The latest higher education budget from the Michigan Legislature includes a 2% funding boost for the state’s 15 public universities. State Senator Tonya Schuitmaker tells WSJM News it also includes a cap on how much each school can raise its tuition if it wants its full funding raise. They’ve been doing that for seven years now.

“It’s been over about 90 times,” Schuitmaker said. “If you take all seven years plus 15 public universities and all of the universities, with the exception of three times, have stayed within the tuition cap. So, I’d say that’s pretty good results.”

The budget approved this week also includes a 15% increase in student financial aid. 28 community colleges would see an overall 1% funding boost under another bill approved Tuesday.
