He gave up three runs, seven hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Robbie Ray (2-3) lost his third straight start. The left-hander allowed five runs, five hits and five walks in five innings. He struck out eight. Although it wasn’t a save situation, new closer Justin Wilson pitched a perfect ninth for the Tigers. Manager Brad Ausmus announced before the game that Wilson would take over closing duties from Francisco Rodriguez after a pair of blown saves over the weekend in Oakland.

Twins 7, White Sox 2 – Santiago beats former team, Twins top White Sox 7-2
Hector Santiago beat his former team once again, Byron Buxton had three hits and the Minnesota Twins rolled over the Chicago White Sox 7-2 on Tuesday night. Santiago (4-1) allowed two runs, three hits and five walks over 6 2/3 innings. He struck out six and dropped his ERA to 2.76. The left-hander is 5-1 with a 1.59 ERA against the White Sox, who drafted him in the 30th round in 2006 and traded him in 2013 to the Los Angeles Angels. Chicago scored twice in the third inning but did not have another hit until two outs in the ninth. Tyler Duffey and Taylor Rogers closed out Minnesota’s four-hitter. Kennys Vargas hit a two-run shot off Mike Pelfrey (0-3) in the fourth inning.

Rockies 10, Cubs 4 – Game 1 – Reynolds, Rockies rough up Cubs 10-4 in opener of DH
Ryan Hanigan hit a two-out, bases-clearing single as part of a six-run third inning, Mark Reynolds homered for a fourth straight game and the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 10-4 on Tuesday in a day-night doubleheader opener. Reynolds also added two RBI singles as every player in the starting lineup, including pitcher Antonio Senzatela, had a hit for the NL West-leading Rockies. Reynolds is batting .533 through four games on this 10-game homestand.  Senzatela (5-1) struggled with his command over six innings but wiggled out of several tough spots. The hard-throwing rookie had three walks and four strikeouts. Jake Arrieta (4-2) was removed after 3 2/3 innings _ his shortest stint as a Cub. He surrendered nine hits and nine runs, but just five were earned.

Cubs 8, Rockies 1 – Game 2 – Lackey strikes out 10, Cubs beat Rockies 8-1 for DH split
John Lackey struck out 10 over seven scoreless innings and added an RBI single , helping the Chicago Cubs stop a four-game skid by beating the Colorado Rockies 8-1 on Tuesday for a day-night doubleheader split.  Chicago gave Lackey plenty of cushion with a five-run second inning. Javier Baez added a two-run homer in the eighth and Kris Bryant a solo shot in the ninth.  Lackey (3-3) allowed just four singles, a sharp contrast to his previous start at Coors, when he surrendered 10 runs on June 8, 2015. Lackey became the second visiting pitcher to throw seven or more shutout innings with 10 or more strikeouts at Coors, according to the Rockies. The other was Pedro Martinez on July 29, 1997, when he went nine innings and struck out 13. Kyle Freeland (3-2) had one bad stretch in the nightcap. He allowed five runs, three earned, and four hits — all in a second inning that was compounded by two errors. The rookie left-hander finished with four walks and six strikeouts over six innings.

MLB – MLB upholds 1-game suspension for Twins Miguel Sano
Major League Baseball has upheld a one-game suspension of Minnesota third baseman Miguel Sano for his role in a scrap with Detroit last month. MLB announced Sano must sit out Tuesday in Chicago with the Twins playing the White Sox. The punishment was levied two weeks ago but tabled pending Sano’s appeal. He was also fined. MLB criticized Sano for “aggressive actions” that caused the benches to clear during the April 22 game against the Tigers. After Detroit’s JaCoby Jones was hit in the face by a pitch from Twins reliever Justin Haley, Tigers starter Matt Boyd threw behind Sano. Sano pointed his bat and yelled at Boyd. After Tigers catcher James McCann intervened by putting his mitt in Sano’s face, Sano punched McCann in the mask. Boyd was fined.

A court has ordered Michigan State defensive end Demetrius Cooper to undergo daily alcohol testing after he consumed alcohol last month in violation of his bond. Cooper in November accepted a plea deal on misdemeanor assault charges for spitting in the face of an East Lansing parking officer. The deal was for the assault charge to be dismissed in favor of a littering fine if Cooper complied with conditions including no alcohol. ccording to District Court documents, 22-year-old Cooper of Chicago consumed alcohol around April 21. On Tuesday, he was ordered to undergo daily alcohol testing between 5 and 9 a.m. and provide a weekly log to his probation officer. The 6-foot-5, 253-pound Cooper started at defensive end last season. The fifth-year senior was projected as a starter this fall.

Olympics – LA Olympic organizers putting their plans on display
Los Angeles Olympic organizers are putting their plans on display at a time of uncertainty in the race for the 2024 Games. Members of the International Olympic Committee are in Southern California this week to inspect stadiums and arenas that could become future Olympic Games venues.  But as meetings begin Wednesday, there’s a big unknown.  Los Angeles and Paris are the only two bidders left for the 2024 Games.  The IOC is considering a proposal to award the next two Olympics _ 2024 and 2028 _ one to each city. That decision will be made at a meeting in September.    Like Paris, L.A. says it’s only interested in 2024.

NFL – Prosecutors to appeal ruling tossing Hernandez conviction
Prosecutors plan to appeal a ruling that erases former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez’s conviction in a 2013 murder because he died before his appeal was heard. Judge Susan Garsh has ruled that the conviction must be dismissed under longstanding case law in Massachusetts that says a conviction is not final until a court has decided the merits of a defendant’s appeal. Prosecutors had argued that Hernandez forfeited his right to appeal when he made a “calculated” decision to take his own life.

NFL – Manning’s number to be retired during fall ceremony in Indy
Peyton Manning will become the first Indianapolis Colts player to have his jersey retired during a two-day celebration of his career this fall. The weekend begins with the unveiling of Manning’s statue outside Lucas Oil Stadium on Oct. 7, and concludes the following day when he is inducted into the team’s Ring of Honor and becomes the seventh player in franchise history with a retired number. Team owner Jim Irsay issued a statement Tuesday saying Manning would always be a Colt. Manning says he is “humbled” and “grateful” for the honors. He spent his first 13 seasons in Indy, where he won four MVP Awards and his first Super Bowl title. Manning retired after winning another championship with the Denver Broncos.

Horse Racing – Derby winner arrives at Pimlico

FIFA – AP sources: FIFA gives North American World Cup rivals 3 months to bid
North America’s request for a fast-track award of the 2026 World Cup hosting rights is on hold, for a few months at least. People with knowledge of the situation say FIFA’s ruling council has allowed three more months for rival proposals to be presented.  United States, Canada and Mexico had wanted FIFA to confirm they would have a clear run to the hosting rights during meetings of world soccer’s ruling body in Bahrain. Meanwhile, FIFA has dismissed its judge and prosecutor in a move the disgruntled pair said jeopardizes the governing body’s integrity and the future of soccer. The two failed in a bid to be nominated by the council headed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino for re-election. German judge Hans-Joachim Eckert and Swiss prosecutor Cornel Borbely have multiple ongoing cases against soccer officials implicated in a widespread U.S. federal investigation of bribery and corruption.

MHSAA – Girls Basketball, Wrestling, 8-Player football finals changing locations
The Michigan High School Athletic Association has announced some changes in the location of some of their championship events next season.  The girls basketball semifinals and final which has been held at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center will be moving to Van Noord Arena at Calvin College in Grand Rapids.  The move was made because of possible conflicts with the first two rounds of the NCAA Division 1 Women’s Basketball Tournament.   The Breslin Center has been the home of the MHSAA girls semifinals and finals from 2004-06 and again from 2010-17.     Wrestling will see the individual finals move from McGuirk Arena at Central Michigan University to Kalamazoo’s Wings Events Center for the next four years.  With the closing of the Palace of Auburn Hills, the team wrestling finals will be held at Ford Field in Detroit.    The MHSAA also announced that the championship games for 8-player football will return to the Superior Dome on the campus for Northern Michigan University in Marquette.   The 8-player playoffs will also be split into two divisions with each championship game held in Marquette.
