MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Kansas City Royals 1, Detroit Tigers 0
Boston Red Sox 13, Chicago White Sox 7
San Diego Padres 6, Chicago Cubs 2

Royals 1, Tigers 0 – Skoglund wins big league debut, beats Verlander, Tigers 1-0
Eric Skoglund pitched 6 1/3 innings of two-hit ball in his major league debut, helping the Kansas City Royals beat Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers 1-0 on Tuesday night. Skoglund, a 2014 third-round draft pick out of Central Florida, struck out five and walked one. The left-hander was promoted from Triple-A Omaha when the Royals placed Danny Duffy on the disabled list Monday with an oblique strain. Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his 12th save in 14 opportunities.     Verlander (4-4) left after seven innings, allowing one run and six hits.

Red Sox 13, White Sox 7 – Sale struggles, but Marrero hits 2 HRs to lift Red Sox
Chris Sale made a shaky return to his former home, but Deven Marrero hit two of Boston’s season-high six home runs and the Red Sox beat the Chicago White Sox 13-7 on Tuesday night. Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Mitch Moreland also went deep. The Red Sox won for the seventh time in nine games after an anticipated duel between aces never materialized. Sale (6-2) got a warm reception from the crowd and a rude welcome from his old team. The five-time All-Star gave up six runs and 10 hits _ both season highs _ over five innings in his first appearance against the White Sox. Marrero drove in five runs and doubled his career home run total. After hitting two in his first 59 major league games, he went back-to-back with Betts in a four-run second inning and chased Jose Quintana (2-7) with a three-run drive in the third that made it 7-3.  Craig Kimbrel worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Padres 6, Cubs 2 – Hedges, Lamet help Padres hand Cubs 5th straight loss
Austin Hedges had a home run and four RBIs, rookie Dinelson Lamet produced another strong outing and the San Diego Padres beat the Cubs 6-2 on Tuesday night, giving Chicago its fifth straight loss. Hedges hit a two-run homer and a two-run double as the Padres clinched the three-game series against the struggling Cubs. Lamet (2-0), one of Padres’ top prospects, was making his Petco Park debut and looking to build on his stellar first start. Against the New York Mets on Thursday, the right-hander threw five innings of one-run ball, allowing three hits. He was nearly as good against the world champion Cubs, limiting them to two runs, five hits and a walk over five innings. For the second straight start, he struck out eight. Eddie Butler (2-1) was seeking his third straight win, but he lasted only 4 1/3 innings, charged with six runs and seven hits. He walked three and struck out five.

MLB – Robert’s $26M signing bonus from ChiSox spread over 3 years
Cuban prospect Luis Robert’s signing bonus will be spread out over three years. Chicago finalized a minor league contract with the 19-year-old outfielder on Saturday, a deal that includes a $26 million signing bonus and will cost the White Sox an additional $25,243,200 in tax for exceeding their international bonus pool.  Robert receives $10 million within 30 days’ approval of the commissioner’s office and $2.5 million on Dec. 20. He gets $2 million each on July 1 in 2018 and 2019, and $2 million each on Dec. 20 in 2018 and 2019. A final $4.5 million payment is due on July 1, 2020. Chicago must pay a 100 percent tax on the amount of bonuses exceeding $3,729,800, not including bonuses of $10,000 or under. As part of baseball’s new labor contract, in the signing period that starts July 2 Chicago’s bonuses will be capped at $4.75 million, not including bonuses of $10,000 or less. In addition, the White Sox may not give an international amateur a signing bonus of more than $300,000 for the next two signing periods.

NHL – 2017 Stanley Cup Finals (best of 7) – Game 2

NHL – Catfish tosser says he was ‘dumb redneck with a bad idea’
A Tennessee man is calling himself a "dumb redneck with a bad idea" after police filed charges against him for throwing a catfish onto the rink in Pittsburgh during the opening of the Stanley Cup Final. Police say 36-year-old Jacob Waddell threw the dead fish over the glass surrounding the rink on Monday night during the Nashville Predators-Pittsburgh Penguins game.  He was ejected and charged with disorderly conduct, possessing instruments of crime and disrupting meetings or processions. Waddell, of Nolensville, told Nashville radio station WGFX-FM that he came up with the idea ahead of a trip to see relatives in Ohio. He said that "like an ignorant redneck, I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be awesome to throw a catfish on the ice at this game?’"  The Penguins won the game 5-3. Game 2 is Wednesday. Hockey has a long tradition of objects being thrown on the ice, usually in affection like when fans toss hats to mark hat tricks. There are odd offerings, too, including the time-honored tradition of Detroit Red Wings fans throwing octopi during the playoffs.

NHL/NCAA Hockey – Bruins sign Notre Dame’s Bjork to 3-year entry-level deal
The Boston Bruins have signed forward Anders Bjork to an entry-level contract.  The team said Tuesday that the three-year deal for the 20-year-old Notre Dame standout is set to begin next season.  Bjork led the Fighting Irish in points as a junior last season with 21 goals and 31 assists — both career highs. It helped Notre Dame reach the Frozen Four for the first time since 2011. For his efforts Bjork was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the NCAA’s top player.  Prior to attending Notre Dame he spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program.  Bjork was selected by Boston in the fifth round of the 2014 NHL draft.

NFL – Bears backup Mark Sanchez injured, out for offseason program
Bears backup quarterback Mark Sanchez will likely miss the rest of Chicago’s offseason program after suffering what the team says is a minor injury on Tuesday. He is expected to be ready for training camp.  The Bears signed Sanchez to a one-year deal in March. He spent last season backing up Dallas’ Dak Prescott.  Earlier in the day, the Bears requested waivers on quarterback Connor Shaw. They rescinded the move after Sanchez was injured.

NFL – Detroit Lions announce signings of Bozick, Asiata
The Detroit Lions have signed guard Connor Bozick and running back Matt Asiata. The team announced the deals Tuesday but did not provide contract terms. Asiata’s agent confirmed last week he had agreed to a one-year deal with the Lions. Bozick was an undrafted free agent out of Delaware, where he made 24 consecutive starts to finish his career. Asiata rushed for 402 yards last season for Minnesota. In five NFL seasons, he has rushed for 1,259 yards on 361 carries.

NCAAFB – Michigan State not renewing Blackwell’s contract
Michigan State is not renewing the contract of football staff employee Curtis Blackwell, who had been suspended with pay. Blackwell’s deal expires Wednesday. University spokesman Jason Cody says coach Mark Dantonio decided to go in a different direction. In February, Cody said Blackwell had been suspended . That confirmation came less than a week after the school announced three football players were suspended as part of a sexual assault investigation, and that a staff member associated with the program was also suspended. The school said it was retaining a law firm to investigate football staffers’ compliance with university policy.  The school did not say whether Blackwell was the staff member suspended because of that situation. Cody says none of the remaining football staff members are currently suspended.

Golf – Police say Woods’ car showed fresh damage
Police say Tiger Woods’ car showed fresh damage on the driver’s side when officers found him asleep at the wheel alongside a Florida road. Incident reports released by Jupiter Police said Woods had trouble keeping his eyes open as he struggled to follow instructions to show his driver’s license, open his window and tie his shoes before he was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
