Minnesota Twins 9, Chicago White Sox 7
Chicago Cubs 4, San Diego Padres 0

Mariners 5, Tigers 4 – F/10 – Seager’s double lifts Mariners over Tigers 5-4 in 10 innings
Kyle Seager’s double off the wall in right field scored Tyler Smith from second base with the winning run and gave the Seattle Mariners a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings Tuesday night.  Seager’s game-winning hit came on a night when his brother, Corey, hit three home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was Seattle’s fourth walk-off win this season and it came after the Mariners missed chances with runners in scoring position in the eighth and ninth.  Nelson Cruz walked on a 3-2 pitch from Justin Wilson (3-3) to open the 10th. Smith came on as a pinch runner and reached second with no outs on a wild pitch. Seager then turned on a fastball and lined it over the head of right fielder J.D. Martinez, allowing Smith to score easily.  Steve Cishek (1-1) pitched the top of the 10th to get the win.

Twins 9, White Sox 7 – Sano, Vargas power Twins to 9-7 win over White Sox
Miguel Sano and Kennys Vargas each hit a long home run to help the Minnesota Twins bounce back from a demoralizing sweep by beating the Chicago White Sox 9-7 on Tuesday night.  Sano hit his 17th homer and Vargas added a three-run shot as the Twins overcame a rough outing from Ervin Santana (9-4), who gave up six runs on 10 hits and struck out six in five innings. Brandon Kintzler pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 21 tries.  Jose Abreu went 4 for 5 with a home run and two doubles, and Avisail Garcia had a homer and two RBIs for the White Sox. Derek Holland (5-7) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings for Chicago.

Cubs 4, Padres 0 – Rizzo hits leadoff HR, Cubs beat Padres 4-0
New leadoff hitter Anthony Rizzo had another first-inning homer Monday night in the Chicago Cubs 4-0 victory over the San Diego Padres.  Rizzo’s home run on the second pitch from Jhoulys Chacin (6-6) was the third leading off in seven games since Rizzo was moved to first in the order. In those seven games, he is 6 for 6 with a walk to open the first inning.  It also extended his hitting streak to a career-high 14 games.  Rizzo’s home run was his 17th of the season. Rookie Ian Happ added his ninth in the eighth inning for the Cubs, who won their third straight.  Mike Montgomery (1-3) allowed three hits and two walks in six innings, striking out four. Twelve of his other 14 outs came on ground balls.

NFL – Lions’ Thornton suspended 6 games for 2017 season
Detroit Lions defensive tackle Khyri Thornton has been suspended for the first six games of the 2017 season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Thornton can return to the active roster on Oct. 16, at the start of a bye week, and will be eligible to play Oct. 29 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is permitted to practice with the Lions during training camp and is eligible to play in preseason games. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Thornton has played in 19 games the previous two seasons with the Lions, starting six games last season. He seemed to be headed for a backup role this season behind defensive tackles Haloti Ngata and A’Shawn Robinson.

NCAAFB – Former Notre Dame QB Zaire says he’s going to Florida
Former Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire has announced on Instagram that he’s going to Florida. According to a person familiar with Zaire’s transfer, the left-hander has been accepted into graduate school at Florida and is expected to attend classes next week. He was a backup for the Irish last year after missing most of the 2015 season because of a broken ankle. Florida officials can’t comment on prospective student-athletes until they enroll in school and attend class.

NBA/NHL – Judge denies request to block funding tied to Detroit arena
A federal judge has denied a request to block some public funding for Little Caesars Arena and the Detroit Pistons’ move from the suburbs. U.S. District Court Judge Mark Goldsmith issued his decision late Monday, saying a requested injunction would cause “catastrophic damage” to Detroit.  The lawsuit says Michigan law prohibits spending school property tax revenue on the projects because a tax voters approved in 2012 was to be used exclusively for Detroit’s public schools. It said a vote from city residents was needed first. Activist Robert Davis and D. Etta Wilcoxon, who is running for City Clerk, had sought to block the Detroit Downtown Development Authority from using the money. The arena, which will be home to the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings and the NBA’s Pistons, opens this fall.

NBA – Howard on the move again
Dwight Howard appears to be on the move again, this time to the Charlotte Hornets. A person familiar with the situation says the Charlotte Hornets have reached an agreement to acquire the center from the Hawks, along with the 31st overall pick in Thursday’s draft for center Miles Plumlee, shooting guard Marco Belinelli and the 41st pick. Howard signed a three-year, $70.5 million deal with Atlanta last summer after three seasons with Houston.

NBA – Wade reportedly will return to Chicago
A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Dwyane Wade has told the Chicago Bulls that he is exercising his $23.8 million option for next season. Wade averaged 18.3 points on 43 percent shooting last season, his first with the Bulls after 13 years in Miami.

NBA – Lakers trade Russel
Three people with knowledge of the deal say the Los Angeles Lakers have agreed to trade point guard D’Angelo Russell and high-priced center Timofey Mozgov to the Brooklyn Nets. The Lakers would receive Brook Lopez and the 27th overall pick in the upcoming draft. Russell averaged 15.6 points and 4.8 assists last year, his second NBA season.

Golf – Agent: Woods in clinic for pain medications
Tiger Woods has checked into a clinic to get help for dealing with pain medication. His agent wouldn’t disclose the location of the in-patient facility, nor did he say how long Woods will be there. Woods said Monday night that he is receiving professional help to manage his medications and how he deals with pain and a sleep disorder. The treatment comes less than a month after his arrest in Jupiter, Florida, on a DUI charge that involved a combination of prescription medications. Woods says his arrest stemmed from a reaction to the medicine.

Golf – PGA Tour to blood-test next season
The PGA Tour is beefing up its anti-doping policy. The tour will add blood testing next season and bring its list of banned substances in line with the World Anti-Doping Association.  Blood testing will allow the tour to detect any use of human growth hormone, which is on the list of banned substances but cannot be detected through urine.  The revised policy takes effect in October, the start of next season.
