer on disabled list with elbow injury
The Detroit Tigers have placed right-hander Michael Fulmer on the 10-day disabled list with an elbow injury. Fulmer, the 2016 AL rookie of the year, had been dealing with elbow discomfort for years before it worsened during his last start. An MRI revealed fluid around the elbow, but manager Brad Ausmus says there’s no ligament damage. Fulmer is 10-9 with a 3.58 ERA in 21 starts. Entering play Friday, he had accounted for more than one-fifth of Detroit’s wins this year. To fill out the roster, the Tigers selected the contract of right-hander Edward Mujica from Triple-A Toledo.

NBA – NBA board approves Pistons’ downtown move
The NBA’s board of governors has approved the Detroit Pistons’ relocation to downtown Detroit.      The league announced the approval Thursday. The Pistons will begin playing next season at Little Caesars Arena, a new venue that will also house the Detroit Red Wings. The Pistons are moving there after 29 seasons playing their home games in the suburbs at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Detroit will now have all four of its major pro teams playing within a few blocks of each other. Comerica Park (Tigers) and Ford Field (Lions) are in the same area as Little Caesars Arena. The Pistons had formally announced their plans to move downtown in November.
