NBA – 2017 NBA Finals – (best of 7) – Game 5
Last Night
Golden State Warriors 129, Cleveland Cavaliers 120                            (GSW wins 4-1)

Warriors 129, Cavaliers 120 – Warriors take series for 2nd title in 3 years
The Golden State Warriors brought Kevin Durant to the Bay Area last summer for the express purpose of winning an NBA title and erasing the memory of last year’s collapse against Cleveland in the finals. Mission accomplished. Durant pumped in 39 points and the Warriors won their second championship in three seasons by taking Game 5 of the finals, 129-120 over the Cavaliers. The All-Star forward shot 14-for-20 from the field, including 5-for-8 from 3-point range in helping Golden State close out its third title since the franchise moved from Philadelphia in 1962. Durant was named MVP of the finals, 10 years after being taken second overall in the NBA draft. Warriors guard Stephen Curry shot just 2-for-9 from beyond the arc but finished with 34 points and a team-high 10 assists.  LeBron James had 41 points in the loss.  James is 3-5 in the NBA Finals.

MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Chicago White Sox 10, Baltimore Orioles 7
New York Mets 6, Chicago Cubs 1
Tigers were off

White Sox 10, Orioles 7 – Smith, Garcia power White Sox past Orioles 10-7
Kevan Smith hit his first career home run, Avisail Garcia celebrated his 26th birthday with three RBI and the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 10-7 on Monday night. The White Sox opened a four-game series on a strong note after dropping nine of 11 and handed the Orioles their fifth straight loss. Smith set the tone with a two-run drive in the second against Wade Miley (2-4) and finished with a career-best three RBI.  Garcia added an RBI double in a four-run third and drove in two more with a single in the fourth to give Chicago an 8-2 lead. Matt Davidson had an RBI single and solo homer. Jake Petricka (1-0) pitched one-hit ball over 2 1/3 innings after Mike Pelfrey struggled, and the White Sox picked up the win after a 2-7 road trip.

Mets 6, Cubs 1 – DeGrom, Cabrera lead Mets over Cubs 6-1 for 4th straight win
Jacob deGrom pitched a five-hitter, Asdrubal Cabrera lined two home runs and turned four double plays, and the Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 6-1 Monday night. DeGrom (5-3) threw the Mets’ first complete game of the season, Jay Bruce also homered and New York won its fourth in a row. Still under .500 but getting healthier, the Mets started a key two-week stretch where they face 14 straight games against teams that reached the NL playoffs last year.  The Cubs dropped to 31-32 with their ninth straight road loss — the World Series champions haven’t won away from Wrigley Field in a month during their worst road skid since 2012.

MLB – 2017 MLB Draft – Twins take shortstop at No. 1
The Major League Baseball draft has begun with Minnesota’s selection of California high school shortstop Royce Lewis with the No. 1 pick.  The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Lewis hit .377 with four homers and 25 stolen bases for JSerra Catholic High School. Lewis was a standout on USA Baseball’s gold medal-winning Under-18 team at the Pan American Championships last year.  Cincinnati used the second selection to take California high school right-hander Hunter Greene, one of the top two-way talents in a draft full of them. San Diego selected North Carolina high school left-hander MacKenzie Gore with the third choice.  The White Sox took Missouri State 3B Jake Burger with the 11th pick, The Tigers with the 18th pick selected Florida RHP Alex Faedo.  The Cubs had two late first round picks, with the 27th pick the Cubs took LHP Brendon Little from the State College of Florida-Manatee, and the 30th pick was RHP Alex Lange from LSU.

NHL – Wings/Pistons new arena is the best of everything
Olympia Entertainment President Tom Wilson traveled throughout North America, visiting NHL arenas to take the best from the rest. He also took a look at how the roof of a hockey arena in Russia during the 2014 Winter Olympics was lit up with cool displays. Just three months before Kid Rock becomes the first star to perform in the centerpiece of a 50-block development, Wilson touted the facility that the Detroit Red Wings and Pistons will share next season.

NHL – Celebration for Penguins coming Wednesday
The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Stanley Cup championship victory parade will be held Wednesday morning. This year’s parade will continue into Point State Park, where the players, coaches and other dignitaries will take the stage to deliver remarks. The parade after last year’s championship drew about 400,000 fans, the biggest celebration for any of the team’s four previous Stanley Cup championships. The Penguins beat the Nashville Predators 2-0 in Game 6 of the final on Sunday to become the NHL’s first repeat champions since the 1998 Red Wings.

NHL – Panthers hire Bob Boughner as head coach
Bob Bougner is the new head coach of the Florida Panthers, the 15th in the team’s 24-year history.  He spent the last two years as an assistant coach under former Panthers coach Peter DeBoer in San Jose. Boughner’s only previous experience head coaching experience came in the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.

NCAAMBB – Butler hires a hoops coach
A person with knowledge of the decision says LaVall Jordan has agreed to become Butler’s next men’s basketball coach. Jordan replaces Chris Holtmann, who accepted the Ohio State job last week. Jordan went 11-24 in his only season at Milwaukee but led the Panthers to the Horizon League championship game.

NCAAMBB – Big Ten – OSU AD: Holtmann was top choice
Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said Butler coach Chris Holtmann was his top choice to take over as basketball coach after Thad Matta was fired. Holtmann was offered the job one day after Matta’s firing was announced. But he didn’t accept until two days later after Smith agreed to bump the contract to eight years at about $3 million per year.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Iowa will have logo at midfield for the first time in decades
Iowa will have a logo displayed at midfield in Kinnick Stadium next season for the first time in nearly four decades. The Hawkeyes say the field it is putting in for the 2017-18 season will have the "Tigerhawk" logo, the same one that adorns Iowa’s helmets, between the 45-yard lines. Iowa has never had that logo, which it created in 1979, at midfield before. The Hawkeyes used a block "I" from 1972-80, but they’ve left midfield blank ever since.
