State House Approves Ban On FGM

Legislation outlawing female genital mutilation and allowing victims to receive significant civil damages is headed to the Michigan Senate. That’s following overwhelming approval by the House this week. Representative Beth Griffin of Mattawan tells WSJM News she’s glad they’ve taken action.

“Frankly, I think it’s sad that in this day and age in America, we have to deal with this,” Griffin said. “Thankfully, the Republicans and the Democrats stood together and said, ‘No. This is not right. This is a human rights issue.’”

The bipartisan bills, passed yesterday, were crafted after two Minnesota girls were brought to Livonia by their families to have the procedure done. Three people, including two doctors, are awaiting trial in that case.
