MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
Kansas City Royals 5, Detroit Tigers 3 – 12 Innings
Chicago White Sox 3, Chicago Cubs 1

Royals 5, Tigers 3 – Perez, Moustakas homer in 12th, Royals beat Tigers 5-3
Salvador Perez and Mike Moustakas hit consecutive homers in the 12th inning, and the Kansas City Royals won their sixth straight game, 5-3 over the Detroit Tigers on Monday night. Hours after the Royals helped their pitching staff by acquiring Trevor Cahill and two relievers in a trade with San Diego, Kansas City outlasted the Tigers to stay 1 1/2 games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central. Jorge Bonifacio also homered for the Royals, who won despite squandering a 3-0 lead in the sixth.  Jakob Junis (3-2), one of seven relievers used by Kansas City, pitched a hitless 11th for the win. Kelvin Herrera finished for his 20th save in 23 chances. Drew VerHagen (0-1) took the loss, allowing the homers to Perez and Moustakas in his third inning of work.

White Sox 3, Cubs 1 – White Sox end 9-game slide with 3-1 win over Cubs
Adam Engel and Matt Davidson homered and the White Sox snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the crosstown rival Cubs at Wrigley Field on Monday.  The Cubs lost for just the second time in 10 games following the All-Star break to fall a half-game behind idle first-place Milwaukee in the NL Central.  Engel lined his third homer of the season off reliever Justin Grimm (1-1) into the wind and several rows into the left-center bleachers to snap a 1-1 tie in the sixth. Davidson led off the eighth with his 19th homer, which sailed over the left-field stands and onto Waveland Avenue.  Miguel Gonzalez (5-9) allowed one run and seven hits in 7 1/3 innings to end a four-game losing streak and win for just the second time in 11 decisions. Jose Abreu had two hits and doubled in a run for the AL-worst White Sox, who ended their longest slide in four years.

NBA – Rose signs with Cavaliers
Free agent Derrick Rose agreed Monday to sign with Cleveland. That’s according to a person familiar with the decision.  The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the signing, said that Rose, a former NBA MVP who has battled knee injuries, will get a one-year contract at the veteran’s minimum of $2.1 million.   The deal is expected to be finalized and announced Tuesday.  Rose played for the New York Knicks last season and averaged 18 points and 4.4 assists. The 28-year-old’s role with the Cavs is still to be determined. He could be used as a backup or even start depending on what the team does with All-Star Kyrie Irving, who recently asked for a trade.

NBA – Cavaliers name Koby Altman full-time general manager
The Cavaliers have named Koby Altman their full-time general manager. Altman’s promotion had been expected for days and was made official on Monday. The 34-year-old has been serving as Cleveland’s interim GM this summer after David Griffin parted ways with the club following the NBA Finals. Altman has been with the club since 2012. He will be the fifth GM for owner Dan
Gilbert since 2005.  Gilbert said he’s been impressed with the job Altman has done over the past five weeks.  Altman is taking charge during an interesting juncture for the Cavs. All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving recently asked to be traded and LeBron James is heading into his final season under contract.

NFL – Luck won’t practice yet
Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will be placed on the physically unable to perform list when the team opens training camp on Saturday. Luck had surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in his right shoulder and only began throwing last week. It’s still unclear when he will be cleared to practice, but general manager Chris Ballard says he is hopeful that Luck will be activated before the Sept. 10 season opener in Los Angeles against the Rams.

Gilbert: `We screwed up’ on Detroit display ad
A billionaire businessman has apologized for his real estate company’s controversial sign in downtown Detroit that says “See Detroit Like We Do” with an image of a majority white crowd.  Quicken Loans Founder and Cleveland Cavaliers majority owner Dan Gilbert posted on Facebook Sunday, saying the ad was “tone deaf” and his Bedrock company “screwed up badly.” The ad posted on a residential high-rise during the weekend of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit riots resulted in a social media uproar. The campaign’s photograph contradicted 2010 U.S. Census data indicating the city is more than 82 percent black. Gilbert says the display posted Friday was only part of the final ad, but still distorted the company’s message. He says the image was removed Saturday and the campaign has been “killed.”

NCAA Football – Big Ten Media Day

  • Ohio State/Meyer
    • Urban Meyer looks like the CEO of a Fortune 500 juggernaut for good reason. After five seasons in Columbus, he’s built another college football dynasty, having won a third national championship, a conference championship and two division titles. Just like Kentucky’s basketball program, the Buckeyes don’t rebuild, they just reload.
  • Meyer says Big Ten hasn’t closed the gap with SEC
    • Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn’t just believe the Big Ten has closed the gap with the more heralded Southeastern Conference. He is convinced the race is a dead heat already. The SEC dominated the Big Ten the last two seasons, when it won six of the eight meetings between them. Meyer says he no longer sees disrespect for the Big Ten when it comes to recruiting.
  • Big Ten has new TV deals
    • The Big Ten conference will triple its primetime national TV exposure during the football season thanks to new deals announced with broadcast partners FOX, ESPN and CBS. The conference’s own network will also expand coverage, adding new personalities and feature a 10-year anniversary package.
  • Preseason Big Ten All conference
    • Ohio State, Penn State, Northwestern and Wisconsin each placed two players on the preseason Big Ten all-conference list chosen by a media panel. Buckeyes quarterback J.T. Barrett and defensive end Tyquan Lewis were joined on the East Division team by Penn State running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Trace McSorley.
  • Dantonio/Michigan State
    • Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio says his Spartans will "re-establish" themselves coming off the toughest season of his tenure in East Lansing. The team was rocked by the tragic loss of punter Mike Sadler and beset by disciplinary issues, stumbling to a 3-9 finish after three conference titles and six straight winning seasons.
  • Ferentz/Iowa
    • Kirk Ferentz enters his 19th season as Iowa as the longest tenured Bowl Subdivision coach in the country. He says he is thankful he wound up at Iowa as an assistant in 1981. The Hawkeyes are coming off an 8-5 season and Ferentz has promoted his son, Brian, to run the offense. Former coordinator Ken O’Keefe is back as the quarterbacks coach in hopes of sparking what has been a lackluster offense.
