MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Seattle Mariners 7, Detroit Tigers 5
Minnesota Twins 4, Chicago White Sox 2
San Diego Padres 3, Chicago Cubs 2

Mariners 7, Tigers 5 – Dyson sparks Mariners to a 7-5 comeback win over Tigers
Jarrod Dyson’s bunt single broke up Justin Verlander’s bid for a perfect game in the sixth inning Wednesday night and sparked the Seattle Mariners to a 7-5 comeback win over the Detroit Tigers. Nelson Cruz had three RBIs and Mitch Haniger homered as Seattle overcame a 4-0 deficit with three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Verlander retired his first 16 batters but didn’t make it through the sixth. With one out, the speedy Dyson gave the Mariners their first baserunner, beating out a drag bunt between the mound and first that Verlander was unable to reach.  Mike Zunino walked and Jean Segura, just activated from the disabled list, followed with a broken-bat single to load the bases. Ben Gamel lined a single to make it 4-1. Robinson Cano struck out looking, but Cruz followed with a two-run double to left field, chasing Verlander after 110 pitches.

Twins 4, White Sox 2 – Berrios’ arm, Sano’s bat key Twins over White Sox 4-2
Jose Berrios finished eight innings for a second straight start and Sano homered for the second consecutive game as the Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-2 on Wednesday night behind two of their brightest young stars. After going 3-7 with an unsightly 8.02 ERA in 14 turns as a rookie, Berrios (7-1) has a sparkling 2.67 ERA in eight starts since being recalled from Triple-A.  Berrios struck out eight with just four hits and one walk against him.  Miguel Sano hit his 18th home run, tying the game to start a three-run third inning off a 3-0 fastball from David Holmberg (1-1) with an opposite-field drive to the second deck in right-center . The 24-year-old Sano, on a break from third base to serve as the designated hitter, is third in the AL with 52 RBI.

Padres 3, Cubs 2 – Padres beat Cubs 3-2 on Torrens’ bases-loaded walk
Erick Aybar hit a tying home run in the sixth inning, Luis Torrens walked with the bases loaded against Koji Uehara in the eighth and the San Diego Padres stopped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Cubs 3-2 on Wednesday. Chicago rookie Ian Happ hit a two-run homer in the fourth against reliever Craig Stammen, going deep for the second straight game and third time in four.  Jose Pirella started the comeback with an RBI single in the fifth off Eddie Butler, and Aybar tied the score against Brian Duensing. Uehara (2-4), the fifth of six Cubs relievers, replaced Pedro Strop starting the eighth and allowed singles to Wil Myers leading off and Cory Spangenberg with one out. Erick Aybar was intentionally walked, loading the bases, Matt Szczur fouled out and Torrens took a 3-1 fastball that sailed inside.

MLB – Addison Russell’s wife files for divorce from Cubs player
Addison Russell’s wife has filed for divorce nearly two weeks after the Chicago Cubs shortstop was accused of hitting her. Melisa Reidy-Russell filed the divorce petition in Cook County last week, according to a filing provided by her attorney, Thomas T. Field, on Wednesday. She is seeking full custody of the couple’s young son along with child and other support. Earlier this month, Reidy-Russell posted a photo on her Instagram account with a caption suggesting her husband had been unfaithful to her. In another post, a user _ described by Melisa as a close friend _ made the accusation that Russell had “hit” his wife. Russell has denied the allegation. A statement released by Field’s communications firm said Reidy-Russell “has declined the invitation from Major League Baseball to be interviewed relative to social media postings and allegations of domestic violence.”

NBA – AP source: Cavaliers owner, Billups meeting for 2nd time
A person familiar with the negotiations says Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert is meeting for the second straight day with former NBA star Chauncey Billups about a front-office position. Gilbert could be close to offering a job to Billups, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Wednesday because of the sensitivity of the talks. The Cavaliers are looking for a general manager after Gilbert and David Griffin parted ways this week after three consecutive trips to the Finals. It’s believed that Billups would take on a different role, perhaps as director of basketball operations. Billups has no previous executive experience, but he does have a long-standing relationship with Gilbert and knows the league well. Billups, who was a five-time All-Star, also is close with Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue. Cleveland’s front-office shake-up came days before Thursday’s draft. The Cavaliers currently do not own a pick.

NBA – Wade to return to Chicago
Dwyane Wade has told the Chicago Bulls that he is exercising his $23.8 million option and will remain with them next season, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.  The person spoke on condition of anonymity because neither the Bulls nor Wade had spoken publicly about the matter. Wade had until next week to decide whether to opt in or become a free agent.  Wade averaged 18.3 points last season, his first with the Bulls after 13 years in Miami. He missed 11 games in March with a fractured elbow, but he returned for Chicago’s final three games to help the Bulls make the playoffs.  Wade made $23.2 million this past season. He turns 36 in January.

NBA – 2017 NBA Draft
Markelle Fultz and Lonzo Ball are expected to be the top two picks in the NBA draft. Then the intrigue starts. The Boston Celtics have the No. 3 pick after trading with Philadelphia and will have plenty of options in what’s considered a strong draft. That’s one of the things to watch from Barclays Center, where the record for freshmen taken in the first round could fall.
The Pistons only have one selection with the 12th overall pick.   Detroit traded their 2nd round pick to Utah.  The Bulls have two selections, with number 16 and 38.   The Indiana Pacers also have two selections at number 18 and 47.  The 2017 NBA Draft begins tonight at 8 p.m.

NCAA Hockey – NCAA may limit offside challenges, give officials more power
The NCAA could change its video replay rules in college hockey, giving officials more power and limiting the ability to review an offside play. The men’s and women’s ice hockey rules committee proposed allowing on-ice officials to review goals involving potential offside or too many men on the ice in overtime or the final 10 minutes of a game _ up from the final 2 minutes _ and at any time during the playoffs.  But the committee proposed ending potential offside challenges at the point the defensive team gains possession of the puck.   The playing rules oversight panel must approve any rule changes. That panel is expected to discuss the proposals July 20.

NHL – Knights make their picks
The Vegas Golden Knights now have 30 more players after making their selections in the expansion draft on Wednesday. The biggest name is former No. 1 pick Marc-Andre Fleury, who had won three
Stanley Cups while spending his entire 13-year career with the Penguins. The Knights opened the draft by taking Florida forward Jonathan Marchessault, Dallas forward Cody Eakin and Los Angeles defenseman Brayden McNabb. Marchessault had 30 goals and 51 points for the Panthers last season. Other players taken included Predators forward James Neal, Blues forward David Perron, Wild forward Erik Haula and Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin, Detroit forward Tomas Nosek, and Blackhawks defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk.

NHL – Blackhawks’ Hossa to miss 2017-18 season with skin disorder
Blackhawks winger Marian Hossa will miss the entire 2017-18 NHL season because of a progressive skin disorder. The team announced the news on Wednesday. The 38-year-old veteran says severe side effects associated with medication to treat the skin disorder has made playing hockey next season impossible. Hossa says he has privately been undergoing treatment for the last few years under the supervision of Chicago’s medical staff.  Dr. Michael Terry said the team strongly supports Hossa’s decision not to play and is the appropriate approach to “keep him functional and healthy in the short term and throughout his life.” General manager Stan Bowman calls Hossa’s absence a significant loss. Hossa, a 19-year veteran, has only missed 46 games over the past six seasons. He had 45 points last season.

NHL – Handing out the Hardware
Connor McDavid was the big winner at the NHL awards presentation.  The second-year Edmonton Oilers forward and captain came away with the Hart Trophy as the league MVP, and the Ted Lindsay Award that goes to the most outstanding player chosen in a vote by NHL players association members.  McDavid scored 30 goals and led the league with 70 assists and 100 points to help Edmonton make its first playoff appearance since 2006.
