NFL – Emergency eye surgery makes Zimmer uncertain for Thursday
Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is having emergency eye surgery, about a month after he had an initial procedure to repair a torn retina. Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Wednesday night that Zimmer was having the operation and uncertain to recover in time for the team’s game against Dallas on Thursday night. Spielman said he has met with coaches and players to put a contingency plan in place in case Zimmer is unable to coach against the Cowboys. Zimmer first experienced trouble with his vision a couple of days before the Oct. 31 game at Chicago and scratched the eye inadvertently during the game. The Vikings said Spielman wouldn’t be available for further comment until Thursday morning.

NFL – 49ers’ Kelly and Florida’s McElwain deny Oregon interest
San Francisco 49ers coach Chip Kelly says he has no interest in going back to Oregon after his successor Mark Helfrich was fired Tuesday night.  And Florida coach Jim McIlwain, whose team is getting ready to play top-ranked Alabama in Saturday’s SEC championship, says he’s not interested in Oregon either.

NCAAFB – QB Zaire leaving Notre Dame, eligible to play immediately
Malik Zaire, the quarterback who won the starting job at Notre Dame last year before a broken ankle ended his season, plans to graduate in December and use his final year of eligibility elsewhere next season. University spokesman Michael Bertsch said Wednesday that Zaire has been given his release. Zaire told the South Bend Tribune among the schools he is considering are Florida, Wisconsin, Pittsburgh and Michigan State, an Irish opponent next season. Notre Dame won all three games Zaire started but was beaten out for the starter’s job this season by DeShone Kizer. Zaire completed 58 of 98 passes for 816 yards and six touchdowns with no interceptions in three seasons with the Irish. Kizer has said he hasn’t decided whether he will return next season. He has requested feedback from the NFL Draft Advisory Board.  Reports said that Zaire wanted a transfer to Michigan State, but Notre Dame blocked that request as well and transfer requests to any other school on the Irish 2017 schedule

MLB – MLB players, owners have tentative labor deal
Baseball players and owners reached a tentative agreement on a five-year labor contract Wednesday night, a deal that extends the sport’s industrial peace to 26 years since the ruinous fights in the first two decades of free agency. After days of near round-the-clock talks, negotiators reached a verbal agreement about 3 1/2 hours before the expiration of the current pact. Then they worked to draft a memorandum of understanding, which must be ratified by both sides. As part of the deal, the luxury tax threshold rises from $189 million to $195 million next year, $197 million in 2018, $206 million in 2019, $209 million in 2020 and $210 million in 2021, a person familiar with the agreement told The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been signed.

MLB – CBA ending All-Star link to World Series’ home-field advantage
The league that wins baseball’s All-Star Game no longer will get home-field advantage in the World Series, which instead will go to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record.  The change was included in Major League Baseball’s tentative new collective bargaining agreement and disclosed early Thursday to The Associated Press by a person familiar with the agreement. The person spoke on condition of anonymity, because details of the deal — reached Wednesday evening in Irving, Texas — had not been announced.  This year’s World Series punctuated the All-Star Game policy’s effect when Game 7 was played in Cleveland instead of at Wrigley Field, after the Cubs finished the regular season with 103 wins, as compared to the Indians’ 94. The Cubs still won, ending their 108-year championship drought.

NFL responds to congresswoman about unaccepted ID
The NFL sent a memo to the 32 teams to clarify what is valid identification after a man with a new District of Columbia driver’s license was initially denied purchasing alcohol at a stadium. A vendor at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, did not recognize the license and turned away Aninda Maitra, thinking the ID was from the country of Colombia. The vendor asked for Maitra’s passport. Maitra eventually got his beer, but Eleanor Holmes Norton, a delegate to the House of Representatives from the District, wrote to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell about the incident.  Last week, the NFL responded to Norton, saying it has sent photos of the old and new DC driver’s licenses to the clubs and directed them to “share this information with their concession management teams.”
