The American Heart Association is hoping folks will try to keep their Thanksgiving dinner a bit healthier this year. Michigan Healthy Food Access Campaign Director Ted O’Dell tells WSJM News one tip is to first stack half of your plate with less fatty and salty foods.

“Vegetables, maybe some lean protein, some fruit,” O’Dell said. “That leaves the other half of the plate for all of the tradition food we all love so much.”

While it can be tempting to go overboard with the holiday feast, but O’Dell says just a few steps can help you avoid overloading on fat. As for the kids, he suggests tiding them over with grapes or bananas as they wait for dinner. The heart association recommends adding color to your menu, with lots of fruits and veggie options.
