Congressman Fred Upton is hailing the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee for advancing some legislation designed to keep autonomous vehicles safe. The PAVE Act expands the existing authority for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to evaluate exemptions from federal motor vehicle safety standards only if there’s no reduction in safety. It also increases the number of vehicles for which exemptions may be granted to help promote the development of new safety features. Upton’s office says these exemptions are critical to the development of self-driving car technology because the allow the industry to innovate and collect information. It also says the PAVE Act maintains the government’s ability to recall self-driving vehicles for safety reasons. Congressman Upton tells us self-driving cars will play a critical role in Michigan’s economy moving forward, and it’s essential there are guidelines in place for them.
