Islanders 3, Red Wings 1 – Islanders open 9-game road swing with 3-1 win over Red Wings
Calvin de Haan was credited with a go-ahead goal that caromed off an opponent late in the second period and the New York Islanders went on to beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 Tuesday night. De Haan’s shot from above the left circle was stopped by Petr Mrazek, but the rebound went off Detroit defenseman Xavier Ouellet and the back of the goaltender’s left leg and into the net. John Tavares scored early in the third period to give the Islanders a two-goal lead and they coasted to the victory. Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, and Thomas Greiss stopped 26 shots for New York. Henrik Zetterberg scored for Detroit and Mrazek finished with 19 saves. The Islanders, in contention for a wild-card spot, began a stretch of nine straight road games by winning for the third time in four games and improved to 8-13-4 away from home.

Blackhawks 5, Wild 3 – Toews gets hat trick for Hawks in 5-3 win over Wild
Jonathan Toews had three goals and two assists and the Chicago Blackhawks beat rival Minnesota 5-3 on Tuesday night for their second win over the Western Conference-leading Wild in less than two weeks. Toews notched his fourth career hat trick on an empty-netter with 1:02 left to stave off a spirited rally by the Wild, who began a franchise-record eight-game homestand on Feb. 8 with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Blackhawks. Toews had a goal and two assists in that one and has 37 points in 35 career games against Minnesota. Chicago’s captain has been chewing up almost everyone else, too, with 20 points in his last 12 games. Toews’ wing men Nick Schmaltz and Richard Panik had the other goals, giving the Blackhawks 34 goals in their last eight games. Their first line totaled nine points. Mikael Granlund’s second power-play goal for the Wild brought them within 4-3, before Ryan Suter hit the crossbar with a shot that nearly tied it.

WMU 61, Toledo 56 – OT – Moore hits winning 3 to cap W. Michigan’s comeback in OT
Bryce Moore scored his only points of the game on a 3-pointer from the wing with 29 seconds left in overtime and Tucker Haymond added two free throws as Western Michigan rallied to defeat Toledo 61-56 last night. Thomas Wilder led the Broncos with 30 points on 11-for-19 shooting, and Drake LaMont added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

NIU 89, CMU 66 – Northern Illinois keeps Marcus Keene in check, beats CMU
Northern Illinois snapped a four-game losing streak with an 89-66 victory over Central Michigan on Tuesday. Levi Bradley scored 18 points sand Marin Maric added 16 for Northern Illinois, which led throughout the game. Marcus Keene finished with 18 points to lead Central Michigan.

Ball St.  79, EMU 72 – House, Ball St rally from 19-point deficit, beat E Michigan
Franko House had 16 points, six rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots, Ryan Weber scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Ball State rallied from a 19-point deficit to beat Eastern Michigan 79-72 last night. Tayler Persons scored 16 as well and Sean Sellers had nine of his 11
points after halftime for Ball State.

MLB – Lincoln museum to showcase Cub-Cardinals rivalry
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum plans to unveil an exhibit chronicling the history of the rivalry between the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals. Museum officials say “Cubs vs. Cardinals: The Rivalry” was developed with the help of both teams and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. The exhibit is to open March 24. Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson said in a statement the intent of the exhibit is to “animate the stories associated with one of baseball’s most celebrated rivalries.” Items planned for the exhibit includes the second-base bag stolen by the Cardinals’ Lou Brock to break the modern record for steals in a season, and the cap worn by Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood when he struck out 20 batters.

MLB – MLB eyes rules changes without union approval
Major League Baseball has served notice is may circumvent the players union in order to make some rules changes. Commissioner Rob Manfred says steps are being taken to clear the way to unilaterally change the strike zone, install pitch clocks and limit trips to the pitcher’s mound starting in 2018. The collective bargaining agreement requires baseball to get union approval before making rule changes, unless it gives the union a one-year notice.  Manfred has served notice the league intends to do that. Union head Tony Clark recently indicated opposition to the proposed changes for this season.

MLB – 4 new umps replacing retiring vets
Jim Joyce has joined John Hirschbeck, Tim Welke and Bob Davidson in retiring from Major League Baseball’s umpire staff. The commissioner’s office said Adam Hamari, Pat Hoberg, Gabe Morales and Carlos Torres have been promoted to the full-time staff. Hirschbeck, the crew chief in last year’s World Series and a big league umpire since 1984, had announced his planned retirement last year. So did Welke and Davidson. Hirschbeck and Welke _ who was sidelined by knee injuries _ were 33-year veterans. Davidson worked his first big league game in 1982.

NBA – Regime shakeup in LA
Magic Johnson is now running the basketball side of things for the Los Angeles Lakers. Owner Jeanie Buss has named the former Laker great as the new president of basketball operations after firing general manager Mitch Kupchak and her brother Jim, who had been the Lakers’ executive vice president of basketball operations. The moves come two days before the NBA’s trade deadline. The Lakers are in the midst of the worst four-year stretch in the team’s history, including a 19-39 record this season. Kupchak was the Lakers general manager since 2000.  The team has started the search for a new GM. First year coach Luke Walton got a vote of confidence from Buss.

NFL – High value placed on Brady Super Bowl jersey
The value of Tom Brady’s missing Super Bowl jersey is listed as $500,000 on a Houston Police Department report. The New England Patriots quarterback is listed as the complainant in the report dated Feb. 6, that was released on Tuesday. That was the day after the Patriots came back from a 25-point deficit to defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime. Investigators have been working to identify who was in the locker room at the time the jersey was taken. A Houston police officer was stationed outside the locker room on the day of the game, but access to the location was controlled by Patriots team security.

  • Ryan Haynes buzzer beating shot at the end of regulation forced the game to overtime, but in the extra session Mattawan pulled out a 45-43 win over St. Joe.   Michael Hunn led all scorers with 14 points for the Bears, who fall to 9-8 on the season.  St. Joe also got 13 points from Cade Shimulunas.  The Bears are at Portage Central on Friday.

Kalamazoo Central 55, Lakeshore 39

  • Kalamazoo Central broke open a 3 point halftime margin and outscored Lakeshore 20-8 in the third quarter in a 55-39 win over the Lancers.   Max Gaishin had 12 points to lead the Lancers in defeat while Colin Brushwyler had 10.    Jeremiah Vincent led the Maroon Giants with a game high 16 points.

  • South Haven nearly pulled off an upset against a potent Benton Harbor offense in the Tigers’ gym.  Trailing the entire game, the Rams took the lead with 1:17 left in the game, but Benton Harbor’s freshman center Carlos Johnson hit a three-pointer to regain the lead and finally win it, 56-53.  South Haven’s DaShawn Palmer led all scorers with 19 points, while Benton Harbor’s Roy Anderson led the Tigers with 16.

Marcellus 63, Michigan Lutheran 48

  • Brandon Clark had 31 points including 6 three pointers, while Jack Summers had 15 as Marcellus beat Michigan Lutheran 63-48.   Jeremy Tolsma and Zeb Pappenfuss each had 16 for Lutheran.

Decatur 46, White Pigeon 39

  • Erik Mroczek scored 23 points, leading Decatur to a 46-30 win over White Pigeon.

Eau Claire 66, River Valley 56

  • Eau Claire got off to a fast start, taking a 10 point lead after the first quarter and went on to defeat River Valley 66-56,  Three Beavers scored in double figures as Dorrian Thomas had 15, Austin Dohn had 14 and Jomel Armstead had 13.  River Valley was led by Will Korbel who had a game best 16 points, Matthew Schmide at 14 points for the Mustangs.

  • St. Joe improved to 15-4 on the season after a 53-22 win over Mattawan.   Katie Algyre scored 14 of her game high 16 points in the first half in the win.   Shelby Madison added 11 points for St. Joe.   Mattawan was led in scoring by freshman Natalie Foster with 10 points.

  • Bridgman got 10 points from Brooke Janes in a 37-33 win over New Buffalo.  The Bees conclude the regular season with a record of 4-16.  Lauren Keller added 9 points for Bridgman.    Bridgman won’t play until next Wednesday in the Class C District semifinals at Watervliet against the winner of Brandywine and Watervliet.
