Legislation designed to encourage young people in Michigan to study STEM subjects has moved forward in the Michigan Senate. State Senator John Proos tells WSJM News the plan would require schools to provide students with the latest regional economic outlook report so they can know which fields are in need of the most workers.

“What we want to do is make sure that kids in schools, starting as early as the seventh grade, begin to think about what kind of jobs are available now and in the future,” Proos said.

The plan from Proos would also require schools to offer special STEM certifications to kids who take extra science, math, and engineering classes. The legislation was approved by the Senate Education Committee Tuesday.
