MLB – Major League Baseball
Last Night
Baltimore Orioles 13, Detroit Tigers 11 – 13 Innings
Los Angeles Angels 7, Chicago White Sox – 11 Innings
Chicago Cubs 9, Cincinnati Reds 5

Orioles 13, Tigers 11 – 13 Inn. – Davis homers twice in extra innings, Orioles edge Tigers
Chris Davis homered in the 12th inning and again in the 13th, and the Baltimore Orioles finally held on after the second one, outlasting the Detroit Tigers 13-11 on Tuesday night.  Davis led off the 12th with a home run that started a three-run inning for the Orioles, but Detroit rallied with three of its own in the bottom half to keep the game going. Davis came up again with a runner on third in the 13th and hit a two-run shot off Francisco Rodriguez (1-5) that gave Baltimore the lead for good. The Orioles led 7-1 after scoring seven runs in the third, but they squandered that big advantage and needed Mark Trumbo’s solo shot with two outs in the ninth just to force extra innings. Baltimore snapped a four-game losing streak.  Richard Bleier (1-1) earned his first career win.

Angels 7, White Sox 6 – 11 Inn. – Maybin, Pujols rally Angels past White Sox 7-6 in 11
Cameron Maybin had five hits, including a tying double in the 11th inning, and Albert Pujols singled home the winning run moments later to give the Los Angeles Angels a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. Chicago erased a three-run deficit in the ninth and went ahead 6-5 on Tim Anderson’s solo homer in the top of the 11th off Yusmeiro Petit (1-0). But it was the Angels who pulled off the final comeback. Andrelton Simmons singled leading off the bottom half against closer David Robertson (2-1), and Ben Revere singled with one out. Maybin, batting leadoff for the first time with the Angels, drove a double to left-center that tied it 6-all. After an intentional walk to Mike Trout loaded the bases, Pujols singled to deep center field for his third RBI of the night.

Cubs 9, Reds 5 – Schwarber, Rizzo, Happ homer as Cubs beat Reds 9-5
Slumping sluggers Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber homered, rookie Ian Happ connected again and the Chicago Cubs beat the Cincinnati Reds 9-5 on Tuesday night. Happ hit his second homer in his third major league game and Addison Russell also went deep as Chicago returned to .500 after a lackluster road trip. NL MVP Kris Bryant added two hits in his first appearance after missing three games with an illness. The Cubs (19-19) had dropped seven of nine, including four of their last six at division leaders Colorado and St. Louis. Schwarber’s continued trouble in the leadoff spot and the shaky performance so far by the rotation had created some angst for a fan base expecting more of the same after Chicago’s historic World Series championship last year, but no one seemed a bit worried around the team. Willson Contreras had two hits and two RBIs, and John Lackey (4-3) pitched into the sixth inning in the opener of a 10-game homestand. Joey Votto, Zack Cozart and Tucker Barnhart homered for Cincinnati on a warm and windy night at Wrigley Field. But Bronson Arroyo (3-3) was hit hard in five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits.

MLB – NL MVP Kris Bryant returns to Cubs lineup
Cubs star Kris Bryant is back in the starting lineup after missing three games with an illness. Bryant got the start in right field for the opener of a three-game series against Cincinnati. The NL MVP is batting .299 with seven homers and 18 RBIs in 34 games. Manager Joe Maddon also says outfielder Jon Jay is available, and second baseman Ben Zobrist could have played, but he wants to be cautious with him. Jay and Zobrist have been dealing with back issues. Also Tuesday, outfielder Jason Heyward tested his hand injury with live batting practice on the field. Heyward is on the 10-day disabled list with a sore knuckle on his right hand.

NBA – Detroit Pistons unveil updated logo
The Detroit Pistons have unveiled an updated logo in advance of their move downtown next season.  The team says the logo is the result of a six-month process by the Pistons’ creative team in collaboration with the NBA and Nike. It’s similar to a logo the team used from 1979-96 , with the team’s name written on a red basketball background with a blue ring surrounding the ball.  In recent seasons, the font used for the team name in the logo was larger. The Pistons begin playing in a new downtown arena in 2017-18. The venue will also house the Detroit Red Wings.

Olympics – IOC evaluation commission praises Paris’ historic vision
IOC evaluation commission chairman Patrick Baumann praised Paris’ vision for the Olympics as he wrapped up a three-day visit to the French capital on Tuesday. Baumann, however, stopped short of giving hints on whether the city of lights will host the games in 2024 or four years later. As the International Olympic Committee currently assesses the possibility of awarding Paris and Los Angeles the next two Olympics in September, Baumann said he was impressed by the sense of history at the heart of the French bid. Many Parisian landmarks, including the Grand Palais, the Arc de Triomphe, the Champ de Mars and the Eiffel Tower, will be used if Paris wins. Baumann said the Paris bid “can put sport in the middle of that history.”
