You can count some Michigan craft breweries as among the voices calling for the closure of Enbridge’s Line 5 through the Straits of Mackinac. Rich Bergmann, owner of Lake Charlevoix Brewing Company, tells WSJM News there are safer ways to transport oil than an underwater pipeline.

“A 65 year old pipeline sitting not underground but sitting right on the surface of the bottom in one of the most critical areas of the Great Lakes is not a good business strategy,” Bergmann said. “It’s fraught with risk, and the risk is to the Michigan citizens and not to Enbridge.”

Cherry Republic Brewing has also expressed concerns about Line 5, as well as Hop Cat brew pub. The breweries say Michigan’s tourism industry, in general, would be devastated if there were to be a large oil spill in the Great Lakes. They’re supporting the Oil and Water Don’t Mix campaign, which aims to bring about the closure of the oil line.
