Devils 4, Red Wings 3 – Devils start fast and hold on to beat Red Wings 4-3
Kyle Palmieri scored twice and Cory Schneider made 27 saves, helping the New Jersey Devils hold on for a 4-3 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. Stefan Noesen gave the Devils the lead on their first shot 1:28 into the game. Palmieri put New Jersey ahead 2-0 lead less than five minutes later and restored its two-goal advantage with 34 seconds left in the second period with the first of his team’s two short-handed goals. Detroit’s Henrik Zetterberg scored with 1:47 remaining in the second, but the struggling team he leads stayed within a goal for less than 1 1/2 minutes. The Devils went up 3-1 midway through on Adam Henrique’s short-handed goal. Detroit pulled within a score on goals from Tomas Tatar and Nick Jensen. Detroit had an extra skater when Palmieri was called for interference with 2:16 left and pulled Jared Coreau about a minute later, but it couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity to extend the game to overtime.

Sharks 3, Blackhawks 1 – Hertl gets game-winner in Sharks’ 3-1 win over Blackhawks
Tomas Hertl scored the game-winner with 2:03 remaining in regulation after Patrick Marleau scored his 499th career goal, helping the San Jose Sharks win for the seventh time in eight games, 3-1 over the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night.  Hertl, who missed 32 games with a knee injury, got his first goal since Oct. 27 when he knocked in the rebound of Brent Burns’ shot to help the Sharks match last year’s home win total of 18 in the first game back from the All-Star break. Joe Pavelski added an empty-netter to cap a night that nearly included a milestone for Marleau. He had an apparent goal wiped off by an offside call on replay before scoring No. 499 in the second period.     Martin Jones made 24 saves.  Dennis Rasmussen scored for the Blackhawks, who have lost three straight games. Corey Crawford made 26 saves.

Super Bowl 51 – Houston police chief: Protests part of Super Bowl security
Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo says authorities are ready to handle any protests that might occur during Super Bowl week in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order on refugees and immigration.  Acevedo said Tuesday that officials have not been taken by surprise because dealing with the potential for demonstrations has always been part of security planning efforts.   Officials are monitoring the possibility of additional protests after demonstrations against the order took place nationwide last weekend.  The police chief said with high profile events like the Super Bowl, “you have to prepare and expect some type of protest.”  Acevedo said the biggest security problem authorities have dealt with so far is personal items left unsecured in vehicles, making them easy targets for thieves.

Super Bowl 51– NFL nixes GNC Super Bowl ad
Nutritional supplement seller GNC intended to use a 30-second Super Bowl ad to revamp its image. But the NFL had other ideas. GNC says it was notified that it will not be allowed to air the ad it created _ or any ad _ during the game Sunday because it violates an NFL policy against having supplements advertised during its games. It’s the first time in recent memory that an advertiser has been banned completely.

Gordie Howe jersey stolen, jeopardizing youth hockey season
A jersey autographed by Gordie Howe has been stolen from the ice rink it was supposed to raise money for. The jersey was taken from an arena in Asquith, about 25 miles west of Saskatoon, during a break-in over weekend. It was supposed to be raffled off during an annual fundraiser to support the rink. Jody Nehring with the Asquith community sports center said Tuesday that the theft has been particularly hard on kids who use the rink.  Nehring told 650 CKOM “there were a lot of tears shed” and said the children are “devastated.” Without the funds from raffling the Howe jersey, they may not get to play hockey next year, she said.  Nehring believes the jersey was specifically targeted in the theft. The uniform was on display while tickets were sold and then locked in a back room.  The jersey had been donated by one of Howe’s relatives. Howe died June 10, 2016, at the age of 88.

MLS – Chicago’s Soldier Field will host MLS All-Star Game
Chicago’s Soldier Field will host this year’s Major League Soccer All-Star game, the league announced Tuesday. The match on Aug. 2 will feature the MLS All-Stars against an international team that has not been named yet. The Chicago Fire, who play at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois, will host the event.  It is the first time in six years that the game will not be played at an MLS home venue. The 2010 All-Star game was played at Houston’s Reliant Stadium.  MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Fire owner Andrew Hauptman and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel attended a press conference Tuesday announcing the game.  The Fire, embarking on its 20th year, previously hosted the All-Star game at Toyota Park against Chelsea in 2006. Fire Coach Veljko Paunovic will manage the MLS All-Stars.
