MLB – Major League Baseball
Yesterday
Detroit Tigers 2, Minnesota Twins 1
Cleveland Indians 2, Chicago White Sox 1 – 10 Innings

Tigers 2, Twins 1 – Boyd allows 1 hit in 6 innings, Tigers beat Twins 2-1
Matthew Boyd allowed one hit in six outstanding innings, and James McCann homered in the fifth to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday. Boyd (1-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth before Robbie Grossman broke it up by lining a clean single to left field with two out. The Detroit left-hander struck out six and walked two before turning the game over to the bullpen. Tigers relievers have struggled so far this season, but they were able to close this game out. Francisco Rodriguez allowed a run in the ninth but recovered for his third save in four chances. Pinch-hitter Max Kepler hit a popup with two on to end it. Hector Santiago (1-1) allowed only three hits in 6 1/3 innings, but one of them was a two-run shot by McCann.

Indians 2, White Sox 1 – 10 Inn. – Brantley lifts Indians to 2-1 win in opener over White Sox
Michael Brantley doubled home Francisco Lindor with two outs in the 10th inning as the Cleveland Indians celebrated their 2016 AL championship and then beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Tuesday in their home opener. Brantley could only watch and cheer for his teammates last October during their postseason run after undergoing two surgeries on his right shoulder. But he’s healthy now, and after playing in just 11 games last season, Brantley made the most of his first home game since May 10 with his game-winning hit. Lindor walked with two outs off Tommy Kahnle (0-1) before Brantley sliced a 3-2 pitch down the left-field line. Lindor was running on the pitch and scored easily while Brantley danced around second base before being mobbed by his teammates. It was the dramatic ending the Indians didn’t get in their last home game, a 10-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series.

MLB – Forbes: Yankees worth big league-high $3.7 billion
Forbes ranks the New York Yankees as baseball’s most valuable team for the 20th straight year and lists the Tampa Bay Rays with the lowest valuation.  Forbes said Tuesday it estimates the Yankees are worth $3.7 billion, up 9 percent from last year. The Dodgers are next at $2.75 billion, a 10 percent increase. Boston was third at $2.7 billion, followed by the Chicago Cubs ($2.675 billion), San Francisco ($2.65 billion) and New York Mets ($2 billion). At the bottom were the Rays ($825 million), Oakland ($880 million), Cincinnati ($915 million) and Cleveland ($920 million). Major League Baseball’s average team value rose 19 percent to $1.54 billion. Forbes says values increased because of new local television deals, as well as a “surge in profitability.”  The Detroit Tigers were 18th on the list at $1.2 billion, the Chicago White Sox are 15th at $1.35 billion.

NHL – Blackhawks’ Rozsival has surgery for facial fractures
Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Michal Rozsival has undergone surgery to repair facial fractures.  The team says Rozsival is expected to make a full recovery from Tuesday’s operation. The Blackhawks did not say how long he will be out. Rozsival was injured when Anaheim’s Nick Ritchie punched him during a game last week. Ritchie was suspended for two games without pay by the NHL. Rozsival played in 22 games during the regular season. Chicago, the top seed in the Western Conference, opens the playoffs against Nashville at home on Thursday.

NHL – Ashes of late NHL enforcer Bob Probert spread in penalty box
Late Red Wings enforcer Bob Probert has been given a little more time in the penalty box at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena.  Probert’s widow, Dani, sprinkled some of the forward’s ashes in the box on Sunday, when the Red Wings played their final game in the stadium. Probert’s daughter, Brogan, tweeted Sunday that she “can’t think of a better place” for her father’s ashes.  Probert logged hours in the box as one of the NHL’s most penalized players. During the 1987-88 season, he led the league with 398 minutes in penalties. He is fifth all time with 3,300 total penalty minutes in his 16-season career. Nine of those seasons were spent in Detroit. Probert retired in 2002 and died of a heart attack in 2010 at the age of 45.

NCAA Hockey – Michigan State hires Danton Cole as new hockey coach
Michigan State has hired Danton Cole as its new hockey coach. The Spartans announced the move Tuesday. The 50-year-old Cole worked previously with USA Hockey’s national team development program. He played at Michigan State when the Spartans won the national title in 1986 and made additional Frozen Four appearances in 1987 and 1989. Cole guided Team USA to the gold medal in 2012 and 2014 at the IIHF Under-18 world championship. He takes over the Spartans after coach Tom Anastos stepped down last month. Michigan State went 7-24-4 this past season. Cole played 318 games in the NHL over six seasons with Winnipeg, Tampa Bay, New Jersey, the New York Islanders and Chicago.

NCAAMBB – Aztecs coach officially steps down
Longtime college basketball coach Steve Fisher has officially announced his retirement.  The 72-year-old Fisher spent the last 18 seasons at San Diego State, where he quickly resuscitated the program after taking over a 4-22 team. He also was head coach during the Fab Five era at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to the 1989 national championship and a berth in the 1992 title game. Brian Dutcher is taking over for Fisher with the Aztecs.

IIHF – Wings coach to run U.S. team at world championships
Detroit Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill will serve in the same capacity for the U.S. men’s hockey team in the world championships next month. Blashill became available when Detroit missed the playoffs for the first time since 1990. The Red Wings are in two seasons since he took over behind the bench. The tournament runs May 5-21 in Germany and France.

FIFA – US, Canada, Mexico ask FIFA for faster World Cup bid process
The North American bid to host the 2026 World Cup has asked FIFA for a quicker decision in June 2018, two years ahead of schedule.  In a letter seen by The Associated Press, the United States, Canada and Mexico soccer federations ask FIFA to consider their request next month at its congress in Bahrain. The bid was launched on Monday, and is likely the only realistic option for FIFA’s 211 member federations who are scheduled to decide in May 2020. The extra agenda item in Bahrain asks FIFA members to make a “principle decision” for the 2026 tournament to be “jointly and cooperatively organized” in North America. FIFA could then ask the bid to meet all technical demands by March, and confirm the hosts at the 2018 congress in Moscow..
