Some testing on Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac over the weekend is being praised by Congressman Fred Upton. He tells WSJM News legislation requiring underwater pipeline tests which he helped to pass in 2016 led to the Line 5 activity. More tests are coming.

“The first step was to pressurize that line,” Upton said. “It passed, which is a good thing, but it’s something we’re going to continue to watch and monitor because we know that we cannot afford a break in this pipeline that connects the two peninsulas.”

Upton tells us they’ll next be inspecting the pipeline from the inside to verify its welds are secure. He says a break in Line 5 would be disastrous for the Great Lakes.
