Detroit Red Wings 1, Montreal Canadiens 0

Red Wings 1, Canadiens 0 – Red Wings’ Vanek scores, Coreau blanks Canadiens in 1-0 win
Thomas Vanek scored late in the second period and Jared Coreau earned his second shutout, leading the Detroit Red Wings to a 1-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens on Monday.  Detroit won consecutive games at home for the first time since starting the season 4-0 at Joe Louis Arena as part of its 6-2 start. The Red Wings began the day in last place in the Atlantic Division.  The Atlantic Division-leading Canadiens had won five of their last seven games. The 6-foot-6 Coreau, the tallest goaltender to play for the Red Wings, stopped 18 shots to improve to 5-1-1 in his first season with Detroit.

Indiana Pacers 98, New Orleans Pelicans 95

Pacers 98, Pelicans 95 – Teague, George help Pacers hold off Pelicans 98-95
Jeff Teague fell just short of the first triple double of his career Monday, and Paul George scored 20 points to help the Indiana Pacers hold off the New Orleans Pelicans 98-95.  Teague finished with 16 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds as Indiana won for the fifth time in six games.  All-Star center Anthony Davis led the Pelicans with 16 points despite missing the final 19 minutes after hurting his right hip and left thumb. Team officials said X-rays were negative.  Without Davis, the Pelicans’ came up just short. After playing catch-up most of the game, they finally tied the score at 91 with 4:10 to go. But Teague broke the tie with a 3-pointer on Indiana’s next possession. New Orleans had three chances to tie it again in the final 20 seconds but Jrue Holiday missed a 22-footer with 19.9 seconds to go, E’Twaun Moore missed a layup with 4.8 seconds left and Tyreke Evans’ 3-pointer from the right corner hit nothing but air as the buzzer sounded.

NCAAMBB – AP Top 25 – Villanova is back on top
There’s a not-so-new No. 1 team in The Associated Press men’s basketball poll. Defending national champion Villanova, which held the top spot earlier in the season, is back on top after last week’s top team, Baylor, lost for the first time last week. The Wildcats received 28 first place votes with second-ranked Kansas getting 32 while third-ranked UCLA was given three and fourth-ranked Gonzaga two. Completing the top-five this week is Kentucky. The second five features Baylor, West Virginia, Creighton, North Carolina and Florida State.

NCAAFB – Michigan RB coach Wheatly heads to the NFL
The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired former Michigan standout Tyrone Wheatley as running backs coach. Wheatley spent the past two years coaching running backs at his alma mater. Before that, he spent five years working for new Jaguars coach Doug Marrone. Wheatley coached running backs with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills (2013-14) and on the collegiate level at Syracuse (2010-12). Marrone was the head coach at both stops. The 44-year-old Wheatley rejoins Marrone, who is working with executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin to build his staff. They previously hired Todd Wash as defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell as secondary coach, Pat Flaherty as offensive line coach and Joe DeCamillis as special teams coordinator. Wheatley inherits a running backs group that features Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon.

Tennessee 71, (6) Notre Dame 69

Tennessee 71, #6 Notre Dame 69 – Nunn’s big shot helps Lady Vols upset Notre Dame
Jaime Nared hit a tiebreaking jumper with 10.3 seconds left as Tennessee erased a 15-point, second-half deficit to beat No. 6 Notre Dame 71-69 on Monday night. The victory enabled Tennessee (11-6) to avoid its first three-game losing streak since February 1986. Notre Dame’s Lindsay Allen tied it at 69-all with 1:03 remaining. Notre Dame’s final hope vanished when Allen’s 3-point attempt fell short of the front rim at the buzzer.

Tonight
Michigan State at Northwestern, 9:00 p.m.

NCAAWBB – AP Top 25 – UConn still tops in AP women’s poll
Fresh off its record-breaking 91st consecutive victory, UConn remains the No. 1 team in The Associated Press women’s basketball poll. The Huskies (16-0) routed SMU on Saturday to best their own NCAA mark and stay as the unanimous choice atop the poll. They garnered all 33 votes from the national media panel Monday. Baylor, Maryland, Mississippi State and South Carolina follow the Huskies as the first five teams were unchanged. Notre Dame, Florida State, Washington, Louisville and Stanford round out the top 10 teams.

NFL – Falcons: Julio Jones will be ready to go in NFC championship
Atlanta coach Dan Quinn says All-Pro receiver Julio Jones will play in the NFC championship game despite a lingering foot injury. That injury limited Jones during the divisional-round victory over Seattle Saturday. Quinn insists there’s no chance of the Falcons being without one of their offensive leaders when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers for a trip to the Super Bowl. Jones had 83 receptions for 1,409 yards and six touchdowns this season.

NFL – Packers, Cowboys make TV history
The Packers thrilling last second win over Dallas yesterday was a record breaker. The playoff game was seen by 48.5 million views on Fox, making it the most viewed NFL divisional playoff game in history. Pittsburgh’s two-point win over Kansas City Sunday night was seen by 37.4 million people on NBC and its digital platform, including 37.1 million on the network.

MLB – Obama celebrates World Series champion Chicago Cubs
President Barack Obama is celebrating the World Series champion Chicago Cubs before he leaves office. On what usually is a sleepy federal holiday at the White House, Cubs players filed into the White House East Room on Martin Luther King Day for Obama’s final ceremony for a championship sports team. Even sweeter for Obama is that the Cubs hail from his hometown. The president has a home in Chicago and is a White Sox fan. He rooted for the Cubs after the Sox failed to reach the playoffs. Obama invited the Cubs hours after they won the series in November, asking on Twitter if the team wanted to visit before his term ends on Friday. The Cubs won their first World Series title since 1908 by defeating the Cleveland Indians.

Olympics – New NFL stadium would play key role in 2024 LA Olympics
Organizers trying to land the 2024 Summer Olympics for Los Angeles would include a new football stadium in the games’ ceremonies.  The NFL stadium being built in Inglewood near Los Angeles International Airport would be used for ceremonies along with Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum as part of the committee’s concept to create a “new games for a new era,” LA2024 announced Monday. The opening ceremony would be held July 20, 2024, and begin with a torch relay down the row of columns of the Coliseum, which hosted the 1932 and 1984 Olympics.  The stadium is expected to seat 70,000 spectators for a Hollywood-produced spectacle of musical performances and a live viewing and virtual reality experience of all ceremonies at the NFL stadium.
