Tigers 4, Yankees 3 – Hicks’ 3-run homer leads Tigers over Yanks, Sabathia 4-3
John Hicks hit a three-run homer in his first big league game in more than a month, Justin Upton added a solo drive off CC Sabathia, and the Detroit Tigers held on to beat the New York Yankees 4-3 Tuesday night. A 27-year-old rookie recalled Monday for his fifth major league stint this season, Hicks drove a slider over the right-center field wall in the second inning, capping a 10-pitch at-bat. Upton made it 4-0 in the third when he hit a full-count slider to left-center for his 18th homer. Shane Greene, who took over as closer after Monday’s trade of Justin Wilson to the Chicago Cubs, walked pinch-hitter Jacoby Ellsbury with two outs in the ninth, and bounced a pickoff throw for an error that allowed Ellsbury to reach third. Brett Gardner was intentionally walked and stole second, and rookie Clint Frazier popped out.

Blue Jays 8, White Sox 4 – Smoak, Donaldson homer as Blue Jays beat White Sox 8-4
Justin Smoak hit his 31st homer, Josh Donaldson homered and drove in three runs, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 8-4 on Tuesday night.  Smoak and Donaldson each connected for the second straight night and third time in five games. Donaldson also had a sacrifice fly and RBI double. Marcus Stroman (10-5) went seven innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He was winless in his previous three starts despite a 1.89 ERA in that stretch. Toronto came out on top after dropping three of four and snapped a four-game road losing streak.  Chicago’s Kevan Smith hit a two-run homer batting for injured designated hitter Matt Davidson in the sixth. But the White Sox lost for the 18th time in 22 games.

Cubs 16, Diamondbacks 4 – Lester homers as Cubs pound Diamondbacks 16-4
Jon Lester hit his first major league homer and struck out nine to reach 2,000 for his career, helping the Chicago Cubs pound the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-4 on Tuesday night.  Anthony Rizzo went deep twice and Ian Happ and Javier Baez also connected as Chicago kicked off a six-game homestand with its 14th win in 17 games since the All-Star break. Rizzo, Baez and Albert Almora Jr. each drove in three runs, and Kris Bryant and Willson Contreras had two RBI apiece.  The NL Central leaders rapped out 17 hits in their highest-scoring game of the season and stayed 2 ½ games ahead of second-place Milwaukee.

Chicago also purchased infielder/outfielder Nicky Delmonico’s contract from Triple-A Charlotte on Tuesday. Garcia was injured attempting a sliding catch in shallow right field against Toronto on Monday.

NFL – Brady number 1 in merchandise sales
Patriots quarterback Tom Brady ranks No. 1 in merchandise sales in a list compiled by the NFL players union. The list is based on total sales of all officially licensed NFL player merchandise tracking year-to-date results from March 1 to May 31. Cowboys teammates running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott are ranked second and third respectively. Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch is fourth, followed by his former Seahawks teammate, Russell Wilson.

Appeals court won’t review Mateen Cleaves sex assault case
An appeals court says it won’t review a judge’s decision to reinstate sexual assault charges against former Michigan State basketball star Mateen Cleaves. Three Michigan Court of Appeals judges denied Cleaves’ request in an order dated Monday. The case is expected to return to court in Genesee County for trial. Cleaves is accused of assaulting a woman after a charity golf event and a visit to a Flint-area bar in 2015.

NCAA Football – Kelly says strength and conditioning improved at Notre Dame
Coach Brian Kelly and Notre Dame players say improved strength and conditioning was evident during the opening practice, crediting an improved offseason program under new strength coach Matt Balis with having them prepared to bounce back from a disappointing 4-8 season. The Irish opened practice at Culver Academies, 35 miles south of campus.

NBA – Pacers resume overhaul; waive center Kevin Seraphin
The Indiana Pacers have made another move in their offseason overhaul by waiving center Kevin Seraphin. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in 49 games in his only season with Indiana. Only six players and two starters remain from the Pacers’ playoff roster. Indiana began its rebuilding project in earnest after agreeing to trade four-time All-Star Paul George to Oklahoma on June 30. The Pacers lost two players in free agency, declined the team option on another and waived four sparingly used players.

NHL – Granlund OK’s extension
The Minnesota Wild have worked out a three-year, $17.25 million contract with forward and team leading scorer Mikael Granlund.  The 25-year-old Granlund set career highs with 26 goals, 43 assists and 69 points last season, his fifth in the NHL. He registered 17 points while establishing a club mark with a 12-game point streak last winter.

Middle school named for Lombardi cancels football season
The upcoming football season at a Green Bay middle school named for legendary Packers coach Vince Lombardi has been canceled because the school can’t find any coaches. WLUK-TV reports that administrators at Lombardi Middle School have been advertising for coaches since last April and have not had a single application. Efforts by the high school coaching staff to help fill the positions have come up empty. The school district’s website says a middle school coaching job pays $2,149 a season. Principal Jim Van Abel says in a letter to parents there will be opportunities for students to play with area club football teams. Lombardi Middle School student Alex Coniff says he’s happy that he can still play football, but was looking forward to suiting up for his school this season.

Olympics – US team HQ to be based at Tokyo American Club in 2020
The U.S. Olympic team headquarters will be based at the Tokyo American Club during the 2020 Games. “It’s my great pleasure and honor to announce that in 2020, Tokyo American Club will be the home of USA House in Tokyo,” U.S. Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun told a news conference at the club Wednesday. Founded in 1928, the Tokyo American Club is located a short distance from the U.S. Embassy, Tokyo Tower and the Roppongi entertainment district. The current facility opened in 2011. During the 2020 Games, USA House will serve as a gathering place for U.S. athletes, families, sponsors and past Olympic legends.  “We like to have a place that has an American look and an American feel where we can come and support our team,” Blackmun said. “It’s excellent in every respect. It’s a great facility in a great location.” Previous USA Houses have included Collegio de Sao Paolo in Rio and the Royal College of Art in London.
