Ish Smith added 13 points whhile Detroit shot 49 percent from the field. Kemba Walker had 23 points for the Hornets, who were playing their fourth game in five nights. The Pistons hadn’t played since Saturday and looked much fresher throughout the game in snapping Charlotte’s two-game winning streak. Detroit took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter after Caldwell-Pope knocked down a pair of 3-pointers late in the third. Things got sloppy from there with the Hornets turning the ball over frequently on bad passes, and the game quickly turning into a blowout.

Dallas, playing the second of back-to-back games on the road, has dropped two straight and won just three of its last nine overall.

Blackhawks 2, Panthers 1 – SO – Panik, Blackhawks beat Panthers 2-1 in shootout
Richard Panik and Artemi Panarin scored in a shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat Florida 2-1 on Tuesday night in the Panthers’ first game since Tom Rowe took over as interim coach. Panik also scored in regulation and Corey Crawford made 38 saves in Chicago’s first home game in 16 days. The Blackhawks went 3-3-1 on their 12-day circus trip. Panarin beat Roberto Luongo with a slick backhand in the second round of the shootout. After Aleksander Barkov was stopped by Crawford at the other end, Panik converted his chance with a well-placed wrist shot past Luongo on the glove side. Florida returned to the ice for the first time since coach Gerard Gallant was fired after a 3-2 loss at Carolina on Sunday night. Jaromir Jagr scored in the third period and Luongo made 32 saves, but the Panthers lost for the third time in four games.

NCAAFB – Playoff Rankings – Ohio State holds firm to 2nd in CFP rankings
Ohio State held firm at second in the College Football Playoff rankings, putting the Buckeyes in position to become the first team to be selected to the final four without winning its conference.  The second-to-last rankings were released Tuesday night and Alabama was No. 1, followed by Ohio State, Clemson and Washington. The Crimson Tide, Tigers and Huskies all play conference championship games this weekend and presumably would be in good shape to make the playoff if they win. The final rankings and playoff pairings will be released Sunday. Michigan dropped to five after losing to Ohio State. Wisconsin was sixth and Penn State was seventh. The Badgers and Nittany Lions will play for the Big Ten title in Indianapolis on Saturday.

NCAAFB – Spartan senior Demetrious Cox cited for misdemeanor assault
Michigan State defensive back Demetrious Cox is facing a misdemeanor assault charge. The Lansing State Journal says Cox was arrested early Thursday. He didn’t play against Penn State last weekend for violating team rules.

NCAAFB – Eastern Michigan caps turnaround season with bowl trip
Eastern Michigan is going bowling for the first time since 1987. Eastern will face Old Dominion in the Popeyes Bahamas Bowl in Nassau on December 23. The Eagles have gone 7-5 this season — their first winning record since 1995. They beat San Jose State in the California Bowl 29 years ago in their last bowl game.

NCAAFB – Ducks sack Helfrich after 4-8 season
Oregon has fired coach Mark Helfrich after a disappointing 4-8 season. Helfrich was head coach of the Ducks for four seasons, leading the team to the first College Football Playoff championship game two years ago. But this season the Ducks faltered with a five-game losing streak and the team finished at the bottom of the Pac-12 North with just two conference wins. Helfrich had a 37-16 record after taking over from Chip Kelly in 2013.

MLB – Jay signs with World Series champs
The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Jon Jay have agreed to an $8 million, one-year contract, likely signaling the end of free agent Dexter Fowler’s time with the World Series champions. Jay batted .291 with two homers and 26 RBIs in 90 games with San Diego last season. The Cubs have an opening in center after Fowler turned down a $17.2 million qualifying offer two weeks ago. Fowler also rejected a qualifying offer from Chicago last November and then returned to the Cubs during spring training. But that same scenario seems even less likely this time around. Jay could platoon in center with righty-hitting Albert Almora Jr. Or Cubs manager Joe Maddon could move Jason Heyward over from right for Chicago’s first title defense since it won it all in 1908.

MLB – Porcello, Rendon get comeback honors
Boston Cy Young Award winner Rick Porcello has won the AL Comeback Player of the Year award, while Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon (rehn-DOHN’) has received the NL honor. Porcello posted a major league best 22 wins this season, after going 9-15 in 2015.  He finished with a 22-4 record and a 3.15 ERA over 33 starts to help the Red Sox capture the American League East title.  Rendon hit .270 with 20 home runs and 85 RBIs in 156 games. He had a .348 on-base percentage and a .450 slugging percentage to help the Nationals win the NL East for the second time in three seasons. Rendon was limited to 80 games in 2015 because of injuries. The awards are voted on by the 30 team beat writers from MLB.com.

Soccer – Colombian team offers title to ill-fated opponents
The Colombian soccer team that was scheduled to play the ill-fated Brazilian club in a South American championship says it’s offering the title to the rivals whose plane has crashed. The Medellin-based team says it’s asked the South American soccer confederation to award the title in honor of the Brazilian team that was aboard a plane that went down with the loss of 71 of the 77 people aboard.  Three team members were among the six that survived.  One of them, goalkeeper Jakson Follmann, had to have his right leg amputated as a result of injuries suffered in the crash.
