Tigers 6, Giants 2 – Sanchez sharp again for Tigers in 6-2 win over Giants
Anibal Sanchez pitched six strong innings, and Dixon Machado hit his first career home run to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 6-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Thursday. Sanchez (1-0) earned his first victory since Aug. 23, allowing two runs and five hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Sanchez was pitching so poorly this season that he was sent down to Triple-A Toledo, but the 33-year-old right-hander has posted a 3.09 ERA in four starts since returning from the minors. Machado’s first home run came in the 146th at-bat of his career. The 25-year-old infielder hit a two-run shot in the second that put the Tigers up 4-0. Chris Stratton (0-2) allowed five runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings in his first career start.

Brewers 11, Cubs 2 – Braun, 7-run 3rd inning spark Brewers to 11-2 rout of Cubs
Ryan Braun homered to ignite a seven-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 11-2 for their fourth straight victory.  Braun went 1 for 2 with two walks and two RBI before being lifted following the sixth because of the lopsided score. Domingo Santana had four hits and two RBI and Jesus Aguilar added three hits and an RBI.  Milwaukee starter Zach Davies (10-4) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings for the win. Willson Contreras homered for the Cubs, who have not won consecutive games since a three-game winning streak June 18-20. Kyle Schwarber went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in his return following a two-week stint in the minor leagues. Cubs starter Mike Montgomery (1-6) gave up seven runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings.

MLB – Schwarber returns to Cubs, goes 0 for 4 vs. Brewers
Kyle Schwarber returned to the Chicago Cubs following a two-week stint in the minor leagues and started Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, where his offensive struggles continued.  Schwarber, batting fifth and playing in left field, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. The 24-year-old outfielder was hitting .171 with 12 home runs and 28 RBIs in 64 games before being demoted. Schwarber, who missed nearly all of last season with two torn ligaments in his left knee, batted .343 with four homers in 11 games for Triple-A Iowa. “I really just focused on myself and everything about my swing,” he said Thursday before the Cubs’ 11-2 loss. “We’ll see how it goes, but I’m planning on this being me and going out and competing.”  To make room on the roster, right-hander John Lackey was placed on the 10-day disabled list with plantar fasciitis of the right foot.

MLB – Norris goes to the DL
The Tigers have put left-hander Daniel Norris on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left groin. Norris lost his third straight start Wednesday night, allowing five runs in four innings of a 5-4 loss to San Francisco. He’s 4-7 with a 5.29 ERA on the season.

MLB – Mike Moustakas, Justin Turner elected to All-Star teams
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner and Kansas City third baseman Mike Moustakas have been elected to the All-Star Game in online voting for the final initial roster spots.  Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant was second in the NL vote, leaving Cubs reliever Wade Davis as the sole representative of the World Series champions at Tuesday’s game in Miami. Davis did not join the Cubs until the offseason, after Chicago’s first World Series title since 1908.  The last World Series champion with one All-Star was in 2007, when Albert Pujols was the only player from the St. Louis Cardinals.

Tennis – Djokovic and Federer both advance
Second seed Novak Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer have advanced to the third round of Wimbledon by winning in straight sets. Other winners on the men’s side include sixth seed Milos Raonic and No. 8 Dominic Thiem, but Americans Jack Sock and John Isner went down to defeat. Women’s top seed Angelique Kerber won her second-round match in straight sets, as did fifth seed Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova and No. 9 Agnieszka Radwanska.

Tennis – Scary Injury at Wimbledon
A scary moment at Wimbledon. Bethanie Mattek-Sands, a 32-year-old American  eyeing a fourth consecutive Grand Slam doubles title, fell to the grass screaming “help me, help me,” when her right knee buckled during a second-round singles match. It took about 20 minutes before Mattek-Sands was removed on a stretcher. The extent of her injury is not yet known.

NBA – Mavs ink Nowitzki
A person with knowledge of the deal says the Dallas Mavericks and Dirk Nowitzki have agreed on a two-year, $10 million contract that carries a team option in the second season. Nowitzki is now set to join former Lakers great Kobe Bryant as the only players to spend 20 seasons with one NBA franchise. The 7-foot German is also the only foreign-born player with 30,000 career points, a milestone he reached last season.

NBA – Gay signs with Spurs
The Spurs have signed veteran forward Rudy Gay, who averaged 18.7 points last season in Sacramento but played just 30 games before rupturing his left Achilles tendon. Kelly Olynyk has joined the Miami Heat by accepting a deal that ESPN says is worth over $50 million over four years. The Clippers, Hawks and Nuggets have worked out a three-team trade that sends sharp-shooting forward Danilo Gallinari to Los Angeles and brings Jamal Crawford to Atlanta.

Cycling – Tour de France – Without Sagan and Cavendish, Kittel eases to Tour stage win
Marcel Kittel had little trouble winning the sixth stage of the Tour de France in a mass sprint finish Thursday with Peter Sagan and Mark Cavendish both no longer in the race.  Chris Froome held on to the leader’s yellow jersey. It was Kittel’s second victory in this year’s race and 11th overall in his Tour career.

Golf – PGA – Munoz leads, but Love is challenging
Munoz is the early pace-setter at the PGA’s Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. Munoz opened with a 9-under 61 that puts him two strokes ahead of Davis Love I. Munoz has never finished higher than 27th in a PGA event.  Love is looking for his first win since the 2015 Wyndham Championship, which made him the third-oldest winner in PGA Tour history. He would be the oldest if he wins this event.   Defending champion Danny Lee was at 64 along with David Lingmerth, Ben Martin, rookie Xander Schauffele , and Canadians Graham DeLaet and Nick Taylor.

Golf – LPGA – Co-leaders in inaugural LPGA event
Belgian rookie Laura Gonzalez Escallon birdied three of the final four holes for a 7-under 65 and a share of the first-round lead in the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic.  Gonzalez Escallon also made birdies on three of the first four holes to put herself in a tie with Sei Young Kim in the first-year event.  Kim had eight birdies and a bogey to move one shot ahead of Tour rookies Madeleine Sheils and Min-G Kim.
