Tigers 5, Indians 3 – All-Star Fulmer outshines Kluber as Tigers top Indians 5-3
Michael Fulmer outpitched All-Star teammate Corey Kluber and Alex Presley hit a tiebreaking, two-run double and the Detroit Tigers hung on late to salvage the series finale with a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday night. Fulmer (9-6) dominated Cleveland’s lineup until the seventh, when he gave up a two-run homer to Indians All-Star Jose Ramirez. Detroit’s shaky bullpen barely held together over the last three innings. Shane Green worked out of a bases-loaded threat in the seventh and Justin Wilson did the same in the eighth while getting five outs for his 10th save in 11 tries. Fulmer won’t pitch for the AL in Miami on Tuesday night, so he made the most of a nationally televised matchup against Kluber by beating the Central-leading Indians.  Presley ripped his double just inside the left-field chalk in the sixth off Dan Otero after the Tigers loaded the bases against reliever Nick Goody (1-1).

Rockies 10, White Sox 0 – Freeland loses no-hit bid in 9th, Rockies top White Sox 10-0
Hometown rookie Kyle Freeland came within two outs of the first no-hitter by a Rockies pitcher at Coors Field before surrendering a sharp single to Melky Cabrera as Colorado beat the Chicago White Sox 10-0 on Sunday. Freeland, who’s from Denver and grew up going to games at the hitter-friendly park, struck out the first batter of the ninth inning and then allowed Cabrera’s hit to left field on a 2-2 count. The 24-year-old Freeland (9-7) threw 126 pitches. He was pulled immediately after the hit and left to a standing ovation.  The lefty struck out a career-high nine, walked three and hit a batter. Freeland was trying to throw the second no-hitter in Coors Field history. Hideo Nomo accomplished the feat in 1996 when he was with the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The only no-hitter in Rockies history was thrown by Ubaldo Jimenez in 2010 at Atlanta. Edinson Volquez of the Miami Marlins pitched the lone no-hitter in the majors this season, doing it last month against Arizona.

Pirates 14, Cubs 3 – Pirates score 10 in 1st, beat Cubs 14-3
Francisco Cervelli and Andrew McCutchen capped Pittsburgh’s 10-run first inning with consecutive homers off Jon Lester, helping the Pirates pound the Chicago Cubs 14-3 on Sunday. Cervelli drove in five runs and Jordy Mercer had two hits and three RBIs as the Pirates closed out a 5-2 road trip with their fifth win in six games. All-Star Josh Harrison homered in the ninth and Chad Kuhl pitched three innings of one-run ball in an emergency start after Jameson Taillon was scratched due to flu-like symptoms. Pittsburgh sent 15 batters to the plate in its highest-scoring inning since it got 10 in the seventh against Colorado on May 17, 2009. It was the first time it scored at least 10 in the first inning since June 8, 1989, against Philadelphia. Cervelli hit his third career grand slam into the basket in left with two out. McCutchen followed with a drive to left-center for his 17th homer, chasing Lester and drawing a smattering of boos from a frustrated crowd of 41,604 at Wrigley Field.

NBA – Sixers: No. 1 overall pick Fultz done for summer with sprain
No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz will miss the rest of the NBA summer league because of a sprained left ankle. The Philadelphia 76ers say Fultz is expected to return to basketball activities in one to two weeks. Fultz tweeted Sunday: “I’m ok, thank you for all who where worried!” Fultz appeared to roll his ankle in Saturday night’s game and was helped to the locker room by two teammates. He had just signed his contract earlier in the day and was taken for X-rays. The former Washington star had eight points in 15 minutes. It was the last thing the Sixers wanted to see just when they appeared ready to put years of misery behind them. They have dealt with significant injuries to center Joel Embiid and last year’s No. 1 pick, Ben Simmons, over the last three years.  The 76ers pulled off a trade with Boston before the draft to move up from No. 3 to No. 1 to take Fultz, the dynamic scoring point guard that team president Bryan Colangelo felt was the perfect piece to put with Simmons and Embiid.

Golf – PGA – Schauffele gets first win
PGA Tour rookie Xander Schauffele has earned his first victory by rallying to win the Greenbrier Classic by one stroke over Robert Streb. Schauffele closed with a 3-foot birdie putt for a 3-under 67 that left him 14 under for the tournament. He emerged as the winner after Streb and third-round leader Sebastian Munoz dueled for first place most of the final round. Streb came up short on a birdie chip to give Schuffele the win.

Golf – LPGA – Kirk holds off Buhai for first win in 7 years.
Katherine Kirk sank a 10-foot putt for birdie on the final hole to close out a one-stroke victory over Ashleigh Buhai at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic in Wisconsin.  Kirk entered the final round with a four-shot lead over Buhai before shooting a 2-under 70. She finished 22 under in her third LPGA Tour title and first in 152 starts since 2010.

Cycling – Froome retains lead after mountainous Stage 9 sees terrifying high-speed crash
Chris Froome remains the overall leader through the 9th Stage of the Tour de France, 18 seconds ahead of Fabio Aru as he seeks his fourth title in cycling’s biggest event.  Froome’s teammate Geraint Thomas crashed during one of the stage’s early descents and was taken to a local hospital with a suspected broken collarbone. The last descent of the day featured seven climbs and saw a terrifying high-speed crash involving Richie Porte, who had been fifth overall but is now out of the race.

IndyCar – Castroneves wins at Iowa
Helio Castroneves earned his first victory in three years by dominating Sunday’s IndyCar race at Iowa Speedway. The 42-year-old Castroneves led 217 of 300 laps in giving powerhouse Team Penske its first victory on Iowa’s short oval in 11 tries. It was the 30th career win for Castroneves and his first since the Belle Isle doubleheader in June 2014 at Detroit. He had finished second eight times since his last victory. J.R. Hildebrand was a career-best second, followed by Ryan Hunter-Reay, Will Power and Graham Rahal.

Tennis – Wimbledon resumes Monday
It was a day off a Wimbleon. As usual, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray have been playing well, leading the way into Week 2. Not since Lleyton Hewitt won the championship 15 years ago has someone other than those four left Wimbledon with the men’s singles title. Federer has a record-equaling seven titles in that span, Djokovic three), Nadal and Murray have two.  In addition, that so-called Big 4 accounts for eight runner-up finishes during that stretch.

Olympics – IOC balks at helping Rio with $35-40 million Olympic debt
The International Olympic Committee has balked at helping Rio Olympic organizers pay a debt estimated at $35-40 million. The IOC executive board of the, meeting Sunday in Lausanne, Switzerland, says it needs “more detailed information” about the debt after holding talks with the president of the Rio organizing committee. The IOC says it “contributed a record amount to the successful staging of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games,” which the IOC said amounted to $1.53 billion.
