President Donald Trump’s plans for a wall along the U.S. border with Mexico may run into some trouble with Congress. St. Joseph Republican Fred Upton tells WSJM News Trump’s request for $999 million to cover about 50 miles of wall doesn’t exactly sound entirely cost effective, considering the border is more than 1,000 miles long.

“That’s a lot of money,” Upton said. “If you’re going to put up a billion bucks for 40 miles, that doesn’t come out very well.”

To Upton, the priority is border security, in general.

“Are there some areas where a wall might work?” Upton asked us. “Probably so, but I think that we’ve got to go through the normal process to see precisely where it’s going to be, what the cost is going to be, particularly in relation to other priorities within that particular budget.”

Upton tells us the budget process is a long way from getting done. How things pan out for the wall will depend on lawmakers.
