The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety hopes to work more closely with local seniors. Acting Director Dan McGinnis tells WSJM News  he’s planning to create a senior advocate position who can help the department organize the effort.

“What we’re looking for is a volunteer,” McGinnis said. “We’d like to have that person, or those people, maybe come to the department once or twice a week, make phone calls, touch base with some of our seniors, set up visits for our officers.”

McGinnis says there are many senior citizens in town who live alone, and he wants public safety to stop by their homes from time to time to check on them and chat. He plans to find his senior advocate in the very near future and also connect seniors with other services than can help them.
