The OutCenter in Benton Harbor will release the results of a large survey of the nation’s transgendered citizens at a gathering Wednesday morning. OutCenter Director Mary Jo Schnell tells WSJM News they’ve teamed up with Equality Michigan for a conference that will delve into many of the problems transgendered individuals face. A big one is economic.

“High poverty rates within the population, and a lot of this can be attributed to experience with discrimination on the job,” Schnell said. “Even within interviews. Trying to get a position. A major contributor to the high poverty rate is a 19% unemployment rate.”

Schnell tells us many transgendered southwest Michigan residents have to leave for other areas to be able to get a job. Wednesday’s gathering will delve into a variety of other problems as well. We’ll have details after.
