NCAA – NCAA report shows athletes still breaking academic records
College athletes continue to produce record scores in the classroom. The NCAA’s most recent Academic Progress Report shows the four-year average in Division I was 981, two points higher than last year. Scores are calculated by giving each player on each team one point per semester for remaining academically eligible and another point each semester if they remain in school or graduate. A perfect score is 1,000. This year’s numbers cover the 2012-16 academic years. It’s the 12th consecutive record-breaking score. Teams that consistently fall below 930 can face penalties, including postseason ineligibility. Of the 17 teams ineligible to participate in NCAA Tournaments next year, 15 come from historically black colleges and universities.

NFL – AP Source: WR Floyd agrees to sign with hometown Vikings
A person with direct knowledge of the contract tells The Associated Press that wide receiver Michael Floyd has agreed to sign a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Minnesota Vikings. The Minnesota native finished last season with the Super Bowl-champion Patriots. He was cut by Arizona last season after his arrest for drunken driving, an abrupt end to his time with the Cardinals after they drafted him in the first round in 2012.

Wife of ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman dies in crash
The wife of longtime ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman has died in a traffic crash in Connecticut. State police say 67-year-old Katherine Ann Berman, of Cheshire, was one of two victims in the two-vehicle crash at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday in Woodbury. The other victim was 87-year-old Edward Bertulis, of Waterbury.  ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement the death is a "devastating tragedy and difficult to comprehend" and pledged to give Chris Berman "the love and support he will surely need in this hour."  Police say Kathy Berman’s car struck the rear of Bertulis’ SUV and both veered off the road. Berman’s car went down an embankment and overturned in a body of water. Bertulis’ vehicle struck a utility pole and landed on its roof.  ESPN is based in Bristol, Connecticut.

Olympics – LA Olympic organizers putting their plans on display
Los Angeles Olympic organizers are putting their plans on display at a time of uncertainty in the race for the 2024 Games. Members of the International Olympic Committee are in Southern California this week to inspect stadiums and arenas that could become future Olympic Games venues. But as meetings begin Wednesday, there’s a big unknown. Los Angeles and Paris are the only two bidders left for the 2024 Games. The IOC is considering a proposal to award the next two Olympics _ 2024 and 2028 _ one to each city. That decision will be made at a meeting in September.   Like Paris, L.A. says it’s only interested in 2024.
