Twins 11, Tigers 5 – Twins avoid sweep with 11-5 rout of Tigers
Max Kepler, Miguel Sano and Robbie Grossman all homered for Minnesota, and the Twins took advantage of an uncharacteristically wild outing by Jordan Zimmermann in an 11-5 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Thursday. Zimmermann (1-1) allowed five runs and four hits in 4 2/3 innings, walking a career-high five. Anibal Sanchez was even worse for the Tigers in relief, allowing six runs in 1 1/3 innings and letting two of Zimmermann’s runners score on Kepler’s three-run homer in the fifth. Grossman hit a two-run shot in the third, and Sano connected for a three-run homer in the sixth. Phil Hughes (2-0) allowed four runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings.  The Twins avoided a three-game sweep at Detroit and pulled even with the Tigers atop the AL Central. Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton each hit their first home run of the season for the Tigers.

White Sox 10, Indians 4 – White Sox score 5 in first, roll past Indians 10-4
Tim Anderson homered on the game’s first pitch, Matt Davidson added a three-run shot in a five-run first inning and the Chicago White Sox beat the slumping Cleveland Indians 10-4 Thursday night.  The defending AL champions have lost five of six after sweeping Texas to begin the season and dropped to 4-5. Anderson hit Josh Tomlin’s first pitch onto the porch in left field while Davidson lined a two-out homer to right-center. Cleveland used five pitchers in the first eight innings, forcing infielder Michael Martinez to work the ninth. Making his first career appearance on the mound, Martinez gave up a single but retired the other three hitters on grounders. Avisail Garcia was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Anthony Swarzak (1-0) relieved starter Miguel Gonzalez in the fifth and allowed one hit in 1 2/3 innings. Tomlin (0-2) gave up seven runs in 1 2/3 innings, matching the shortest outing of his career.

Cubs 4, Dodgers 0 – Anderson’s arm, Almora’s glove lead Cubs over Dodgers 4-0
Brett Anderson beat his former team with five solid innings, center fielder Albert Almora Junior made two outstanding catches against the ivy and the Chicago Cubs blanked the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 Thursday. Anderson (2-0) won in his Wrigley Field debut for the Cubs. The lefty lowered his ERA to 0.84 through two starts with his new club. Anderson, the only member of the Cubs without a World Series ring after Wednesday’s celebration, allowed three hits but walked four. He stranded seven runners, helped by Almora’s defense. Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell hit long solo home runs, their first of the season. Both came off Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-2).

NCAAMBB – Michigan State’s Miles Bridges chooses to stay in school
Miles Bridges has decided to stay at Michigan State for his sophomore season, putting his NBA dreams on hold. Bridges got a roar from a huge crowd gathered at the school’s Sparty statue on Thursday night. The 6-foot-7 forward from Flint led the Spartans with 16.7 points per game, the highest average for a freshman at the school since Magic Johnson scored 17 per game during the 1977-78 season. Bridges also averaged 8.3 rebounds, the most by a Michigan State freshman since Greg Kelser in 1975-76. Bridges says he’s coming back to chase a national championship.

Predators 1, Blackhawks 0 – Pekka Rinne, Predators beat Blackhawks 1-0 in Game 1
Pekka Rinne made 29 saves, Viktor Arvidsson scored in the first period and the Nashville Predators beat the Chicago Blackhawks 1-0 on Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Rinne’s second career postseason shutout sent Nashville to just its second playoff win in Chicago in seven tries. The Predators did not have a 1-0 victory during the regular season.  Game 2 is Saturday night at the United Center. Corey Crawford had 19 saves for Chicago, which got center Artem Anisimov back from a leg injury that sidelined him for the last part of the season, but struggled to find many good looks against a sound defensive performance by Nashville. The Blackhawks, who won the Central Division this year with the most points in the Western Conference, are going for their fourth Stanley Cup championship in the last eight seasons. They eliminated Nashville during two of those title-winning runs, including in 2015 when the Predators blew leads of 3-0 in Game 1 and 3-1 in Game 6 of their first-round series.

NFL – Detroit Lions unveil new-look uniforms
The Detroit Lions will have a new look next season.  They unveiled new, Nike Vapor Untouchable uniforms Thursday night for season-ticket holders at Ford Field.  Detroit will have home , away , “color rush ,” and throwback uniforms. The Lions’ main color will still be Honolulu Blue, as it has been since 1934, on their home uniforms that will have dark, steel grey numbers instead of white numerals. They will wear “color rush,” uniforms for the first time, sporting grey jerseys and pants, and throwbacks for the first time since 2010. The uniforms weigh just 20.4 ounces and repel water and have improved ventilation. Lions President Rod Wood says the team has modernized its appearance and is giving players the latest and best uniform technology.

NCAAFB – 4th Michigan State player investigated for sexual misconduct
Authorities say a fourth Michigan State football player is being investigated in connection with criminal sexual misconduct. Ingham County prosecutors said Thursday the investigation is separate from the one stemming from a January incident involving three players, whose suspensions were announced Feb. 9. The names of all players have not been released, and no charges have been announced. Prosecutors say they don’t know the date of the incident connected to the latest player, but it was reported to have happened in Meridian Township, near the East Lansing school.  Coach Mark Dantonio says the player was suspended on Sunday from all team activities “as soon as we were notified of the situation.” “We will continue to educate and enforce high standards for the program. I expect all of our players to conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and principles of Michigan State University,” he said. “This investigation is an ongoing process. It is not appropriate at this time for me to comment further on this matter.” School and coaching officials haven’t discussed specifics about the allegations or the investigations.
