MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
Kansas City Royals 3, Detroit Tigers 1
Chicago Cubs 7, Chicago White Sox 2

Royals 3, Tigers 1 – Royals beat Tigers 3-1 for 7th straight victory
Whit Merrifield homered on the first pitch of the game, and the Kansas City Royals led the rest of the way, beating the Detroit Tigers 3-1 on Tuesday night for their seventh consecutive victory.  Merrifield homered to left-center off Michael Fulmer (10-8) to open the scoring, and the Royals added two runs in the fourth. Danny Duffy (7-6) allowed a run and six hits in 6 1/3 innings. Three relievers finished for Kansas City, with Kelvin Herrera pitching a perfect ninth for his 21st save in 24 chances.  The Royals scored eight runs — five earned — off Fulmer in his previous start last week.

Cubs 7, White Sox 2 – Contreras homers again as Cubs beat White Sox 7-2
Willson Contreras drove in four runs and Carl Edwards Jr. provided some timely relief, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Tuesday. Ben Zobrist reached four times from the leadoff spot as the Cubs won for the ninth time in 11 games since the All-Star break. John Lackey (7-9) became the first major leaguer to hit four batters in two years, but managed to get into the sixth inning for his second straight victory. The last-place White Sox were unable to overcome a strange performance by Carlos Rodon (1-4) in their 10th loss in 11 games. The left-hander matched a career high with 11 strikeouts and smacked a two-run double for his first career hit, but lasted just four innings in his third straight loss.

MLB – Detroit’s Comerica Park offers entry using fingerprint scans
A new program will allow baseball fans at Tigers games in Detroit to get into the ballpark by using fingerprints to verify their identity. The biometrics scanning system from CLEAR is making its debut this week at Comerica Park. Visitors may enroll using a state-issued driver’s license.  Fans will still go through security and display their tickets. Ballpark officials say, however, those willing to have their fingers scanned for fingerprints will have access to shorter lines. The entry system is billed as an added layer of security at the stadium. The ballpark can use the scanned information to track who is entering the park and at what times. In the future, game tickets could be linked to fingerprints. Several other sports venues around the U.S. already offer the fingerprint scanning system.

NFL – Detroit punter Martin has injured ankle
The Detroit Lions have put punter Sam Martin on the active/non-football injury list after he hurt his ankle earlier this month. The Lions announced the move Tuesday, saying Martin was injured while away from the team’s practice facility. The team says he’ll miss time during the preseason. Martin has played the past four seasons for the Lions. He averaged a career-high 48.5 yards per punt in 2016. Joining Martin on the active/NFI list for the Lions are tackle Cyrus Kouandjio and rookie cornerback Teez Tabor. Detroit has put six players on the physically unable to perform list: defensive end Armonty Bryant, safety Don Carey, tackle Taylor Decker, safety Rolan Milligan, tackle Corey Robinson and defensive end Jeremiah Valoaga.

NFL – Report says brain disease rampant among football players
Research on 202 former football players found evidence of a brain disease in almost 90 percent of them, from athletes in the NFL down to high school. That includes 110 of 111 brains from former NFL players in the biggest update on chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE. The disease has been linked with repeated head blows, and the results published by the Journal of the American Medical Association confirm that it can happen even in young players.

NBA – Warriors’ Draymond Green sued over alleged assault by couple
Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green has been sued by a couple who claim he and his entourage assaulted them last year in Michigan.  Jermaine Edmondson and Bianca Williams filed the lawsuit seeking unspecified monetary damages on Tuesday in California’s Alameda County. The lawsuit claims Green bumped into them at a bar in East Lansing last summer and that the forward bullied Edmondson and men in his entourage physically assaulted them. It also claims they ran into Green again the next night and that he slapped Edmondson in the face. Green did not immediately respond to a text message seeking comment.  Green last year paid $560 for a noise violation in a deal that got rid of a misdemeanor assault-and-battery charge filed in the case.

NBA – Curry, Warriors finalize deal
Golden State Warriors guard and two-time MVP Stephen Curry has signed his five-year, $201 million package. Curry will earn just over $40 million per season after getting $12 million while helping the Warriors win the NBA championship this year. NBA Finals MVP Kevin Durant also signed his new contract worth approximately $53 million over the next two years.

NCAA Football – Big Ten Media Day

  • Michigan/Harbaught
    • Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh took his Wolverines to Rome and called the trip "the best thing I’ve ever done personally as a part of a football team." That kind of bonding experience will have to pay dividends if the Big Ten’s youngest squad _ which lost more starters than any team in the country _ is going to develop in time to challenge rivals Ohio State and Penn State.
  • Officials will push back
    • Big Ten officials are promising to push back against coaches who treat the sideline like a stage. Too many times last season, arguments with refs brought out the Hamlet in too many coaches. Bill Carollo, the conference’s coordinator of officials, says enough is enough. "We wouldn’t take a tenth of what some coaches do and say from a player," he said.

WNBA – Chicago Sky moving games from suburbs to new arena in city
The Chicago Sky will start playing at an arena near downtown Chicago for the 2018 season. The WNBA team has been played the last eight years at Allstate Arena in the northern suburb of Rosemont. On Tuesday, the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority voted to approve an agreement to have the Sky play at Wintrust Arena in the South Loop neighborhood, not far from Soldier Field. The five-year agreement includes the Sky playing all 17 home games at Wintrust Arena along with promotional events. The more than 10,000-seat arena is scheduled to open in September. Other tenants include the DePaul University men’s and women’s basketball teams.
